Next-gen Sonic this year

Says top SEGA bigwig.

SEGA Europe CEO Mike Hayes has confirmed that our old friend Sonic the Hedgehog will get his first outing on next-gen consoles next year.

Speaking to Tech Digest, Hayes said: "SEGA will continue to evolve the franchise. A big part of this will be a new Sonic title, to be released on to next-gen platforms later this year."

But on which next-gen platforms, exactly? Well, back in September, SEGA said Sonic would be coming to PS3 and Xbox 360. Hayes said that SEGA is "looking forward" to developing games for the Nintendo Revolution, too, so here's hoping.

Hayes also had some bad news for beardy retro fans, stating: "There are no plans for Dreamcast to make a comeback. At the moment SEGA are concentrating solely on developing quality software for both current and next generation games consoles."

Ah well. It's Sonic's birthday 15th in June and SEGA has big celebrations planned, so you never know, he might appear on Xbox 360 around then. In the meantime, why not take a look at these lovely screenshots.

I think it will be... ok. Like that Sonic Adventure game. Heck, nevermind the next-gen consoles, when is a 2D Sonic coming out on the PSP?

oh great, how are Sega going to mangle Sonic this time around?
So rubbish Sonic game but at least he'll be all "next-gen" shiney eh? :(

I find the word "bigwig" to be very annoying.

If it's Sonic Adventure but 360-fied I'll be more than happy. There is no limit to the number of times I'll buy that game (currently about 8 I think).

Uhh...this article needs mopping up...the title and the article contradict each other! Which one is correct?
  • oerhoert #9 6 years ago

Oh, so mesmerizingly "meh" that I can't even fathom it. Meh! Sega! Meh! Hear?

I used to be a huge Sonic fan but after the poor quality of Sonic Heroes and Shadow the Hedgehog I've lost my excitement for the series. Five years ago this game would have been one of my most wanted but now I'm not really bothered at all by them.

Since I played Sonic Heroes, I pretty much cringe every time a new sonic game is announced.

Although, having said that, I nearly bought shadow the other week as it was down to like 7 quid in tescos a week after it was released. or something.....

Anyway, only Nintendo can get away with putting their heroes in a constant barrage of shite. I think this could be the game that finishes sonic off (if its crap, of course).

Dr Robotnik realises if he had bowsers army of koopas he would be virtually unstoppable, Robotniks brains would also benefit bowser's quest for domination - thus is formed the most terrifying alliances ever.

Que Sonic and Mario letting bygones be bygones, realising they must join forces to topple the largest threat the world has ever seen.

The game to finish Sonic off? Are you nuts? He's like Mario, there'll always be people buying the games not matter how awful they are.

Sega have ruined 3D Sonic games since the Dreamcast died. Sonic Adventure 2 was good, but only in the Sonic/Shadow levels, everything since(Heroes/Shadow/Riders) has been awful. I'll be amazed if Sega can pull a decent game out of this franchise after all this time.

Sonic is dying... his is a franchise long in need of renovation. It's become far too aimed at a childish audience, so much so it has alienated those who were with him all those fifteen years ago...

I don't mean the series needs to go to GTA-extremes. But SEGA need to realise many of Sonic's fans are now grown adults, and we're demanding more than the crap we've had the last few games...

Fully agreed. Maybe the best is if they would just keep it simple and build on the original fast-paced platform action - not necessarily keeping it 2D - while tuning the game mechanics, instead of trying to turn every new 3D game into a saturday morning cartoon, with teletubby-esque cutscenes. Or even worse, into that Shadow aberration.

Blackdog: Mario & Sonic could run along togther holding hands.
Wait a minute, that sounds very wrong.

I think Mario enjoys that sort of thing

The recent sonic games on consoles have been pure shit, Sonic heroes and Shadow were painfully crap. They should make the game 2d but with 3d backdrops or kill Sonic off for good

"At the moment SEGA are concentrating solely on developing quality software for both current and next generation games consoles"

SO WHERE HAS IT BEEN FOR THE LAST FIVE YEARS!?
  • NegativeZero #24 6 years ago

I'll be all over this if it's more along the lines of the original Sonic Adventure - that game sold me my Dreamcast. Since then it went rapidly downhill, which is a real shame. Sonic Adventure 2's only good parts were playing with Sonic and Shadow. Hopefully they'll realise this and go back to games where you can only play as Sonic. Or maybe two-player Co-op with Tails or Knuckles, that's as far as I'd go.

In case any Sega / Nintendo execs are around... please consider getting together to discuss adding Sega franchises to the inevitable revolution iteration of the Super Smash Brothers game. The very concept of beating the stuffing out of Mario with Sonic (or vice versa if you swing that way) will sell the game.

Not enough people have played Sonic Rush it seems. It's great! Reminds me why I actually like Sonic, I'd forgotten after the huge barrage of shit I've played since the Sega Saturn was released [sonic-wise of course]
