Matrix Online shrinks News

PC MMO News by Corey Brotherson

1 August, 2005

The Matrix Online has taken yet another misfortunate turn after critical beatings and commercial indifference – its online gameworld has now shrunk by two-thirds.

Instead of its original nine worlds, administrators of the MMORPG have reduced The Matrix Online to three due to much of its population 'jacking out', leaving many of the game areas sparse, according to the official site.

The website says: "Recently, members of the community have noted that it can be difficult to find other players in The Matrix: Mega City. The current level of population density can limit opportunities for socializing with other players which are such a key part of our worlds. On August 2nd, 2005, we will be merging the nine current worlds into three new worlds. This merge should help to increase the number of players on any world at any given time."

From the three worlds, one will be specifically Hostile, with the others running under normal rules. There will also be three new characters slots on each world to transfer existing avatars, or create new ones. Further to this, players will also be able to earn extra experience and currency for a limited time, to compensate for the sudden downgrading. Neo am cry.

The Matrix was a fluke, proven time again by more terrible films and terrible games.

I'm not shocked. I beta tested MxO and found that human interraction was thin on the ground in all but the primary game world.

The game isn't as bad as a lot of people will claim - but it's no World of Warcraft either.

It's the nature of the beast, for popular MMORPGs to become more popular, and all the others to fade into obscurity.

I played the beta, and it was the buggiest, laggiest beta of any mmorpg i've ever played. This was a possible rival to WoW... once - now it is dying, like a fish, flopping sadly around, not realising that it is no longer in water....

Being ganked by people shooting at you while you're locked into H-H combat with someone else is a poor design decision. It didn't happen in the movies, it shouldn't happen in the game.

Note to developers:

Don't try and base your projects on woeful out-of-date (and never very good in the first place) IP

I only meant possible rival to WoW in branding alone, really, i thought if they captured some element of the (first) film, and actually gave you fluid gunplay combined with kung fu, with a mechanic to balance the 2, it could have been something different, more of an alternative, if you will.

"Its selling for £2.99 on Play.com. That says it all."

It might be cheap but once you have installed the game you will have to install a patch around the size of 1.25GB But its probably a much bigger download size now.

I understand needing to download a patch once you've bought a MMO but 1.25gb patch for a newly released MMO was laughable.
