UT2007 on PC first, not PS3

So says Epic producer.

An Epic Games producer has denied claims originating in a US PlayStation magazine that Unreal Tournament 2007 will be a PlayStation 3 launch title. The game will first appear on the PC, he said.

The original claim came to light just before Christmas when copies of US PlayStation Magazine began to circulate. The mag reportedly said that the game would be ready for the launch of Sony's next-generation games console in spring (if indeed it does turn up in spring etc. etc.).

However, speaking in a thread on Atari's community forums on Saturday, producer Jeff Morris (nickname War_Tourist) said the game would be released on "PC first", adding, "We're not scheduled to be a ps3 launch title, not certain where those news sites are getting that from. There will be a pre-release demo (on the PC at least)."

You can expect to see plenty of Unreal Engine 3 content on both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, mind you, with a number of games already confirmed.

Epic's cooperation with Microsoft kind of rules out UT2k7 as a PS3 release title anyway. Doesn't come as a surprise that the rumours are false.

From what I've been reading, the PS3 will have a seriously lacking launch line-up if they go for a Spring release. The architecture, though powerful, is suffering many teething issues. Whereas the PS2 was complete hardware, but difficult to develop on, the PS3 is simply too early in it's development no matter how much support Sony give, and how much easier (potentially) the machine willl be to develop on in the future.

But take that with a pinch of internet salt.

What are you talking about? Epic's whoring itself to anyone and everyone who's prepared to get an Unreal Engine working on their machine. A demo version of the engine comes bundled with the PS3 dev-kit!

We should know a lot more about the PS3 by Thursday hopefully. So far, things with the console seem to be mirroring the run up to the PS2 launch as far as I've seen, right down to the february event set to 'fully unveil' the console.

The ps3 by all acounts has slim to none chance of making a spring launch. And also if Sony are up to their old tricks we here in Europe wont see it for 6+months :(

Let me save certain fanboys some trouble:

"I knew it would happen. See, PS3 suckkksssooorrrss! The only confirmed launch title is not even exclusive! Sony suckkksss!!!!"

On a serious note though, Spring launch seems to be a joke. If it does get launched, forget about having any decent games - if any. So maybe it will lie around for several months as a clunky Blu-Ray player... which rings a bell.
  • Bates #7 6 years ago

That'll only be the Japanese launch though Talha, there'll obviously be more games available come the much later UK launch at the ass end of 2006.

Personally though, considering how strong the PS2's 2006 line up is looking right now, I'm in no hurry for a new console anyway.
  • Talha #8 6 years ago

@Bates: Actually that's what I meant - Spring launch makes me wonder how many games will be available even in Japan. Naturally Euro launch comes much later.

Too bad, I AM in a hurry since I didn't shell out for a 360 and I think upgrading the PC at least in 2006, just to play games, is not that sensible an option.

In other news, man has landed on the moon.

Anyway, if sony is smart, they push back the launch. Get the machine sorted out & get some games for launch. Why? Well, there are alot of gamers who are interested in buying IF they get some games actually worth playing and dont launch this spring (if they bought an xbx, the missus/parents will prolly ban any thought of buying another console for 6-12 months). Ow, and they would score some points if they would make a worldwide launch like ms.

@Xerx3s : I so wish they listen to you - I am getting married in December and can't see how a PS3 will fit into that equation (financially and emotionally and spiritually etc etc etc).

But I think Sony will push for an early launch since they would like to tout the Cell while it still has some advantage over PCs and other processors etc.
  • Blerk #11 6 years ago

Sony may as well just launch as soon as the hardware is ready, because there are a large number of people who will buy a PS3 regardless of whether there are any games worth having or not.

I think we probably will see a Spring launch in Japan, with few machines and a handful of not-very-good titles to go with it. A bit like the Japanese 360 launch, then! :-)

Pure logic, Epic hasn't lost its mind yet.

My (optimistic) prediction for PS3 launch dates is as follows:

    Japan: September
    USA: November
    Europe: March 2007

didnt the ps2 come out in europe only one month after it came out in america?
  • glaeken #15 6 years ago

The PS3 will sell regardless of when they release it and if it actually even has any games worth playing.

I hear so many who really don't have a clue about the hardware side of things dismiss the Xbox360 because the PS3 has 10 times the power. It seems to me the fact Sony have managed to get so many believing this based on so little is a major success for them.

"didnt the ps2 come out in europe only one month after it came out in america?"

Yes, same as the PS1 more or less.
  • tenma #17 6 years ago

Who atually reads PSM expecting legitimate news these days? That mag makes even the most hardcore of Sony fanboys shudder.

    Most likely. -_-

Its no use explaining ppl about GP & FP calculations and stuff. They hear magic marketing buzz words and they close down for facts. And sony is very good in spreading buzz words. This will be the ps2 launch all over again. 10 times the power? 0_o

  • Talha #20 6 years ago

    @Xerx3s : Why thanks. Let's hope she's a gamer too
  • neuroniky #21 6 years ago

@Talha: gratz. I should have got married last November, but in the end it didn't happen. And I'm glad it didn't since I then met this woman who... well, she is just all I've always looked for but thought it was impossible to find. I'm now rescheduling my marriage for 2007. I don't like easy ways :D.

I wouldn't say the PS3 loses impact just because UT20047404532805 isn't going to be a launch title. It'll still look pretty, in fact it may even look prettier as the dev team will have longer to get to grips with the PS3 'style'. They just won't be playing it on launch day in Japan.

Personally, not being Japanese (or expecting to move there any time soon) I don't give a rats arse. Odds are we'll have it for whenever Sony decide that us Europeans are allowed to play with their new toy, only by then it'll be old news :/

Although I suppose UT2020 might be a launch title for us neglected Euro types... ;)
  • IronGiant #23 6 years ago

UT 2k(insert any number) wouldn't exactly make any console fly off the shelves.. now a new Metal Gear, Resident Evil, Gran Turismo will.
  • Talha #24 6 years ago

@neuroniky : Wow, that gives you the time to (i) Buy a PS3 (ii) Buy a revolution (iii) Upgrade your PC for Vista (iv) Probably enjoy a lot of next gen games and software before you get married.

    Clever.
