Sonic Rivals for PSP News

PSP News by Tom Bramwell

3 May, 2006

Death Jr developer Backbone's working on a brand new Sonic title for PlayStation Portable, SEGA announced this morning as part of its run of pre-E3 announcements.

Called Sonic Rivals, it's a mixture of old-style speedy platform action and four-player wireless action - promising 2D gameplay in 3D environments, are you can see in the first run of screenshots.

Instead of exploring levels, it sounds like Sonic will be racing his rivals through them. You'll be able to control any of four characters - including Sonic and Knuckles - each with a winding storyline, with boost moves and power-ups with which to trip up the others as they go. On the way, there'll be various traps and hazards to dodge, courtesy of Eggman.

Sonic Rivals is due out this autumn on PSP, and should be on-hand at E3.

Meanwhile, SEGA's line-up for the show grows ever clearer, with Sonic Rivals joining Full Auto 2 (PS3), SEGA Rally (PS3, X360, PC), World Snooker Championship/Challenge 2007 (PS2, PS3, X360, PSP), Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz (Wii) and Virtua Tennis 3 (PS3, X360) on the cards.

They should have done clean 2D vector graphics. Screw this PS1 style half 3d nonsense.

This is not what I wanted from a PSP Sonic. :( Sonic Team always do this.. just because the technology is there, doesn't mean they have to abuse it. A 2D title would have looks gorgeous on the PSP's screen.

Disappointed that it isn't a straight platformer...

Sounds like something in between a platformer and that Sonic R thing...

Oh well, maybe it won't be that bad.

This looks PS1/N64 graphics; This is piss poor for the PSP.

I hope it fails miserably so that SEGA finally gives up on Sonic

Yeah - not impressed. The graphics aren't as inspiring as the 16-bit era. Maybe it looks better moving. Doubt it though

Me too... if it's FAST, then I'd be convinced to give it a go.

/Waits for the trailer.

Looks fine to me, however, I don't get why they'd make a racing game that looks like that. Surely a straight platformer with racing bits/boss sequences would have been a better move.
