With the latest Western-themed Wild Arms RPG for PlayStation 2 still in development, Sony and developer Media Vision have revealed that they're also working on a PlayStation Portable version called Wild Arms XF.
And that's all they've revealed about that, sadly, although we're fairly confident you won't be playing it until next year at least. One thing you might play, if you're Japanese in particular, is Wild Arms: Fifth Vanguard, the aforementioned PS2 game, which is due out over there on December 14th.
In other exciting Fifth Vanguard news, uncovered by IGN during a 10th anniversary shindig in Japan, Sony noted that you'll be able to travel around the game on trains and motorbikes.

One thing the games industry could stand to improve upon is the turnaround time for localising and releasing Japanese RPG's.
Especially in Europe. Seriously, Wild Arms 4 is just about to be released over here (thanks 505) a year (mabye more) after it was released in Japan. And dont get me started on Shadow Hearts 3.............. |

I only played the first Wild Arms, are the others good. If they have a good track record, I may get the PSP version. Or even pick up WA3/4

The Wild Arms games are quite entertaining in general. I usually quite enjoy the mechanics they think up. The system in Wild Arms 4 was a nice change to the standard RPG affair, with a particular favourite of mine being the inclusion of a "Disable Random Battles" button.

Wild Arms 3 was left to be desired, i bought WA3 on the back drop of being intrigued in WA4 because of the battle system looked good and fresh, but WA3 had the more traditional Breath of Fire menu select battle system, and all the allies and enemies just ran round in circles, my cousin was buzzing and ridiculed me for weeks on that.
Don't even get me started on the "find new area" i swear if they put in that sonar mechanic on the World map like WA3.... i'll be pissed. Other than that it was Okay. |

I love the Wild ARMs series (still think 2 was criminally underrated) but haven't played 4 because of the new system and lack of an overworld map. I think exploration and the 'movement mechanics', like the dash running and the sonar system, are pretty important to the gameplay. Anyone recommend 4 to me regardless?
Oh, and the music wasn't done by whatsherface, a very big reason for not getting it. |

4 is definitely worth getting and personally, after getting thoroughly bored with 'classic' Wild Arms after slogging through CodeF, I thought the changes were very welcome. The characters and the story are a bit uninspiring and extremely cliche but I still really enjoyed it.
Oh and don't worry about the absence of Michiko Naruke - Wild Arms 4 has a great soundtrack, not least because of the variety. I'm actually more concerned that 5 might be back to the old Wild Arms. |
