Steel Battalion goes offline News

Xbox News by Ellie Gibson

5 September, 2005

Bad news for fans of super-pricey Xbox mech combat title Steel Battalion - Capcom is withdrawing online support for the game's Campaign mode at the end of the month.

According to a statement issued by the publisher, "As of Friday September 30th, 10.00 am - 12.00 pm PST, Capcom will be ending the online services for Campaign Mode of Steel Battalion.

"We appreciate your continued support of our product, and sincerely apologise for any inconveniences this may cause. Please enjoy Campaign Mode for the short time it is still available."

But it's not all doom and gloom: "We will continue services and support for both Free Mission Mode and System Link play." So that's all right then. You just can't do the, er, main game bit.

As you may recall, Steel Battalion was released more than two years ago at the frankly shocking price of £129.99. It came with a three-part controller, y'see, complete with all manner of buttons, gear sticks, joysticks and foot pedals.

As you'll know if you read our review, back in the day, it wasn't really worth the money. And now even less so. Sigh.

I just bought this on ebay yesterday! Does this render Line Of Contact useless?!

Bugger.

I bought the Line of Contact expansion, but only played it *once*...

That controller rocked. Any game where it takes 6 buttons just to turn the mech on is a world of fun!

Hang on...

Is this just the removal of "support" in the sense that Capcom will no longer troubleshoot issues and the like? Campaign mode is surely an offline, single-player mode.

Yus, i just traded mine in last week, never took it online and honestly only played it for a total of 40 mins.

Got a silver pstwo for it... not bad, well bad if you like to trade box size for box size :T

I keep getting pangs to smell the plastic, even though i had 2 years to smell it all i wanted and didn't.

I think it's too hard. I got to mission 6 or something where you have to blow up the boat and stopped. Too hard for me.

I am a pussy :(

Also I have the game and controller but not the box (it got lost in a stupid office move) so selling it on isn't going to net me an awesome price.

This only affects Line of Contact though. The original game is still playable as it was single player.

And since the controller port has changed for the xbox360 the controller wont be usable on the Xbox360 and a possible HDTV mech-game ?

they had better create an adapter for the control socket or something, because i really would like to play Steel Battalion on the new machine.

It's not gonna happen, but one can dream...

The gear lever is a really cruddy piece of hardware, otherwise the rest of the controller is quite good IMO

I'm still contemplating buying the original set some day. I've played it for an hour or so in Game On and loved it to bits. Online would be cool, but I could live without.

I thought you could only play these titles online and with the uber controller anyway... although it was pricey it probably wasn't financially viable to keep the online aspect of SB going that long. :(

@disc

You might be alright. Xbox ports are essentially just USB ports in a different shape, so it would probably just need an adaptor of some sort. Assuming the 360 supports USB, which seems reasonable.
