Next-gen McRae confirmed

And coming in 2007.

Codemasters has confirmed that a new Colin McRae Rally game is currently in development for next-gen platforms.

But which platforms, exactly? Well, they're not saying just yet, but we do know that the new game "will go beyond the series' point-to-point rallying to deliver the most diverse selection of extreme off-road competitions." EVER, presumably.

You can expect mud, dirt and gravel racing events from all over the world, including Hill Climb and Rally Cross competitions. There will be officially licensed cars and tracks based on their real-life counterparts, plus an online multiplayer mode.

"The all-new Colin McRae Rally will be a real evolution for the series and offer a massive variety of off-road events, more than any other single-championship rally game has before," according to executive producer Gavin Raeburn.

"It's being designed to offer a totally accessible, high-speed and adrenalin-fuelled ride for newcomers to the series, yet race hardened McRae players will be able to delve under the bonnet and immerse themselves in the most challenging of competitions." Well, the second most challenging of competitions, the first most challenging being to produce a press release about a driving game that doesn't include the phrase "adrenaline-fuelled", obviously.

CMR'07, as it's been workingly titled, is out next year, with one shot to check out in the meantime.

In true tradition of the series, the graphics look convincingly like the 19th century. The game itself is amazing, though.

Good to see a new direction for the genre rather than another rehash. Wonder if it's the same people who made Toca 3? If so, should be worth getting exited over!

Yay, another year another game where you race against the clock...........how many times will Rallying games be released? The only way I'd play this is if its like Rallisport Challenge 2 (i think its called) on Xbox........there was a bit more variation to that rather than just point-to-point against the clock.

It does sound like Codies are trying to add variation to it but I won't hold my breath......so many times this lot have promised in the past then after wielding the axe the game comes out very similar to previous incarnations of the genre!

Codemasters and Colin McRae Rally games. More same more of - Re-has# -dull.

Having never played a Colin McRae Codemasters game i shouldn't make comment. Although i have seen such a game running and the way the tress not so much popped up as popped up in ordered lines running from either the left or the right of the screen. Made me run a mile. Still haunts me to this day. The words Colin McRae Rally sends shivers down my spine.

Interesting how McRaes 3 through 5 were essentially the same game re-sold each year, and each year Eurogamer gave it a high mark. I feel an 8/10 coming...

In my book, there hasn't been a better rally game than V-Rally (the first one) on the Playstation - by making you race around circuits, you actually had a chance to learn the courses and improve your times.

I wonder, will Next Gen technology finally mean the death of CMR's shite handling model?

WRC has wiped the floor with CMR several years in a row now. Hard to see that changing.

I still reckon they should allow a PSP or DS (yeah right), to connect to the main console to display pace notes (with map) which someone else can read out to the "driver". That would be a hoot.

For me this has been the same for the majority of Codies games.........they're trying to be EA but falling short!

Colin McRae series, LMA series, TOCA Race Driver* series.........same thing year after year with new additions if you believe the press releases but actually turns out to be pretty much the same

*I haven't tried Race Driver 3.......was so disappointed with 1 & 2 its completely put me off the series, especially as the old Playstation series was so good!
