Oblivion patch this week

Bug-fixes and so on.

Plenty of folks playing The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion have nothing but good to say about it, but there are some who look upon things differently - people who view all this downloadable content nonsense as a bit poor taste given the various bugs that have still yet to be ironed out.

Well, hopefully that's going to be sorted out soon - with a patch due for release on PC and Xbox 360 this week according to Bethesda Softworks PR head Pete Hines.

Speaking to 1UP last week, Hines said that an official patch is in the final stages of development and certification, and that the developer's also looking at options to get it to people on Xbox 360 who don't subscribe to Live. "We'll make it available via whatever means are out there for any game to get updates to people playing the game," he said - and yes, that might include bundling it with an official mag.

We'll let you know when the patch rocks up.

I predict 160+ comments retreading the same old "oh noes! Patches for consoles! We're d00m3d!" sentiments.

No seriously, Whats wrong with Oblivion? I've not noticed anything that really annoys me, so why are people so passionate about this?
  • Poorandugly #5 6 years ago

Like disc, I too am bored with this game. How can I be? It is a great game? Is it something wrong with me? Do I need to be patched?

Never broken badly for me. Frozen once mid-load and once at the menu (due to impatience of my horse armour loading!). Patches are good I guess, but only when they address minor flaws and not as a remedy to hastiily released, broken games.
As Oblivion (on the 360) seems pretty solid to me, this patch is fine by me.
There's something about the fighters' guild quests. I hope they fix that.

The game showed more glitches than Bloodlines ever had if you ask me.

If it means I can finally get the bloody Vampirism cure bint to work properly then I'm all for it!

I've had the game lock up over 10 times on me - all due to random disk-read errors (I checked the disk and its flawless - and will even load data fine on a 2nd attempt) if the patch fixes that problem I'll be very happy.

EDIT: BTW I have the 360 version and have played for 63 hours.

Finally. Now they can fix the "missing stanger" bug from the thieves guild quest so i can finish it. The map says that im standing in front of him, but hes not there. :\

And i somehow managed to acces the last TG quest, even though i didnt even start with the first. :\

I put over 300 hours into this one. During that time I saw more bugs than I care to recall, but including: broken quests - due to NPCs who decide to never leave their homes again, undroppable inventory items (over 10 now), lots and LOTS of random freezes while loading, and so on. There's even one quest with a reproduceable game crash bug.

It's nice that they're fixing it now for new players, but I'm done with the game, every quest done. Every single one. Even with the bugs it's the best thing on the 360.
  • w00t #12 6 years ago

    @bloodflowers
The undroppable items are quest items - the game stops you leaving them in silly places so that quests can't be completed.

Excellent game, but I have hit 2 nasty bugs so far - the Umbra quest crash and the Swampy Cave bug that means you can't finish the Fighters Guild. Quite annoying, but considering the size of the game and the massive number of character combinations and playing styles, I think they did a good job.

Love this game, but got boring after couple of weeks. I haven't even done all the quests. :/

I DL'd the Beta patch, though didn't see any massive improvements, though I supopose they're just suttle anyway. It's about time though. Oh and PC FTW
  • Yossarian #14 6 years ago

about 16 hours in on 360 and have encountered no freezes, lock-ups, disc read errors, or bugs of any kind
  • Tiger_Walts #15 6 years ago

My current game is encountering bugs more and more all the time. The freezing happens sooner, but I do get a warning via stuttering region loads. I also have the radial AI messing up and NPCs don't do their activities after I've been waiting in a town. They'll suddenly come to life if I enter their house though.

    Hope these get fixed.
  • bloodflowers #16 6 years ago

w00t: yeah, they are quest items - but the quests are all completed. It frequently happens when you steal an item back after returning it, but some just stay there anyway without any wrongdoing. Some were gifts for quest completion too.

"I've had the game lock up over 10 times on me - all due to random disk-read errors (I checked the disk and its flawless - and will even load data fine on a 2nd attempt)"

@ Toy_brain - stop checking the disc, it's not the disc, this is just bad error handling where the game hits a problem and uses the generic "Disk Error" message.
  • Skooch #18 6 years ago

Oh, while I think of it, holding down A (if playing on 360) while the title boots clears the cache and really helped me when I started getting long load times.
  • espadachin #19 6 years ago

i must be one of the lucky few, all acheivements, 88 hours and 1 freeze
  • Skooch #20 6 years ago

    "all acheivements, 88 hours"

    /tips hat
  • Nebularhaze #21 6 years ago

will the patch fix frame rate issues and popping?

    >>>>The game showed more glitches than Bloodlines ever had if you ask me.
    ----

Bwahaha, in the PC version maybe, not the 360 ver (ime).

Anyway, 250hrs in on the 360 , main quest done, arena/thieves/fighters/dark brotherhood done, stacks of other random stuff....a few minor bugs, and one freeze in the first 10 hours.

10/10 Bethesda, a fantastic achievement given the scope of the game.
  • smelly #23 6 years ago

I dont mind patches for games as big and complex as this.
  • Darren #24 6 years ago

I have had five freezes in over 250 hours of gameplay time on the 360 version of Oblivion... no major bugs to report, no broken quests and no dirty disc errors.

Maybe I've just been lucky but a patch will be most welcome all the same even if it just fixes the cache problem that causes the game to crash every now and then. Some optimisations to the framerate would be nice for the outdoor locations as well plus the removal of that irritating atmosphere-sapping and totally pointless "Loading area..." message!
