UT2007 re-dated

The clue's in the title.

Midway has confirmed that Unreal Tournament 2007 is due out in, er, 2007.

Speaking to GameSpot, the publisher admitted that while the hotly tipped first-person shooter has been variously stuck with "2006" and then "winter 2006" targets, Midway currently expects it to come out "in the first half of 2007".

That certainly seems to put to death any lingering rumours that the PlayStation 3 version will make it out alongside the console on November 17th. Although who knows, since apparently the next-gen versions "have yet to be tagged with an exact ship date".

Midway's also coy about the possibility of an Xbox 360 version. Originally the publisher said it planned to release on PC, PS3 and 360, but it's walked back the sentiment recently and now refuses to confirm the 360 version's existence.

Whatever the story, the key fact is that Unreal Tournament 2007 won't be with us until the name suggests it's appropriate. Although those with an Epic Games fixation can always check out Gears of War instead, since that's due out on Xbox 360 this year.

On a related note, we're still waiting to find out what that "big announcement" Epic's Mark Rein notified his forum about is, but it's expected this week. Stay tuned then.

That'll be a problem for Midway. I'm sure they'd like to change the name to Unreal Tournament 2008, if it weren't for all the hype they've delivered already.

WTF is a game with 2007 in the title coming out in 2007 for?
  • Rambaldi #5 6 years ago

So, the 360, the console with the biggest and most hardcore 1st person fraternity and they're considering whether or not to actually release UT for it?

/sends someone round to give them a slap

    LOL @ Rambaldi!

Oh look another delayed "biggy" PC game. Now there's a surprise, eh? /wink

Man, if only they'd gone 'episodic' we'd be on UT2025 by now... ;)

I didn't like UT on XBOX so I probably won't like it on 360 either as I couldn't double-dodge comfortably with the joypad. In this game I think keyboard and mouse combo FTW!

Double jump would've been fine if it worked like the PC: just double tap laft or right on the thumbstick instead of the trite that they came up with.

I guess that's what you get when you hire a bunch of PC gaming nerds to code a console game ;)

@rare: UT isn't out for Xbox, you mean UC... completely different animal.

I was a big fan of UT on the PC, but when the first version came out for the Xbox I heard a lot about framerate issues and so I never tried the game.

Were the later version(s) better? (something like $5.00 used at the shops here).

I bet they are regretting signing the timed exclusive now.

Here's a snippet of a conversation I had on a contract a few months ago.

Developer: "The sony manuals say the cell can perform many simultaneous tasks"
Me: "How does that fit into the logic for the engine"
    Developer: "What do you mean"
Me: "Well the physics get calculated then we need to apply the new co-ordinates to all the affected object but, we do that in sequence not parallel"
Developer : "But we can load other areas while this is going on"
Me: "Yea that's what Halo did back in the early xbox days"
    Developer: "Cell rocks"
    Me: "Shut up you muppet!"

We both laughed alot that day

I can't wait for the Xbox 360 version of Unreal 2007. I am very happy that Midway CEO, David Zucker, made it clear that the Xbox 360 will receive a version of this game that Midway will be publishing. The new announcement makes me wonder if there will be in fact be a Playstation 3 version of Unreal Tournament 2007. It wouldn't surprise me if Unreal Tournament 2007 ended up cancelled on the Playstation 3, just like WWE Smackdown vs Raw and so many other popular games.
