Mortal Kombat for Wii
Boon for the system.
Super Smash Bros. won't be the only way to stand triumphant over your toppled friends waving the Wii remote control around - Midway's admitted that the next Mortal Kombat will appear on the new Nintendo console too.
GameSpot reports that a spokesperson confirmed Mortal Kombat: Armageddon's arrival on Wii in the first quarter of 2007. It will follow PS2 and Xbox versions, which are due out later this year.
There's no word on what the Wii version will be like, but judging by comments that MK co-creator Ed Boon made earlier this year, it still represents a breakthrough for the developer. In an interview with Game Informer unearthed by 1UP, Boon confessed he didn't know how you'd go about making a beat-'em-up for Wii.
"There's not five or six buttons to give you all of these functions, so maybe they will compensate but tilting one way for blocking or another way for attack. But that is so dramatically different. So it will either be one of the biggest hits in the world or a big failure. I certainly hope it does well," he said of the control issue. Then again, he did say this before E3 and the "classic" controller's unveiling.
Midway is also working on a PSP version called Mortal Kombat: Unchained. Check out our previous coverage for more on both.

uhm shouldn't this article be published back then? (maybe it has been but i don't remember) I see this a lot lately in gaming sites; uncovering interviews and such since E3. Aren't these news, (in general not EG), a bit stale, or is there some kind of agreement to not tell until a certain date?
cheers

Oh look, I lied. It's not nearly as good as Spore. However, in other news: Spore.

NEARLY EVERY decent 360 game so far has just been a souped up conversion from the xbox/ps2 version.
What's the problem?

Armageddon seems like Trilogy was, a collection of everyone with a thinly disguised plot, only now with added "Make-your-own-fighter" mode. Which is usually generic and boring but I wouldn't put anything past MK these days.
It could turn out great on the Wii - or it could end up shite. Time will tell, but to be perfectly honest - I wouldn't rock the boat with the fighters just yet, and use good ol' joypad goodness instead of wii-mote love.

It's easy to imagine a beat-em-up that uses only the accelerometer and a couple of buttons to give intuitive and responsive control...but for me at least, it's hard to nail down any workable specifics. I hope they save that kind of thing for second-wave experimentation.

I see this no different than the xbox ports the 360 is currently getting.

What does the "classic" controller look like? Is it the Gamecube controller?

At least there was 7 on the last pic I saw of it. It'd mean the dpad doubling as 4 buttons but ont he N64 the 4 C buttons doubled as a D pad so.....
Honestly I can't understand why developers should have any trouble thinking up control schemes for Wii games. Do any of them ever think of mapping actions to buttons or do they just copy what someone else did before them.
Still maybe that expllains things like the trick moves in the old Fifa N64 games. 2 of 'em were possible but the rest you needed 4 fingers.
