PAL Shadow extras confirmed

Plus: play it projected 16m-wide onto a building near you.

Sony has announced its plans to herald the European release of Shadow of the Colossus on February 17th.

That date also marks the re-release of the same team's previous game ICO, which received an incredibly limited run when it first came out over here.

Shadow's PAL packaging will adopt a similar approach to the limited edition ICO pack of several years ago, shipping with a postcard set featuring still images of iconic scenes from the game.

What's more, there'll also be some extra content on the disc - interviews with creative directors Fumito Ueda and Kenji Kaido, unseen concept sketches and in-game stills, and the original trailer for ICO. Which you all totally have to buy this time okay?

The official site will also run a competition asking people to design their own colossus, with the winner hand-chosen by Ueda and in for a "once in a lifetime trip for two to a surprise destination".

On top of all that, SCEUK is going to be doing nationwide promos using building projection tech so that people can play Shadow on 16-metre-wide projection.

For more on Shadow, best check out our game page, which is overflowing with info. We'll be bringing you fresh takes on both it and ICO closer to Feb 17th.

It's a smashing PAL conversion too. Everyone else should take note.

February will be an extraordinary month for PAL land with ICO, SotC, Katamari and Psychonauts.

Clicking on that link, I was half dreading that they'd be releasing Shadow the Hedgehog again.

    Phew.
  • reality_cheque #6 6 years ago

@LeDil: I've been having the same idea, as it looks like I won't have a PS3 for about 3 years... there are too many good PS2 games out since mine started making horrible noises and thus got relegated to the dustbin.

Annoyingly I'm supposed to be saving towards a deposit on a house :(

Cool, I love Shadow the Hedgehog!

YEEES the heard my prayings!!! damn i was so desperately hoping they'd put the same effort into schadow as they did with ico limited... thanks sony, finally you're showing some care! i just hope they reedit the game as well while soing the PAL-conversion and remove the HUD from the game! seriously, i don't want and there is no need fo an icon on the screen, in game as beautiful as this, telling me i'm equiped with a sword or a bow when i can perfectly see that fact 'caus my carachter is holding it!

Really? Ouch. The effect those ads had on my PC was the reason I installed it in the first place. Try adding http://195.157.98.219/* manually.

LeDil: I'm not 100% sure you'll like this game considering you loved all the xbox 360 titles.

I'm almost 100% sure that this was uncalled for... at least without a emoticon at the end ;)

    awesome
    with one exception
    no frame rate optimization? :-|
the only thing that trips this otherwise giant game

The game is actually getting promoted? Finally a trully original game will get the sales it deserves.

Did it get promoted in USA too?

I think Sony just feel guilty after they let Ico tank, so they're putting some effort in this time. That way, when SotC inevitably sells nine copies here in the UK, at least they can say they tried.
  • jozz #14 6 years ago

"Woo another PS2 must have :o)

/with high quality titles like Shadow, who needs a 360. I can wait until the PS3 arrives ;o) "

Are you being paid to post that by evil marketing types?
    It looks like it ;P

SoTC has had so much atmosphere, good and bad (but mostly good) about it, that the only way I'm going to decide whether I like it or not is to buy it for myself.....which I will, uumm yes.

BTW- Would people who've played ICO honestly say it would be enjoyable for someone who passed up on it last time, or does it look and feel abit dated now.
No Rose tinted glasses on this please, as It's my money on the line here GOD DAMN IT!!

  • itamae #15 6 years ago

Ico is beautiful because of its overall graphical design, the use of light and shadows and some really breathtaking vistas. It isn't as technically advanced as, say, God of War, but it definitely doesn't look dated either.
  • Blerk #16 6 years ago

I replayed the Ico demo the other day while trying the SotC one and it's still just as beautiful as I remember it.
  • rinoaMW #17 6 years ago

"Which you all totally have to buy this time okay?"

    yes - buy buy buy!

if each of us buys 10 copies each, then that should make up for the lack of interest last time :)

plus you'll have a few copies to sell if it becomes a rare buy like the last one ;)

To be perfectly honest though Shadow of the Collosus is a lot easier to promote than ICO. You can just show a few clips of the stunning Collossi and it is quite easy to summarise in a marketing sense "You run about an epic landscape and kill giants". ICO is a bit trickier to do, but hopefully that'll be more of a point of sale thing where when you try and buy Shadow in GAME, they pimp ICO.

Surely you'd still need a grip meter though?

At last, after more than 4 years after it's debut, Ico will be getting the release and (hopefully) publicity it deserves. I played through it again last month. It's such an amazing game; it's an experience unlike anything else out there (except, now, for SotC). I just hope people realise this and the sales figures are as high as they deserve to be.

Also played a demo of SotC last night. Frickin' awesome!! Even just riding Agro (a great character by the way, with gorgeous animation and personality) around the vast plains and gawping at the sights is comparable to pretty much any other great gaming moment I have experienced.

Long live the Ico team :)

PS - does anyone actually know if they have a proper 'team name'?
  • Blerk #22 6 years ago

    Does it have 60hz?

It has 60hz, Widescreen and progressive scan.
  • Killerbee #23 6 years ago

Excellent. I already have my copy on pre-order. It should go perfectly next to my cardboard-box copy of ICO. :)
  • Daikon #24 6 years ago

Seriously. If you don't have a PS2 yet: this is THE reason to get one. Bloody amazing game.
  • Blerk #25 6 years ago

I dunno... this time you can smell the hype. Maybe there'll be a fair few 'I have to buy it because it's what everyone is talking about' sales?

/expects to find pre-owned shelves full of copies two days later

    Edit: Y'know - like Fahrenheit. :-)

Fareneheit was damn mear impossible to get second hand around Christmas. All the major GAME and Gamestation shops didn't have it until I found it in Gamestation at Manchester (and that was only one copy).
  • admir #27 6 years ago

    what about the USA
  • Blerk #28 6 years ago

Ico isn't widescreen, no. It does have a 60hz mode, though.
  • Concept #29 6 years ago

That's one thing I wish the team had done (not likely for a re-release and the fact they were handing the European localisation themselves).

ICO in wide-screen and at the same resolution of Colossus.

The latest issue of OPSM2 (otherwise known as demo disc fodder) stated in their review boxout that the re-release of ICO was widescreen. I suspect this is an error though.
