Play.com wants £400 for 360

MS says it's pure speculation.

Following the appearance of a listing for the Xbox 360 on Play.com - complete with a price tag of £399 and a launch date of November 29 - Microsoft has told Eurogamer that it's all mere guesswork on Play's part.

"The stories currently running on some retail sites regarding Xbox 360 launch price, launch timings and launch line up are pure speculation," said a representative. "We have not yet announced any specific launch details."

The listing has changed a little since yesterday - and no doubt since Microsoft got wind of it. The November 29 date has now disappeared from view, and a disclaimer has been added to the page: "The UK price and release date have not been confirmed and are subject to change.

"If the retail price is decreased you will receive the lower price," says Play.

There's still a full list of games up though, priced at £39.99 a pop - apparently saving you a tenner off the RRP. Call of Duty 2 is billed as the top seller, followed by Project Gotham 360 and Quake 4.

"Stay tuned for more information," Microsoft told us. Will do.

ffs, how much free advertising has play.com got because this non-news has been reported everywhere?

They are just hedging there bets.

If someone pre-orders at a given price, Play promise to sell at that price even if it comes out higher, but they also promise to let you have it at the actual price if it turns out to be lower. By setting their pre-order price at £400 they are %100 confident that they won't be having to let anybody have it for less than the actual launch price.

Really think the 360 will cost more than 400 knicker?

    Oh, sorry. misread your post.

" If the retail price is decreased you will receive the lower price."

Thats a fantastic offer. There is no way it'll come out at £400, so the retail price will have decreased, and if it comes out at say £200, you receive £200! Possibly and Xbox 360 as well, but even if you don't you'll have enough money to go out and buy one.

Terminal terror, what are you talking about ?

You won't get any money back as they don't 'take' your money until they actually process and ship the order, you'll just potentially have less money taken at that point than the £400 you are agreeing to pay up to.

Good lord, £50 for one game! That would be like 8 Xbox games in the current amazon summer sale.

But being amazon, you'd have to pay 50 quid postage for each :-P

What shitty news. Why put this up. Its all guess work by retail. Think before you post eurogamer!
  • RobertFoster #11 7 years ago

Wow, more up-to-date news from EG.

    "Why put this up."

Why post a comment asking why news was posted?

Surely the article exists to tell people that the play.com price is probably not the real one, to ease any panic?

Speaking of Play, is anyone else having delivery problems? RE4 was posted a week ago and still hasn't arrived, and my step-dad was complaining about similar issues himself a couple of weeks ago...

Don't use play anymore after 9 orders went missing/didn't turn up. Then they said they could only send three at a time. I have never had a problem with amazon so the £50:00 p&p must be worth it :-)

I tried to tell play about the problem but they didn't care. Don't know if it was my postie or someone at play but order after order dind't turn up. Even when I changed my delivery address. Their loss = Amazons gain.

    Play.com wants £400 for 360.
That's because it's not using the metric system. Elsewhere in Europe is 360€ of course.

here is a piracy - price point idea.

if M$ and sony are confident in thier anti-piracy abilities in the new consoles, why is the price of the games so high. no piracy should equal more sales (that is if second hand sales and rentals are not included) so the high price of development should be off set by higher number of unit sales. that is of course if the excuse of piracy costs them real money is true. how many games bought from the car boot sale would really have been bought from a shop.

i doubt I will be buying games on the day of release at those prices. i will wait for the discount and continue to rent - I mean £15 a month for as many games as you can play, excellent value.

And the price set for the console is just a publicity thing and a way to get your deposits as early as possible. Would M$ be stupid enough to sell a default system for £400 or even £299? we will see. they made the mistake one of over priceing.
