New Sonic Wii screenshots

See how the remote works.

Sega has released some new screenshots for Wii title Sonic Wild Fire - and if you've been wondering how the game will work with the remote controller, they're worth checking out.

As you can see, there are little pictures in the bottom left hand corner of the screens which show what you'll need to do with the controller to make Sonic perform the action on screen - shaking it to make him run, for example.

To learn more about how the whole thing works, why not read our E3 preview, if you haven't already. Sonic Wild Fire is currently slated for a spring 2007 release.

Woah.. shaking to move??? Exactlly what I fear about the Wii. I don't want normal games where I need to do silly stuff instead of normal joystick operations... I want weird games that invent new stuff around the abilities of the controller!
  • Blerk #4 6 years ago

    Shake to run. Genius.

    No, really.
  • JetSetWilly #5 6 years ago

I thought the preview said it was tilt left or right to move Sonic.
  • Sko #6 6 years ago

The preview mentions occasional 'flicking' for an extra burst of speed, using the boost bar but no shaking. Are you sure you're interpreting those icons correctly, Ellie? They appear to be showing tilting the controller left/right to move left right to me.

You wouldn't want to set off the knee-jerk reaction brigade... oh, n'mind.

Edit: "Titling"? What the hell was I thinking about. O.o

After the bonus levels in Sonic Rush I have every confidence that this could end up completely and utterly awesome. Don't they look stretched though? To me they seem like widescreen shots displayed in 4:3.

Edit: Oh and there's no shaking in these pics, there's tilting. You get to read comics for homework!

The glorious return of the blue hedgehog?
    Looks like it!

    Impressive...
  • jellyhead #9 6 years ago

As i said yesterday my mate has played this and he had the same worries about performing stupid controller movements but he is totally converted now. He said it's only a "flick" and it works. He's gone from cynic to interested in one game, looks like this game could be good for the Wii.

ha! for the love of god, dont sneeze

    >Edit: Oh and there's no shaking in these pics, there's tilting. You get to read comics for homework!

Phew.. ok.. just tilting left/right is MUCH better ;)

Yeah, I agree with this, i don't think that you've interpreted those correctly, can you imagine the amount of 'shakes' needed for a fast hedgehog like Sonic? talk about wrist strain! - it seems to me like they are holding down a button and steering Sonic. Like a car.

It still all seems very gimmicky to me tho...
  • jellyhead #13 6 years ago

Gimmicky or not, i'm up for a go!
  • SimonM7 #14 6 years ago

    >Phew.. ok.. just tilting left/right is MUCH better ;)

To TURN, silly, not back and forth to run. :)
  • Darkedge #15 6 years ago

lean left and right to steer and you push forward for a speed boost.
Thats what I think it is.
The graphics as this is Wii are very gamecube. I'm a gameplay man but a bit of a graphics whore, it's looking quite poor.

Go over to Ign and they've got Hi-res videos of the demo from E3, it looks much better actually in motion.
  • Kiigan #17 6 years ago

I can't see this working well at all.
  • djchump #18 6 years ago

It would be nice if the news-writers checked the veracity of their claims before speculating - misinforming readers will only lead to news articles being seen as unreliable.
  • rinoaMW #19 6 years ago

Hell - it would be nice if news writers actually read the previews of the people they work with. Especially after providing a link containing contradicting information..

    :p
  • SimonM7 #20 6 years ago

It's obvious this site is Sonicist! Messages like KILL TAILS! are plentiful, and not even Sonic Rush *did it* for these people. Might aswell get accurate info and fair takes on these games elsewhere. :p
  • disussedgenius #21 6 years ago

I actually didn't mind Tails until Sonic Rush.

After navigating the map and fighting a few bosses I now wish awful murder upon the stupid little git.
  • jellyhead #22 6 years ago

Not so keen on Tails but Cream the Rabbit, oh yeah.
    She'd be a goer, like a Rabbit i reckon. ;)
  • MasterThief #23 6 years ago

Shaking to run, flicking to run, spinning to run. They're all as unneccesarily hard work as each other. A classic case of innovation for the sake of innovation. Not because it actually adds anything to the experience.
  • jellyhead #24 6 years ago

I'm waiting til i've tried it before passing judgement but the initial hands-on reports sound good so i'm optimistic.
    Workout + Games + Fun = \0/

"Shaking to run, flicking to run, spinning to run. They're all as unneccesarily hard work as each other. A classic case of innovation for the sake of innovation. Not because it actually adds anything to the experience."

Wow, well I geuse that's settled it, no need to review games or play them anymore EG. You can just hire him and let him see a couple screenshots.
  • SimonM7 #26 6 years ago

After watching japanese Sonic X with subs it's difficult to not like Tails. Cream on the other hand.. it's like they felt had to go up a pitch above both Tails and Amy, and it's not so much voice as it is noise. I'm thorough Sonic whipped though, and the only characters I really dislike are Vector and Charmy of Heroes and Chaotix *fame*.

edit: Also, to those of you who still don't get it. Sonic runs whether you leave the controller on the table or hit yourself in the face with it. There's no shaking to run, no tilting, no spining, no yelling, blowing, dancing, singing. You just make him go left and right aswell as speed up briefly - Panzer Dragoon Orta style - by tilting it in the appropriate direction. Jumping is done by pressing a button. The game has plenty of different situations where you need to do different things, a lot like the screen tapping bits in Sonic Rush bonus levels, but there's no unneccessarily grinding activities required to make him run. Stop trying to slam a game before you know anything about it.

    @ Freek

I'm not passing judgement. I'm just hypothesising, that's all.
  • Sko #28 6 years ago

Yeah, your "A classic case of innovation for the sake of innovation." really sounds like 'hypothesising'.
  • MasterThief #29 6 years ago

Well then, let's hope that Sega proves me wrong!

    ;)
  • disussedgenius #30 6 years ago

Simon, I'm not sure thats totally correct, if you watch the ign videos there are a couple of times where Sonic actually stops, so the run can't be automatic. I'm also sure that you don't run by shaking, it's probably a case of something simple like 'tipping' the controller on the x axis rather than the y one to accelerate.
  • JetSetWilly #31 6 years ago

_neon: But then why upgrade to any next-gen console at all? I'll buy a Wii because it'll be the only place to play the latest iterations of the franchises I enjoy. The same is true for PS3 and X360. What else do you do if you want to play MGS4 or Halo 3?
  • smelly #32 6 years ago

The Wii is not really next-gen

Oh ffs.. Thats like saying the ps2 was "last gen" just because it didnt have as good gfx as the other two.

The wii's power has been improved over cube, uses dvd's, has online, uses new controller, etc etc so therefor it's a large improvement and therefor next gen. okay?

  • chupachups #33 6 years ago

Wouldn't this be better illustrated with a video clip?
  • smelly #34 6 years ago

If you're not bothered by lack of Hi-Def (which i'm guessing most people are not, as Hi-Def screens cost alot at the present time) i'm sure all Wii games could be ported to the Cube.

Erm.. you DO realise that the Wii ISNT hi-def dont you?

i'm sure all Wii games could be ported to the Cube.

And im sure all current 360 games could be ported to the xbox.. hang on, most of them ARE ported from the xbox to the 360 :-)

    So that's a rubbish argument.

There's currently not much on 360 or indeed previewed ps3 games which couldnt be done on current generation with worse gfx. No doubt people will only quote my first sentence here and miss what i'm about to say .. BUT that's not to say there wont be some in the future. But it does kinda negate your argument.

There are plenty of reasons to upgrade to the Wii from the cube. And not JUST for power...
  • cauldie #35 6 years ago

If you want to think of it as a upgraded gamecube then that's fine, its your opinion. it's true that much of the technology inside the Wii is the result of miniturised and upgraded gamecube tech. but there's a lot more too the machine than just having the new controller and a facelift.

It could be reminiscent of sony, releasing the Slimline PS2 similarly 4 years after the release of the original. Look how many people upgraded their machine when it was exactly the same thing.
  • chupachups #36 6 years ago

"The new controller is interesting, although Nintendo could have released this kind of controller for the Cube years ago."

There's no point releasing a controller separately, because only a fraction of a console's userbase buy a particular add-on, so publishers can't support it. Even the Eyetoy only got 20 games despite the PS2 being the most successful console ever, because there weren't enough Eyetoy owners to justify hundreds of titles supporting it.

The reason the Wii controller is revolutionary isn't because it's got 3D movement and location sensing, that has all been done before on previous add-ons for PCs and other systems.

The reason the Wii controller is revolutionary is because they're packing one of these in with every single Wii sold, so publishers on the Wii will be able to support it from day one.

And yes, this is a reason enough to buy a Wii for many of us, because no games platform has ever supported a 3D controller as standard. It'll add something new to the gameplay, so it's worth checking out. Graphics haven't added anything new to gameplay since they went 3D.

The Wii concept really interests me, but the graphics are quite yester-year, in my opinion.

Looking at the likes of Crysis and The Witcher, plus Xbox 360 games like Elder Scrolls, and even Table Tennis impress me. Agree that game play is the most important, but some of the gfx on Oblivion are truely amazing and make the experience better, in my opinion.

All Wii gfx look poo, again, IMHO
  • Carrybagma #38 6 years ago

/note to self: must buy hi-def telly and hi-def console in order to play sameoldshit games in hi-def, 'cos anything hi-def is so much better
  • smelly #39 6 years ago

It could be reminiscent of sony, releasing the Slimline PS2 similarly 4 years after the release of the original.

it's totally amazing me how many people are failing to realise that the both the graphic power and cpu power of the wii HAVE been upgraded. It also runs on dvd's so more storage space than the cube, it is online (unlike the cube), and has nintendos entire back catalogue (unlike the cube).

AND it has a new controller.

What part of all this dont you trolls get?
  • Carrybagma #40 6 years ago

/note to self: must buy Wiimote (but no Wii); try plugging it into hi-def 360 and then post on EG saying it's shit 360 controller is better.
  • Carrybagma #41 6 years ago

I tried plugging my iPod into my dishwasher the other day. It didn't work.

These look like screengrabs from the video they played at E3. Nothing new here. :(
  • Genji #45 6 years ago

Innovation for the sake of innovation?

Yeah, probably. I couldn't care less.
  • SimonM7 #46 6 years ago

Yeah, sure neon, people are likely to buy a peripheral and consider it the next step in Nintendo hardware. (!)

I don't even know how you fail to see the significance in releasing new hardware with the Wii-mote as the default and standard controller, over releasing some new gadget alongside bongo drums, fishing poles and dance mats.
