Sudoku to boost PSP numbers

1,000-puzzle-strong Sony title.

Sony this week quietly continued its push to plant the PSP in the pockets (or at least handbags and backpacks) of new gamers with the announcement of Go! Sudoku, giving fans of the Japanese newspaper import 1,000 new puzzles to contend with and the promise of customisation, multiplayer and downloadable content. It's due out on the PSP in Europe this December.

Along with TalkMan and the PSP's multimedia functions, Sudoku seems to be aimed as much at non-gamers as the usual crowd. There are four difficulty levels, as well as detailed tutorials and a help system that gives novices five chances to input the right number in a puzzle before going it alone.

Multiplayer Sudoku will allow up to four players to compete or collaborate in pass (think hot-seat), versus and battle modes, and it'll also be possible to merge records of best times with other PSPs wirelessly. There's also a degree of customisation available - while the game will come stocked with animated background themes, music and sound effects, it will also allow players to supply their own wallpaper images from the PSP's photo directory.

Beyond the basic puzzling, there's also a Time Challenge mode, and the WiFi support include the option to transfer up to five puzzles to a friend to try out - similar to the downloadable demo options in many current PSP titles - with the promise of downloadable content from Sony itself in 2006, including new puzzle packs.

Number games are pointless - where's the story?

I like Sudoku. It's relaxing. It also has the benefit of not requiring £200+ worth of electronics in order to do one. Why not just pick up a paper and a biro for less than a quid?

That's nice. I've been playing the freeware Sudoku game on my PSP for the last six months, at no cost, and it has an infinite puzzle generator (or at least as many as there are possible grids: 6670903752021072936960 or 6.671 × 1021) so this is kinda pointless really.

That's 10 to the 21, apparently EG doesn't support the superscript HTML command.

I love to play Sudoku, and I love my PSP, but they are an exceptionally poor fit. This is a game best played with a pen and paper.

Don't want to rely on one puzzle a day from the newspaper? Get one of the many Sudoku progams out there that will generate an infinite variety of puzzles that you can print out. A piece of paper doesn't run out of batteries, doesn't get damaged when you drop it, and doesn't require you to swap around UMDs to play. None of the PSP features improve the actual game in any way. "Multiplayer", skins, etc., this is all window dressing to try and sell a game that is ill suited to the PSP.

Having tried playing Sudoku on mobile phones, it's definitely best kept to pen and paper. Who the FUCK is going to pay for this?

    Sudoku is good fun.

Though I also fail to see where the fit to PSP comes in... DS I could MAYBE see working (use touch screen to drag numbers into grid) but even then, I wouldn't pay full price when I can get a generator online and print out a different grid each time...

Couldn't the same be said for Crosswords or pretty much all pen&paper puzzles for that matter? They seem to have done alright for themselves.

There's also a free Sudoku game for DS under development:

Yeah seriously, people are NOT going to buy a PSP for this. It'd work well on the DS, but I still wouldn't pay the full price of a game for it.
