Advent Children here in 2006

Let's hope so, anyway.

Almost two years after Final Fantasy movie Advent Children was first announced, Eurogamer has learned that the film will be coming to Europe on UMD and DVD this year.

That's according to a source close to the project, who also said that Sony would be handling distribution and release outside of Japan. The source, who spoke to us after Sony and Square Enix were unable to help with enquiries, said that if all goes to plan the movie will be out in Europe by the end of 2006.

The news comes after US website TheDigitalBits also said the film would be released there this year. According to TDB, "It's taking a little extra time to work with the director to get all the supplemental elements finished" - hence the delay.

But let's not get our hopes up too much. Square-Enix previously told us that Advent Children will be out by the end of the year - in, er, May 2005. Ah well.

  • Universal_Hamster #2 6 years ago

Finally, I need to know, whats the big deal about this movie?
  • kenty #3 6 years ago

  • ecureuil #4 6 years ago

Wow, it's coming out this year? Great news, except.. it was supposed to have been out last year, and everyone has already seen the fan sub already. What the hell is taking so long?
  • ProfessorLesser #5 6 years ago

UH... it's just a bit awesome, really.
  • Quiiick #6 6 years ago

    It's a wonderful movie!
Much better than "Final Fantasy: Spirits Within". And even that one was beautiful.
  • TiTaniXNEz #7 6 years ago

You failed to mention how incomprehensively shit the movie actually is. It felt like I was watching Casshern all over again which actually made me cry.

Excuse my ignorance (I'm just not 'down with the kids' at all!) but what is a Fansub?

  • TiTaniXNEz #10 6 years ago

When a fan of the movie subtitles it for others. So in this instance, a Japanese speaking person translated it to English text for us "fans".

"Most people saw this way back last year did they not? Subtitled Japanese will be better than an american dub anyway."

I don't even think most people on this website saw it last year, if by most you mean 51% or more. I'm sure the American and Euro release will be bilingual like every anime DVD that gets released.
  • The_Aardvark #13 6 years ago

I've seen it- it was a dreadful movie. Absolute shite. And the translation I had was shite too.
  • Navi #14 6 years ago

I for one really enjoyed the movie. Thought it fitted in nice with the story in the game. Last Order was really good as well (the traditional animated side story they bundled with it in Japan), if a little slight really. Hopefully they will do it for the release here.
  • bink #15 6 years ago

Ahh, Casshern. Rented it at the weekend. Fell asleep within 20 minutes (may have have had something to do with the Pimms no.3). Had to take it back the next day none the wiser as to what the devil it was about.

Still, quite looking forward to Advent Children.
  • Navi #16 6 years ago

I second that. Watched trailer, order from internet, left in corner ever since after 1 viewing. So much potential wasted.
  • ecureuil #17 6 years ago

I thought it was a pretty amazing movie, one that I don't think I'll ever tire of. Up there with my favourite movies of all time.
  • space_ace #18 6 years ago

with this film it's sad to see they aren't even trying. while spirits was fascinating, even if not fully realized.
  • ecureuil #19 6 years ago

Spirits was boring as fuck. They tried to be too artsy, and failed horribly. At least with AC they knew what people wanted - FFVII characters fighting and doing crazy stuff. I loved it. The script probably took them all of 5 minutes to write, but who gives a crap when it's this pretty?
  • BillGaitas #20 6 years ago

ecureuil:"The script probably took them all of 5 minutes to write"

    So true

    @bink

I have Casshern. At the end I still think wtf. Very pretty film, though.

Looking forward to a proper release of Advent Children. I've caught a fansub, but would like a better quality encode, and some behinf the scenes stuff.
  • Daryoon #22 6 years ago

I think you can get away with just watching the final trailer! It contains about 80% of the film's dialogue pretty much!
  • floW #23 6 years ago

EuroPSPmovies.net? I thought this site was about games but there you go.
  • Burnt-Kona Verified Senior Artist, Full Fat Productions #24 6 years ago

Cheers Arbiter. I'll definately seek out a better translation
  • tengu #25 6 years ago

It's a brainless action movie, no doubt about it, but it IS absolutely breathtaking to watch. I can't wait for a proper DVD of it.

"EuroPSPmovies.net? I thought this site was about games but there you go."

Yeah, because it isn't like games sites EVER have news about videogame related movies, IS IT? ffs.

Advent Children Is The Best Graphical Film Yet!!!
  • Fallen_Angel #29 6 years ago

"Advent Children Is The Best Graphical Film Yet!!!"

No, that honour falls to Toy Story.

Saw AC last year. Watched it a few times to try and figure out what the fuck the story was going on about before realising it didn't really matter. Very pretty though.

I personally thought it was excellent. With FFVII being one of my top games of all time then that's what really added to it. It was an absolute treat for the fans of the game, giving us that extraordinary looking film. Sure the plot was silly and... well, silly but it was good fun none the less.

And yeah, Casshern was a bit poo.
  • SeesThroughAll #31 6 years ago

Still waiting for Sin City UMD to come out in Belgium... :(
  • JSX #32 6 years ago

This is easily one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Just complete and absolute tosh.

I can half understand watching an action scene and then skipping onto the next action scene (not that it takes long), but even at that it's such an empty empty shell. Even if it does have really nice cgi.

It is 100% piss poor japanese "fan service". So masturbatory it may as well have been hentai.

I though spirits within was far better. But still crap.

    Square(nix) discovered milking!

Look at all those FF VII related "products", they know FF VII fanatics will buy anything related to that game so they can pull a "Death by Degrees" knowing full well its going to sell ... a lot.

Its sad seeing Square reduced to that role, they were a force of inovation but now ...

... I wonder if they can fit FF VII on the PSP ... I bet Sony would be VERY HAPPY if that was possible ...
  • tengu #34 6 years ago

It is possible, but they won't do it. God knows why... It's the only console left that they'll ever be able to get away with doing a direct port of the game on.
  • groundbeef #35 6 years ago

    ^^^
I believe the rumour is that FFVII will be remade/ported to the DS, not PSP. PSP would be far too high res for the game to be straight ported without looking crap. Also i think the idea is to bury the hatchet between square and ninty because the game was originally meant for N64, yet they had a fight so the game went to PS1 instead.

As a movie, AC was shallow and predictable. Plot was basically a retread of the game all over again. Even the character designs were dissappointing (turks were done well, but the good guys were horrible for some reason... barrett especially). However, it is a nice bit of fan-service CG fluff for those who can't get enough of the game. Nothing more.

"I believe the rumour is that FFVII will be remade/ported to the DS, not PSP"

Doing this would involve starting the whole game from scratch using 2D graphics or something though, surely? Whereas the PSP would only require a simple visual 'clean up' for a port. I really can't see a DS version happening, it would take too much work on Squenix's part. I think this is a bit of 'confusion' coming off the back of the FFIII remake currently in development for the DS.

Ninty and Squenix also buried the hatchet years ago, hence the FF games for the Gamecube and GBA.
