Former Rare man Martin Hollis is to speak for the first time in public about the development of cherished N64 FPS GoldenEye 007 at the forthcoming European Developers' Forum this September.
Although the event is trade-only, Hollis' decision to open up about the much celebrated film licence is bound to attract a lot of press attention, as he focuses on how the game came together, and the lessons he learned and applied in the creation of subsequent titles - including his current charge, Funkydilla, which is in development at his Cambridge-based game studio Zoonami for multiple formats.
According to the Forum's organisers, much of the session entitled 'The Making of GoldenEye 007' "will be about the game's creation," and "will touch on his experiences since quitting Rare and setting up Cambridge-based developer Zoonami, and focus on ways in which game creators can excel in design and gameplay".
In a statement, Hollis said his aim was "to help others through my own experience". "And as this is the first time I have ever discussed the development of GoldenEye 007 in such a public forum, I hope to offer delegates inspiration and advice which will result in better games from us all."
Whatever happens, with seven years past since the game was released, and millions of fans worldwide who still use it as a yardstick for both console FPS titles and film licences, he's bound to offer the likes of us some headlines.
The European Developers' Forum is organised by The Independent Game Developers' Association (TIGA) and runs from September 1st to 3rd as part of the European Games Network/Game Stars Live event cluster at ExCeL in London's Docklands area.
