New Sonic titles at E3?

SEGA won't talk about Sonic on PSP, if it exists, but still managed to indicate that we'll see more Sonic at E3 in the process.

SEGA of America has refused to confirm that it has a Sonic title in development for PlayStation Portable, but in doing so has also revealed that it plans "to support its iconic brand with a complimentary line-up of new Sonic products which will be introduced at E3".

Speaking to GameSpot yesterday, an SOA rep reacted to a posting on US retailer GameStop - since removed - which claimed Sonic was coming to PSP this November in a new "Action, Racing, Adventure" title.

"SEGA has not announced a Sonic title for the PSP and therefore cannot confirm that one exists," a spokesperson said, before going on to make the above comment about SEGA's plans for new Sonic titles at E3.

We already know, of course, that SEGA will at least demonstrate multiformat title Shadow the Hedgehog - a spin-off Sonic title featuring his dark alter-ego with a weapons-based slant - and the Nintendo DS version of Sonic.

But other than that there's the possibility of a new "proper" Sonic title, not to mention the "Sonic Collection 2" title mooted by the US press for GameCube, reportedly sporting a line-up that includes the much-wanted Sonic CD and lesser known Sonic the Fighters.

The real question though is whether "new Sonic products" plural and "will be introduced at E3" are significant. If so, we could be looking at previously unannounced titles and not just a rundown and confirmation of what we already know about and suspect.

Either way, we should learn more in the coming days.

Whatever floats your boat, Razz. Make sure he's the 'postman', though. Nasty spikes.

I used to love that "little little blue spikey" guy. Now after his latest numerous outings I hate him too (though deep inside I'm still hoping for him to get a good redone like Mario got with Mario64).

sooo.....if I want to play Sonic CD on my console, I need to shell out another £30 for a Mega Collection that will more than likely have all the other Sonic games again and with two extra games?

God bless the internet and the invention of Mega CD emulators.

Looking forward to Sonic on the PSP as long as it's a proper Sonic Team Japan game.

Sonic Team do not exist any longer... so the games will just be "Sega"...

Indeed, but the elements have to be right. Personally, I thought they came rather close with Sonic Adventure 1 - while definate elements of platforming were there, there were lots of straights and runways to just zip along. And I loved it, as my first Dreamcast game it completely blew me away. Now, I can look back and nitpick - poor collision detection, horrific voice acting, at-times far too sensitive or non-responsive controls, and the odd section of slowdown... but for its time, it was a blast!

The problems for Sonic since have just been a case of it becoming far too "platform"-y... Sonic Heroes the main guilty party, with it's relentless switching between characters and some totally offensive level design. Just a really, REALLY shoddy job...

I don't think there is a "magic formula" with which a Sonic game can be built on. Too much speed makes it more a racing game, too much platforming slows the process down and it stops being as pacy as you'd want and expect a Sonic game to be... it will probably come down to compromise between the two. Perhaps Sega will find that magic sweet-spot eventually, but until then, I just hope they don't continue to throw out anything which stoops down to how bad Sonic Heroes was...

I've been hoping now for a Sonic/F-Zero cross over. It just seems so cool.
