Dead Rising demo out now
Crush zombies for a giggle.
Capcom has released a Dead Rising demo onto Xbox Live Marketplace as of 11am BST today.
The demo weighs in at a pretty hefty 1014.61MB, and play is limited to 15 minutes in one section of the mall.
Major Nelson alerts us to the fact the demo is not available in Mexico, Germany, Australia, New Zealand or Asia.
We're still downloading it, as we suspect many of you are, and we'd love to hear what you make of it. You know, down there.
Dead Rising is due out in the States on August 8th, and should be with us here in Europe on September 8th. It's Capcom's first big Xbox 360 exclusive, providing you don't count Street Fighter II' Hyper Fighting for Xbox Live Arcade, and if you do then well it's the second isn't it you silly person.

Too bad a switch broke down today at work and we will have to fix it; But to do that, we have to wait until everybody leaves because the entire network will be dead. And that is going to take some time. At least I have something to look forward too when I get back home.

Although of course you might get some people arguing that the Gamecube version of RE4 was superior to the PS2.........
The trouble is, if you want to enjoy the best of the best and experience the triple-A titles of coming years, you'll probably need to own a 360, a PS3 and a Wii. OK enough if you have the money, bad news in terms of space and wires and having enough connections etc etc. I have a A/V amplifier and I'm already out of all my available compenent connections...... (the Gamecube is now disconnected since the Sky HD arrived)......

V-sync tearing occurs when the TV displays a new frame before the previous one has finished being drawn resulting in the graphics "tearing" (rippling or wobbling) when you turn. Enabling V-sync prevents this issue but lowers the framerate which is why developers often choose to leave it turned off. Some people don't notice it but it seems more noticeable on HDTVs than standard definition TVs and depending on your tolerance threshold, it's either not a problem at all or very annoying. It's the latter for me but I guess I have sensitive eyes. The only way I can put up with it is if I remove my contact lenses and sit twice as far away from the screen! LOL

I can't play if I feel sick from the shoddy display and angry at my so called "next gen console" can't even play games smoothly like my Snes did over 15 years ago!
If we get many more of these then it's about time we petitioned microsoft to NOT ALLOW games to pass their tcrs (or trcs) with tearing present. The emphasis will be back on the devs to actually sort out their frame rates instead of using this disgusting hack which was only ever an acceptable work around on PC games for the hardcore and not ever meant to be used in mainstream gaming on consoles that are supposedly a known performance target and "plug n play".
Sorry I couldn't speak more about the demo (just started d/l it) but will when I've played it. I just really had to get it off my chest about the tearing present in too many new 360 games/demos and how it is not acceptable!
Comment below viewing threshold Show
As for the tearing, to be honest I was surprised to hear from people who've played the demo, that it has it because the latest HD videos I viewed last night didn't have any and I was specifically looking out for it (sad I know!).
Perhaps the demo is from an earlier build and those videos were taken from a build where it's been fixed? That would be a first... for the Xbox 360 anyway since every demo that has tearing that I've played has always had it in the final game too.
(I hope Peter Moore reads this and takes note that v-sync tearing is not acceptable in next-gen games!)

Comment below viewing threshold Show
Is it only me who notices tearing on the 360 dash too, when it first scrolls accross the screen or sometimes when switching blades. It does this on SD and through VGA.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
Pretty straightforward button bashing on the demo, but knowing Capcom, the final piece will have much more depth and layers.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
Actually I have the Saints Row demo to try out tonight so I am going to deliberately try and find some of this elusive tearing thing.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
It is possible that the video was taken with vsync on with limited assets or a streamlined build meant just for that video (I'm not saying that is what happened but is possible). also the conversion to video itself could mask the tearing (if present).
@glaeken, Tearing is on loads of 360 games, most recently the saints row demo (which I played once and forgot about due to it!). @480p you are not really experiencing what the 360 is attempting to do and the devs have bundles of performance overhead at that res, they probably flip vsync on at that res because it can handle it. Also as you say, the SD TV may be masking it a lot better.
No excuses though, the console is a HD console intended for use on HD (large) TVs therefore it should have enough power to display the games without having to turn vsync off. If it can't then it isn't really a "HD console", it is a PC dressed up as a console with performance issues at 1280x720 and above. And yes, I do own the 360 and am looking forward to many games (i.e i'm not a fanboy of a competing console before anyone thinks it - too old to get into that shit) I'm just getting more and more pissed off with tearing and bad frame rates, not what was promised for "next gen" and I bet Sony end up just as bad with ps3.
@richardiox: There is indeed tearing (and stuttering) on the dash when bringing up the guide panel.
re: Dead Rising, I have still to play it so will reserve judgement on tearing, the game itself though looks great from what i've seen, so long as it's not too brain dead in the gameplay department (store) and has enough atmosphere to back up the simple premise.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
I have not seen a single hint of tearing (and I DO know what it is and I am anal about these kinds of things). The only small complaints can be some slowdown when you use the sledgehammer to attack multiple zombies at the same time.
Other than that it runs really smooth, looks super and is a hell of alot of fun. A must buy for me now.
Not sure if the VGA cable has anything to do with it. I could try with the HD cable to see if there is any tearing there. Infact the only game thus far I have seen tearing in is Ghost Recon and only sometimes.

GTA on a PS2 ran pretty dodgy, truth be told, but it didn't stop millions of people loving it and buying it.
Saints Row is much more defined, pushing loads more geometry and textures around, with longer distance, more effects, physics and AI. It's a great deal of fun - but yeah, there's the odd tear or two. Developers would generally prefer everything in a frame but you know, life's not perfect.
Have not seen DeadRising yet, like most folks we're all in the queue (we have 2 360's pulling it down - and have been since it went up) but a tear or two we can cope with - our preference is entertainment and I ask you all to start thinking that way or just get shot of whatever gaming hardware you have since you have it for the wrong reason.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
I'd rather see the graphics we already had, running smoothly - that's no bad thing, Halo 2 looks great. It would look greater if you couldn't tell it was frames of animation. If anything I've seen /more/ tearing and shoddy frame rates on the 360, than on the X-Box, which means something is very badly wrong.
Graphics aren't everything - so it's a shame we can't all drop this needless high def bullshit, and up the frame rates instead - something that does directly affect gameplay.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
EDIT:
Just played DeadRising (in HD) no problem at all, it's fine. And good fun. You lot might like it.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
FWIW Our Amiga stuff (back in the early 90's) scrolled at 50fps and all the logic (and animation) ran every other frame, but no-one noticed since the bulk of the b/g scrolled without a glitch
Comment below viewing threshold Show
Also, does anyone tech savvy here know if the tearing issue depends on what kind of screen you're using? Is it the same with VGA monitor, HDTV (progressive) and regular TV? Does the cable/connection have any play on this (VGA/HDMI)?
And hey, is antialias enabled on the demo? Not that it matters that much but just asking.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
Whatever, I stand by what I said in my post, that very few developers seem to be tapping into the potential of the Xbox 360, instead they're just making the same kinds of games we played on the Xbox only with hi-def graphics and charging £50 for them. You can count the number of truly outstanding Xbox 360 games on the fingers of one hand... Oblivion for definite, Project Gotham Racing 3... erm... Kameo made nice use of the graphical hardware... ummmm... Rockstar's Table Tennis game is slick and nicely priced... what else? Hmmm... can I get back to you?

Even though I own an HDTV, I'm inclined to agree with you. I think I'd rather play an Xbox game at 480p with anti-aliasing and v-sync enabled if developers can't get the games to run smoothly at 720p, which some can't. I know I can drop the resolution but unfortunately, unless the developer enables v-sync then there's nothing I can do about the tearing.
Incidentally, has anyone ever come across a GameCube game with tearing because I own 40 games and I've never once seen any with v-sync issues even though I've seen plenty of PS2 and particularly Xbox games with this issue?
Comment below viewing threshold Show
I'm nearly 40 years old and I've been playing games since I was 11 (I remember playing 3D Monster Maze on the ZX-81 and being stunned by it!!!). I've noticed in the last few years that the number of games with framerate and tearing issues has increased dramatically, particularly on the Xbox 360, which is odd because I thought it was supposed to be a powerful machine.
Tearing looks terrible on HD LCD TVs and gives me a headache if it's really bad. Since tearing looks worse at hi-def resolutions and the Xbox 360's big selling-point is its ability to run games at 720p, developers really should be ensuring that their games not only look good but also move smoothly. Surely a few less effects, a few less polygons, etc., and you can run any game smoothly with v-sync on? That's how it works on a PC when you tweak a game's settings so it plays well with v-sync on. Xbox 360 developers even have the luxury of working on a fixed-spec format so there really is no excuse for framerate and tearing issues really. Compare Crackdown with Saints Row for example, both are similar games but Crackdown looks far, far better graphically and it even runs smoother with no tearing if the videos are 100% indicative of the game. Now that is impressive and a good example of a developer working within their limitations.
While I appreciate that the Xbox 360 is new hardware and developers are still getting to grips programming it, wouldn't it be advisable for some of them to learn to walk first before they run, e.g. cut down on unnecessary graphical effects and detail in order to maintain a stable and smooth framerate first and foremost? I know some do, like Bizarre Creations and Io, kudos to them but too many seemingly don't, e.g. Climax (MotoGP '06), From Software (Chromehounds), Volition (Saints Row).

Well that's how it is for some us with v-sync tearing. It actually gives me headaches! When we've paid £600+ for HDTVs because Microsoft told us that hi-def is going to revolutionise the way we play our £50 games, don't you think we have a right to expect those games to look good running on those TVs? Too damn right we do!
If I'd have known that so many Xbox 360 games were going to be plagued with tearing I honestly would not have bought an HDTV and would have just continued using my old 21" Sony TV where the issues are far less noticeable!
Maybe I should consider the PS3 after all... /ponders
Comment below viewing threshold Show
Until devs make 100% of games on the 360 and ps3 you wont see the really great stuff, the problem is sony wont be in a rush to kill the ps2 off its the companys cash cow.

I'm not a teenager who doesn't know what he's talking about, I'm nearly 40, I've been playing games for nearly 28 years, and I used to program myself so I do know what I'm talking about. Stop being so elitist. I'm perfectly entitled to express my views on Xbox 360 games since I've bought many of them (at least 30) and it's people like me who ultimately pay your wages. Make good, technically sound, innovative games and I'll buy them. Make crap ones and I won't. /wink
Comment below viewing threshold Show
In answer to this question, it would seem that to many developers (not necessarily you before you get all offended again) that that is exactly what the next-gen is about. More power for prettier graphics.
Thankfully there are a few developers like Bethesda who put ambition before graphics and that's why Oblivion is currently the best game on the Xbox 360 by light years, despite its technical issues and bugs (in my opinion, obviously). So, yes, I do have respect for developers, the GOOD ones anyway. /wink
Anyway enough! Dead Rising has just downloaded so I'm off to check it out and marvel at how Capcom got so many zombies on screen at once... LOL
Comment below viewing threshold Show
What a fun little game this is. Slick, polished and above all else fun. The bodies and blood stay around adding to the feeling of carnage, and although the gameplay is pretty simplistic, you'll be enjoying yourself so much wiping out hordes of zombies in inventive ways that you won't care. I've not noticed any tearing either. The detail on the faces is impressive as well. The game gets a big thumbs up from me for entertainment factor and technical prowess. Dunno how long the gameplay will last but so long as I'm loving every nano-second of it, I don't care. Riddick only took me six hours to complete but it's one of the best games I've ever played. Will Dead Rising be the same. Tune in next month...
Add Capcom to the list of developers I respect, Manic!
Comment below viewing threshold Show
Not trying to make excuses...honest! Next year things will be better, chin up!
Personally I hardly notice this stuff( to busy trying to stay alive!!) when playing on my SDTV but don't be downhearted...look at the last gen first wave of games...hardly pushed the boat out, eh?
Things will only get better.....

Well said mate and I agree completely.
Glad to hear your enjoying the game as well, but more importantly. Doesn't it just go to show that the 360 CAN handle games with V-Sync enabled?

I really like the idea of taking photos throughout the game and getting them rated. I made a nice one featuring a bold guy with a hanger stuck in his mouth
Technically this title is really well done. After all this vsync talk I can confirm that there is no tearing at all (playing at 720p). Framerates are very stable except very, very few hiccups slashing a a couple of zombies with the sledgehammer crushing some legs. But in my hour of playing I only experienced such a hiccup twice and the second one wasn't really that noticeable at all. Characters look good, especially in cut scenes with very high detail face textures - so far the best I have seen in a game.
Bottom line: A really fun game. As Darren said the final game has yet to proof if the fun lasts until the end, there is a lot you can do but it does feel a bit like the same over and over again. In the end I think with the final game you actually start doing your quests and not just simply play around with all the things you can use to kill zombies and that's when the game will fully unfold it's glory.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
spongebob: Nothing wrong with Darren, he's got an opinion and he's able to communicate it. Would you prefer yet more people with dumbass one liners instead?

I think the multiple storylines and the fact that you can use vehicles in the full-game will add to it's appeal and replayability. The game apparently only lasts three hours real-time, so I've heard, one hour for each day of game time. The aim is to survive 72 hours but Capcom say that you have to replay the game in order to experience the full story. Sounds great to me. The cutscenes were very slick and had me itching to find out what happens next.
I can't wait for the full game which comes in a tin case for £39.99 if you pre-order it from Gameplay.com or Play.com. The wait until 8th September is going to be a long one...
Comment below viewing threshold Show
Gameplay wise, well I've not actually played it as a game yet as I was too busy running into each shop and seeing what could be used as weapons, the gameplay is "basic" but I can see how the online leaderboards, photos and achievements will ramp up the fun a massive amount. The thing is, because the mall is so well realised it feels fun just doing these basic tasks within in.
That could wear off though after a short while, part of me wants to stop playing the demo now so I can forget all about it until I get the full version on release day, but it's just so damn cool in there - a real interactive "shaun of the dead", better with an audience (in my case my fiancee' but anyone will do). Love the skateboards, the different clothes you could wear and the fact that not just anything will knock out / destroy a zombie, seems most of the objects are realistic in that they do the sort of damage you would expect which heightens the tension and realism.
Cut scenes were very good looking (in engine!) and well animated. This is defo the first big game of the 2nd wave of titles for the 360 and hopefully all of them will be free of tearing or very minimal as this title seems to be.
Nice one capcom.. if this looks this good bring on RE5 asap!

@Greggywocky - The point of being able to wear different clothes is to make the game a little more real - after all it would be daft to be able to go into shops and not pick up and use the items in there - but also to add a bit of comedy and variety. Running around in a child's outfit wearing a horse's head and burning zombie's faces off with a hot frying pan has to be the most amusing thing I've ever done in a game ever. Dead Rising is worth the asking price for that alone, the fact that there is also a game in there too is just added value!
