Alone in the Dark for 360

X05: Bad news for Achluophobes.

Adding to the list of new game announcements coming out of the X05 event, Atari has confirmed that survival-horror franchise Alone in the Dark is heading for the Xbox 360 next year.

Paying no heed to the dodgy Christian Slater film based on the franchise, or previous news that a PS3 version is in development, Atari released a spattering of screens and art, before talking up the "astonishing real-time physics and full environmental interaction."

Lyon-based studio Eden Games is in charge of creating the next-gen nightmare and according to Atari Europe's marketing director, Cyril Voirin, the company is "supremely confident that they will deliver a visceral and gripping experience that will establish the Alone in the Dark franchise as the leader of the next-generation survival genre and once again, remain ahead of the pack."

Apart from the decidedly vague promise of "a unique gameplay structure adapted for a broader audience" (whatever that means), no further details regarding the all-important storyline, characters or actual gameplay have been revealed at this stage. We'd expect long-term darkness fan Edward Carnby to make another appearance, although he must be in his sixties by now, so you'd have to wonder if the old ticker could withstand many more scares at this stage.

Microsoft mouth Peter Moore added his tuppence, promising "an intense and voracious gaming experience" which will "look and play amazing on Xbox 360". In the meantime, keep your friends close and the lights on while you check out these screens.

Do someone want to explain to me when the Alone In the Dark franchise was ever ahead of the pack?

    Other then the original
  • killyourtv #4 6 years ago

the original Alone in the Dark scared the beejaysus out of me when I was a kid
  • Dizzy #6 6 years ago

Strange that this was announced as exclusive for PS3??? Or is this another version?

Yeah true... original was great.. after that... meh.

"look and play amazing on Xbox 360"

If this guy's job is to speak in public, why hasn't he learnt to use proper sentences yet?

Aside from that, hurrah I think. Screens look nice, if a little bit "concept art". I wait for more info before I form an opinion about whether it will be good or not.

p.s. Good to hear the dev team is supremely confident it will be good. Always a good sign that... isn't it? ;)

It appears that Atari announced all their next-gen titles for PS3 only at the TGS and saved the 360 announcements for X05. Which is a bit odd tbh, considering the 360 was at TGS as well.

What the hell happened to Carnaby, anyway? One minute he's a dodgy old English geezer in tweed, the next he's an ass-kicking long-haired youngster.

Sorry slide_away, mae culpa, mae culpa, mae maxi culpa! I should have worded my comment in such away that I didn't (once again) speak for the whole gaming community. Glad you are happy slide_away - it'll be a first!

You say you are happy with what you've seen so far? Is that an official launch line-up then? No, it's what they say will be out this side of xmas - not necessarily on launch day. Whereas my comment is in regard to the LAUNCH lineup. Y'know, the day of release - confirmation of available games......that kind of thing?! So why the hell would we be worried whether you're happy or not? The point of the post is that I'm not!!

Fuck me - sarcasm is wasted on you isn't it?

Thanks to RE, this series is dead. They'll always just be playing catchup now. Such a shame as the first game invented survival horror. Capcom just ripped it off and took credit.
  • Xerx3s #11 6 years ago

AitD?! OMFG! One of the first and best of the genre! This brings back memories! It better be good. I dont care, i want this, RE and Sh and lots more! And they better be scarier than anything before because the scare factor is just waaaaaaaaaay to low.

you munting fuckers can attack me all you like, you provide me with hours of entertainment.

i'd much rather learn the week before release which games will be available on launch day than have them give us a concrete list now and have to rush several titles out that just aren't ready.
  • Teeth #13 6 years ago

If I had a 360 pre-ordered, I would be too excited by the prospect of getting it to be upset about a hazy launch lineup. I'd be getting at least one game from whatever they release at launch.

I also can understand why the launch lineup is hazy in the first place, I mean for crying out loud they've only had devkits a few months! Give 'em a break :)

All that being said, I think it would have been better to get the kits out, get the games in and then launch. But I am not a businessman.

    "how us loyal 360 fans"

You're a loyal fan? Before it's even out? And before you've seen it running?

Seems strange to me that one :-)
  • Yossarian #15 6 years ago

personally if there's even only one good game out on Dec. 2nd (and given that they're throwing 10-15 titles at the wall to see what sticks and quite a few of them aren't made by EA, that seems more than a safe bet) I don't mind waiting a week or two or three for the rest to filter out. I mean, Kameo is meant to have 30 hours of play, not to mention Live co-op, Oblivion is monstrously huge, PDZ has a wealth of content both online and offline, not to mention bots to play with ... if even one of those works out as good you've got weeks of play ahead of you.

I personally am glad that Microsoft have come out and said 'You can expect these, but the rest you'll have to wait until we've certified them'. It's a far better approach than 'All of these will be done', and then either disappointing with delays or rushed products.
  • Fatfish #16 6 years ago

Er, why so strange? Loyal in that I have faith in the machine because of MS standards to date and already own an xbox, and faith in the software having seen the developers on board and the titles in the piepline. Personally I see nothing strange in that at all - but then that's just my opinion........slide_away.

    And besides, it's fecking SARCASM!!!!!

Yossarian - agreed. Kameo will be on my list for sure. As will PDZ if it's released at launch. Possibly Condemned too. And really can't wait for Quake 4 - I know, it's a tried and tested formula (nothing new), but it looks fecking awesome. The only one that's not really getting me excited (apart from all the EA sports updates!) is PGR3. I know it should, but it's just not getting pulse racing.

Ah, a marvellous looking slice of the survival horror pie for the glorious 360, which automatically assures it's place in the halls of awesomeness.

Compare something as visually orgasmic as this to the likes of Resident fucking Evil 4 for the B$2 and Lamecube, and I think it's BEYOND obvious which is the better game for all but the most bullshit blinded of $ony retards to see!

360 is going to come and stomp all over the bullshit currently infesting the survival horror genre on all the inferior consoles, and the pathetic zombie-like B$2 owners will truly be left 'alone in the dark' playing with their pitiful shrivelled winkies as they won't have a good console to enjoy anymore as they will know that the future that IS the 360 is out there, and their lives will be so much emptier for it!

And to all the fagwads taking shots at my Xbox brother slide_away, the only person other than myself that sees through the veil of bullshit through which most people seem to view this webshite, I say fuck off and get a life losers, WE'LL be the ones laughing when the 360 comes out and blesses us with the best games ever created while you all WAIT for the latest Katarugi bullshit fest to posted on here!
  • Yossarian #18 6 years ago

    Xavier. darling.

Alone in the Dark is multiplatform.

now go jerk off to some Allard press photos.
  • Fatfish #19 6 years ago

Xavier - I'd check your facts before you go running off at the mouth boy. Some of us here are very pro-360, we're just not pathetic enough to fall to the level of obnoxious, argumentative and infantile fanboys. So as we were doing quite nicely without the blatant (and unnecessary) insults and shit-hurling, why don't you kindly fuck off and get a life! Talk like a grown up and we'll respond in kind. The issue with your 'brother' is that he is almost as argumentative and infantile as you. His pedantic nature is what get's peoples backs up, but at least he doesn't come storming into a discussion without some kind of thought and blurting out the first thing that comes to mind in attempt to rile people. Grow up.

    Yossarian +1

    hehe.. reel them in.
  • Fubdub #21 6 years ago

Thank you Xavier, your bulletproof argument based on some random concept screenshoots have convinced me that Xbox 360 is indeed superior to PS3 or for that matter any other gameconsole ever, past present or future. I regret only that I have but one life to give for Allard.

If Xavier had his way, it'd be more than just your life you'd be giving Allard........it'd probably be 'head'!! ;)

    From an average survival horror fan;

Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare wasn't bad - mind you, it hasn't aged at all well either. But it felt as though they were trying to copy Resident Evil, you know? The voice acting was wooden, the plot was OK-if-nothing-spectacularly-original, the action was good...

But these days, we have Resident Evil 4, Silent Hill 2 or 3 given your persuasion (We'll pretend SH4 doesn't exist), Project Zero and plenty more - like ObsCure, The Suffering, Siren and Cold Fear - and heck, I guess we can even throw in Gregory's Horror Show in this catagory too. There's a lot out there for us to choose from. And we've already seen Alan Wake for next-gen, which looks VERY interesting.

Yes, Alone in the Dark was the first 3D Survival Horror. But the formula has been done and done better - it's going to take a reimagining of RE4 proportions to make Alone in the Dark a noteworthy title. But we did see it happen with RE4. It's possible. I'm hopeful. So we shall see...

But the screenies/renders don't fill me with much hope... something about it reeks "We want to be Silent Hill"... pretty, but that's about it...

    It'll be an FPS.

    Good morning.
    A bit dull today.
    Think it might rain?
  • Fatfish #26 6 years ago

Rain? No, only in the north. Should be alright down here in the south. I am assuming of course you are in the south.

Sorry - where are my manners, morning all. Seems quiet so far - obviously everyone is still firing up their kettles!
