Activision gets James Bond News

MGM Interactive and EON Productions have awarded Activision the rights to develop and publish games based on the James Bond film licence until 2014.

While MGM's Travis Rutherford paid tribute to Activision's "proven expertise" and "core competency in managing large movie franchises", and Activision's Mike Griffith described Bond as "the ultimate action movie franchise", it was the words left unsaid that will have the biggest impact on gamers and industry figures alike - specifically that Electronic Arts will no longer be handling Bond titles.

The fact that the press release doesn't specify that Activision has "exclusive rights" could yet be telling - EA has yet to issue any comment on the announcement - but given the scope of the deal it's unlikely to mean anything else. It's difficult to imagine that EA will be allowed to develop competing games in tandem.

Under the terms of the deal announced today, Activision is free to develop and publish games for all current and next-generation consoles, PC and handheld platforms based on James Bond films - as well as non-movie based games.

Until now, EA has enjoyed a similar, exclusive relationship with MGM and EON - producing games based on recent Bond films Tomorrow Never Dies and The World Is Not Enough, as well as bespoke Bond products like GoldenEye: Rogue Agent, Agent Under Fire, Nightfire and Everything or Nothing, and most recently beginning a trawl through the franchise's back catalogue for inspiration, turning out the multi-platform From Russia With Love adaptation.

But while Agent Under Fire and Everything or Nothing enjoyed relative acclaim, most of EA's recent Bond titles have been roundly slammed by critics - particularly GoldenEye: Rogue Agent, which was seen by many as the polar opposite of the game it set out to emulate, Rare's Nintendo 64 smash hit GoldenEye.

All of EA's Bond titles have enjoyed some degree of commercial success of course, and several have topped the charts, but MGM and EON may well be hoping that Activision can find inspiration where critics felt EA could not.

Speaking about today's announcement, MGM executive vice president Travis Rutherford said, "Activision's proven expertise in developing cutting edge games, their core competency in managing large movie franchises combined with the global appeal of the James Bond property, will create a new benchmark for the next-generation gaming experience."

Meanwhile, Activision Publishing's president and CEO Mike Griffith described Bond as "the ultimate action movie franchise" and said the company was looking forward to establishing a long-term relationship with its new partners. "James Bond storylines are rich with style, drama and action, all of which lend themselves perfectly to developing extraordinary games that capture the thrill of being the most celebrated secret agent in the world," he added.

EA, as yet, has had nothing to say.

Look at it this way. MGM and EON seem to have forcibly taken back the 007 licence from EA. I can only see it as a very good thing, because they sold regardless of the fact that all but one or two were about as much fun as hammering nails into your ankles while Spice Up Your Life is played directly into your eardrums and you're being drowned alive in marmite. Actually, the former description probably is a more entertaining way to pass the time...

If, as it seems, EA have indeed lost the 007 licence (love the way that comes out), then it's a pretty big hammerblow. Sure, EA have a lot of franchises now but nothing on the scale of James Bond. It's like SoE losing the rights to Star Wars, while there is still a trace left of what they have done, the future is reliant on franchises which aren't in any way as universally identifiable.

Shock announcement too... you almost feel sorry for EA... actually, no. We shouldn't. EA had some great oppertunities to make awesome games and instead turned out a ton of shit. A good lesson to EA and others... don't abusively milk the licences you have...

So long as Activision support the PC with the 007 releases they will already have earned more brownie points than EA.

EA's Bond games have, on the whole, been a bag of shit. Activision won't have to try very hard to make them better.

This is a pleasing 'fuck you' in the face of EA's movie franchise dominance.

OMG! It's like someone said "how can we possibly make Bond games even worse?"

Now they'll be shallow, irritating bland-o-shooters with crap presentation. At least before you had the EA gloss.

Well I think this is a good oportunity to see if all our EA bashing is justified. If Activision pump out the same old shite as EA do then really we don't have a leg to stand on. If they make something that kicks serious bootie then we can all rejoice in the streets in a ticker-tape parade as we celebrate the demise of a small limb of the global moron-inducing machine that is EA.

You guys are so self-righteous, slagging off EA like that. How are Activision better? Yeah yeah, I know, 'they're not EA'' is a good start - but is that all?

EDIT: By the way, that is NOT saying that EA's 007 games did not suck. Every company puts out some brilliant games and some clunkers. Activision are on to a golden chance here- let's see what they make of it.

How does that work? Only one company at a time can publish shite games?

EDIT: Oi, where'd my comment go?

Make a game fun as "The spy who loved me" for Amiga (like a tribute to the movie). Or make a game slower, more adventure-ish and with beautiful scenery. Not just fast paced action FPS that just survives on the brand.

Monolith should make the Bond-games. NOLF felt more bondish than any other bond-game made.

What bad timing for EA. All that money down the drain, and activision got the license on the verge of the eagerly awaited new bond movie.

But can we really get excited? With Activision (nearly as bad as EA) at the helm? The best choice would have been Ubisoft.
