Halo 2 maps now free

For you to download.

Good news for all those cheapskates who declined to shell out for the Halo 2 Multiplayer Map Pack - all the maps are now available to download free of charge via Xbox Live.

Which means you can now get Relic, Elongation, Terminal, Backwash and Gemini in addition to the previously released maps for no money at all - just go online and choose the content download option from the game's menu.

And please note: "Be sure to download all of the Halo 2 maps if you haven't already or you will be unable to play in matchmaking once the playlist update is released next week," reads a message on Bungie's website.

So there you have it.

Yeah that just means people who actually shelled out cash for them will probably feel fairly bitter about it, unless they really desperately wanted them.

"Yeah that just means people who actually shelled out cash for them will probably feel fairly bitter about it"

Why should they? They all knew the maps were going to be free this August/September.

Those who couldn't wait, paid for the new maps. I waited, and now they're free.

sold my "online" xbox to put money towards the x360 so i will have to wait until end of november to play them.......pisses me off that i had to wait and then just as i sell they are free.

I LOVE HALO 2. wouldn't it be a shame, if not ironic, if I played Halo 2 more than Ghost Recon 3 and PGR3.

I 'shelled out for them' and don't feel bitter. they were cheap.

Looking forward to the playlist update next week

A lot of the hardcore Halo 2 players bought the maps because they wanted to have some new areas to play on, everybody knew they would be free end of august.

I believe in supporting a developer by buying good content/games/support. In the end Bungie offered best of both worlds... good content early to willing, paying customers and free stuff for the not-so-hardcore fans and the cheapskates.

    > Halo2 is great fun in multiplayer, I miss it. Softmodded boxes definitely don't work on live right?

You *might* be ok if you have NO hacked content for Halo 2 on your HD...

i can see free content being very few and far between on the x360 so get used to it. THe more i think about it the more I see that the xbox was a test project for M$. lets hope we dont get ripped too much.

Why should they have been free in the first place? Someone has to get paid to make them, so where does that money come from?

You could probably cover the cost from the profits of the initial game release, but to demand that a company should give away some of its profits is a little bizarre. There is no such things as a free lunch, as the old adage goes.

    Spot on Dizzy.

Plus £5.99 wasn't exactly going to break the bank, was it?

This "free map day" (as advertised on bungie's site) started around 23:30 here in the GMT+2 time zone. Frustrating...

Otherwise I have no problem with this 2-phase content distribution model.

I bought the maps early and shared the costs with others (less then a euro for each person). Its good value for money if you do it like that.

Saw someone buy the retail jobbie the other day, chuckled to myself.

Yes, they paid to be beta testers. ;)

why? there are extras on that disc, numbnutz.
  • Tellute #14 7 years ago

I bought the map pack, passed it arround the clan at the cost of a pint.

So for £15 I got wasted on a night out and have the disk ready to install onto the 360.

Didn't seem a bad deal to me, well aprt from the hangover.

"Why should they have been free in the first place? Someone has to get paid to make them, so where does that money come from?"

i agree, because bungie didn't make nearly enough money as it is on the game itself!

The new maps were a good idea, but I would have preferred for them be have worked on a proper ending for the game rather then online content that should have been included from the start.

The chances are the 360 Halo game will be a great improvement, this time I would like the game to have a good single play aswell as online options, I love Live, as much, it not more than the next man, but it's not worth trashing a great story for a new map or two.

Its a good idea. I only play Halo2 from time to time, maybe 3 times a month. I didnt buy the maps because for 3 games a month I didnt feel it worth it.
But for those guy/gals who play ever night, I'm sure they wanted the maps right away and the small cost was worth it, or they wouldnt have payed.
