Sony announces SingStar Rocks!
Well, they would.
Sony's announced that the next SingStar package will be rock-themed, with 30 more licensed tracks from the likes of The Killers, Bloc Party, Nirvana and Blur.
It's called "SingStar Rocks!" As is tradition, it'll feature all the correct music videos in the background as you sing along, trying to match your drink-slurred output to the music. It'll be released on PS2 this spring.
Apparently there are "more acts to be confirmed", but Sony's released a preliminary line-up of bands and songs to consider, listed below.
One thing that this week's announcement doesn't make clear is whether Rocks! will include any new features. Following the success of the original SingStar, subsequent editions changed the dynamic and tweaked certain elements, but that iterative technology approach seemed to die away with the most recent addition, SingStar '80s.
Not that we're complaining too much. There'll always be room for new SingStar if the pricing's reasonable. Here's the current listing for Rocks:
- Maximo Park - Apply Some Pressure
- Hole - Celebrity Skin
- Stereophonics - Dakota
- The Killers - Somebody Told Me
- Snow Patrol - Run
- Bloc Party - Banquet
- Franz Ferdinand - Do You Want To?
- Kasabian - Club Foot
- Razorlight - Somewhere Else
- Jet - Are You Gonna Be My Girl?
- Rolling Stones - Paint It Black
- Nirvana - Come As You Are
- The Subways - Rock 'n' Roll Queen
- Bowling For Soup - 1985
- The Bravery - An Honest Mistake
- Blur - Song 2

It's hardly going to be full of Metallica and Napalm Death tracks is it?

If they call it rock, it should be rock, not shitty indie bands.
Otherwise call it Singstar 'Light Rock'! or Singstar 'Indie Rock'!
My opinion is that it 'should' have Metallica etc. Guitar hero did a pretty good job of a rock list (although Franz Ferdinand crept in) and that is doing rather well.
tbh, a proper rock list would probably sell better in the US than most of these bands anyway
Mind you there are supposed to be 30 tracks in total, so still a chance to redeem itself.

'course, the difficulty level will probably be too high for most people to play the game with much success.

or singstar mock rock...
90% of that line up is not rock

I don't really see anything particularly rocking, and the Stereophonies are probably the furthest thing from rock imaginable.

Stereophonics = Blandest, most lifeless band ever...
Saw them at Reading once, easily the worst band of the whole festival.

there are many different genres of rock, it's just that most of these bands seem to straddle the line between indie and rock, (with a leaning towards indie IMO)

It's supposed to be fun. It's supposed to have songs which most people know and can join in with. It's a party game.

Fozzie: There are many games that have music that pander to people that like pop, that like dance, that like R&B, and when one that comes out to pander to the rock fans, we rightly get a bit peeved when it doesn't have many decent rock songs in it. Most of my mates are into rock and have often said it'd be cool to have a karaoke game based on rock tracks, but i know for a fact they'd only sing 3 or 4 of the songs of this set.
As i said above though, it'll probably do better than a true rock Karaoke, which is just because it does pander to the masses and not the rock crowd.

Singstar: Goth would be funny as hell for my uni reunions. Singstar: EBM would be the ultimate, but would only sell about 3 copies.

But Song 2 is awesome.

I'd prefer to see Singstar Raps as I thought the rap-o-meter was fairly innovative in 80s, and I'd like to see it used on more than 2 tracks.
Singstar Techno would be good though. There's not 2 Unlimited in everyone's life.
