Assassin's Creed for 360, PC

Like you weren't expecting it?

It might be the least surprising announcement of the day, but it's still never-the-less exciting. Assassin's Creed is coming to Xbox 360 and PC.

Originally touted as a PS3-only title, publisher Ubisoft has announced the Xbox 360 version will arrive at the same time as the PS3 title, while the US division of the publisher confirmed to GameSpot that the title would grace the PC at some point in the future.

Set in 1191 AD during the Crusades, Assassin's Creed promises plenty of medieval stealth action with what looks like some of the nicest visuals on the next-gen systems.

Oh, and it's being developed by the team behind Prince of Persia and Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, which is enough for us to rub our collective chins in respect.

Ubisoft is confident about it too. "With Assassin's Creed we're introducing a franchise that will establish itself as the must-have next-generation game for the next-generation gamer," said Serge Hascoet when talking about next-generation games in the next-generation.

"Early 2007", is the date being bandied about by Ubisoft as a release date. Although that's not really a date, just a vague period of time.

It does seem like the the significant PS3 console exclusives will be coming from Japan,

Does the average western gamer care enough about Gran turismo, DMC, and MGS to give Sony its usual exclusive clout?

Oh and of course there's Killzone, but given the first one was rather meh, It'll take more than a plush video to persuade me.

    Kill-what?

Sorry, just didn't see it at E3 this year.
Bye bye all non-nintendo IP exclusives.
  • dudefella #10 6 years ago

If the PS3 wasn't so horribly unappealing, MGS4 would be enough to make me get one. As it stands, however...
  • effinwooly #11 6 years ago

    Why would anyone buy a PS3 ? Seriously ?
  • Foxclose #12 6 years ago

"Does the average western gamer care enough about Gran turismo, DMC, and MGS to give Sony its usual exclusive clout?"

They are great AAA titles. But unfortunately, the dumb casual public are more interested in a crap Fifa titles or an average title like GTA.
  • Inquisitor #13 6 years ago

Bye bye all non-nintendo exclusives? Thats ridiculous, we still have Fable, forza, halo, gears, final fantasy, dmc, resistance, mgs 4 and plenty others.

What is their on the wii, oh yes, mario, zelda (doesn't really count if its on gc aswell), metroid and some crappy mini games, wow!
  • mike_mgoblue #14 6 years ago

    Rhinoxious,

You did a nice job of writing an article, but you listed Devil May Cry 4 as a Playstation 3 exclusive...and that is almost certainly not going to be true, especially due to the high sales of Dead Rising for the Xbox 360. Capcom originally expected Dead Rising to sell 600,000 copies worldwide, but in less than two weeks, Dead Rising has already sold over 500,000 copies in North America! The game has not even been released in Europe or the rest of the world! Capcom says that they now expect Dead Rising to sell over ONE-MILLION copies, which means that it will have outsold Resident Evil 4 when it was released for the PS2 and Gamecube.

I don't know if you saw the articles about the high sales of Dead Rising influencing Capcom of America to show Capcom of Japan a program that involves the Capcom Corporation never again releasing a game exclusively for the Playstation 3, but that is in fact what Capcom of America is in the process of doing at this point in time. According to the current plan of action that Capcom of America is showing to Capcom of Japan, all Playstation 3 games will automatically be released in a multi-platform way. You can read about that here: next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_con tent&task=view&id=3658&Itemid=2

In that article, it specifically talks about how there is a very strong chance that Devil May Cry 4 and Monster Hunter will be released for the Xbox 360 at the same time they are released for the Playstation 3. The plan Next-Generation is referring to in the article specifically says that games like Lost Planet and Dead Rising, along with any other new intellectual franchise games, will be released exclusively for the Xbox 360; however, all games released for the Playstation 3 will automatically be multi-platform, due to the much higher financial risk that occurs when releasing an expensive game on a system that is difficult to develop games for, and has a much lower installed base of users than the Xbox 360.

Sony doesn't give any sort of benefit to third-party companies that release games exclusively for the Playstation 3; those companies still have to pay Sony the same level of licensing and royalty fees that they normally would. But Microsoft uses a revolutionary new strategy; they charge virtually no licensing or royalty fee to a third-party game company if they release a game exclusively for the Xbox 360. This is the reason why Capcom wants to continue releasing games exclusively for the Xbox 360, but they want all games to automatically be multi-platform for the Playstation 3.

Also, there are a huge number of reliable websites, magazines, and industry analysts that say Metal Gear Solid 4 is also going to be released for the Xbox 360. Metal Gear Solid 4 isn't scheduled to be released until the fall of 2007, so Konami would have no problem adding the Xbox 360 production in a way that would still allow it to be released on the same day as the PS3 version.

One more thing: The Playstation 3 version of Gran Turismo, which was shown at the 2006 E3, was such a HUGE disappointment to the audience that you could literally hear a pin drop in the room. Sony's Phil Harrison LITERALLY had to ask the audience to clap for the developers of the game...but nobody did!!! Gran Turismo isn't anything special...games like Forza Motorsport for the Xbox 360 are the games that people are looking forward to the most, and Project Gotham Racing continues to be an Xbox 360 best-seller.

I honestly can't believe that people say, "I am buying the Playstation 3 because it has a lot of Role Playing Games, like the two Final Fantasy XIII games." My only response to that is the fact that those games are currently not scheduled to be released until sometime in 2008. Also, no Final Fantasy game has EVER been released on time; there is an excellent chance those games will see AT LEAST one delay. The Playstation 3 will probably have dropped its price by 2008, so that would be a much better time to consider purchasing one, because that is when games like Final Fantasy XIII and Metal Gear Solid 4 will be released.

One final thought: The overwhelming majority of industry analysts say that Microsoft dominated the 2006 E3, in terms of both software and the way that Microsoft brought the show home to people with Xbox Live video downloads and game demos that could be downloaded and played. Industry analysts also say that Microsoft dominated the European Game Convention in Leipzig, German, this month. Especially with the announcement that the only place that European gamers will be able to play a next-generation Soccer game in high-definition video with 5.1 digital sound is on the Xbox 360, because BOTH Soccer games are EXCLUSIVE to the Xbox 360 in Europe for the next TWELVE MONTHS!!!

There is no doubt that the Microsoft X06 Trade Show is going to be awesome, because Microsoft is going to save a lot of surprises for that one. Microsoft will also be bringing it home to gamers on Xbox Live, just like they did the E3.

But I am really looking forward to the Tokyo Game Show, because that is where Microsoft will announce the "Relaunch" of the Japanese Xbox 360. Japanese gamers are really looking forward to Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey; they are both Role Playing Games created by legendary people who played key roles in the development of previous Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games. Square Enix also will be showing off a brand new Role Playing game series that previously had no name, and it will be exclusive to the Xbox 360, just like Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey.

I think it would be AWESOME if even more Playstation 3 games that were previously announced as exclusived to the Playstation 3 were now announced for the Xbox 360. For example, if a game like Full Auto 2 that was previously announced as a Playstation 3 exclusive were announced for the Xbox 360, it would be a very important announcement that would cause even more games to forget about their previously announced "exclusive" status. I wouldn't be surprised if that happens a lot at the Tokyo Game Show.
  • mike_mgoblue #15 6 years ago

Assassins Creed; the game that was voted Best Playstation 3 Game at the 2006 Electronic Entertainment Expo is now OFFICIALLY being released for the Xbox 360 the same day as the Playstation 3 version!!!

You can read about that Same Day Release and cool facts at these websites:

    gamespot.com/ne ws/6156938.html

    xbo x360.ign.com/articles/729/729877p1.html

    xbo x360.ign.com/articles/617/617951p1.html

This is not a surprise, though, because the game was officially shown for the first time at the Microsoft X05 Trade Show, when Microsoft's Peter Moore said it would be released for the Xbox 360. At the time, the game was called Project Assassins. I don't think it is a coincidence that this information has "suddenly" been officially announced this month. This is the month that the Microsoft X06 Trade Show will take place. I would be willing to bet that the Microsoft Xbox 360 version of Assassins Creed has all sorts of exclusive special features and bonus content that will not be included in the Playstation 3 or PC versions, just like the situation with Grand Theft Auto 4.

At the 2006 E3, many people saw Assassins Creed for the Playstation 3, but they were surprised to see that it was apparently running on an Xbox 360, which was VERY poorly hidden under a table with a tablecloth. Many people said that the reason why the Xbox 360 version was shown was because the Playstation 3 version didn’t look as good, and would have made a poor demo. Other people originally said that this was not true, and they believed the game was in fact running on a Playstation 3, simply because the game was only announced for the Playstation 3 at the time. However, now that the game has been officially confirmed for the Xbox 360, it now makes perfect sense that the game was probably running on the Xbox 360 at the 2006 E3, even though it was being displayed as a Playstation 3 game.

You know, this is YET ANOTHER game for the Playstation 3 that was originally announced as a Playstation 3 exclusive game, but will now be on the Xbox 360. The overwhelming majority of industry analysts say that Microsoft dominated the E3 Trade Show, especially the way they brought it home to the people with videos and demos using Xbox Live. Industry analysts also have made it clear that Microsoft dominated the Game Convention in Leipzig Germany this month, mainly with their official announcement that the only place European gamers will be able to play next-generation Soccer games in high-definition video with 5.1 digital sound for the next TWELVE-MONTHS is on the Xbox 360!!!

Microsoft always saves a HUGE number of great surprises for the Trade Shows that they host, which is why I am looking forward to the X06 Trade Show this month; it takes place right after the Tokyo Game Show. Microsoft will be bringing it home to gamers with demos and videos, just like they did the 2006 E3. I can’t wait to see what the X06 Trade Show will be like this year.

Microsoft had been talking about the "relaunch" of the Xbox 360 in Japan, and the Tokyo Game Show is the perfect place to put that plan into action. Two of the games that Japanese gamers are looking forward to the most are Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey, from the creators of Final Fantasy. Plus, Square Enix also has a new role-playing game series that will be developed exclusively for the Xbox 360. That new series hasn't been given an official name yet, but I bet we will find out what it is at the Tokyo Game Show this month.

This is a GREAT TIME to be the owner of an Xbox 360 with SO MANY fun games!!! Well, I am off to jump into a Mega Man suit and rip some intestines out of zombies in Dead Rising!!!

Name one game of worth on PS3 that warrants the price tag. You have nothing so go buy your £425 paper weight, all your best games are going to 360 and 360 still has tons more exclusives that you don't get on PS3.

Pro evo 6, Fifa 07, Gears of war, mass effect, Forza 2, viva pinata, Alan wake, huxley, Too human, Halo 3, Fable 2, Lost planet, Dead rising, Saints row, Project offset, Splinter cell double agent.

PS3 is now a joke, and no one wants that piece of shit under there TV.
  • Fatnick #31 6 years ago

"Does the average western gamer care enough about Gran turismo?"

Yes! Isn't it wone of th best selling series of all time? The only way that could possiblty change if MS get/market Forza right.

  • Rash' #33 6 years ago

    PS3lol,

Boy do you know how to jump the gun. I'm getting a Ps3 so I feel inclined to respond to your BS. The games to get PS3 for: Heavenly Sword, MGS4, Pro Evo 7, Lair, Killzone 2, God of War 3, Resistance, Final Fantasy, Motorstorm, Unreal Tournment 2007, DMC... You get the idea. And the system isn't in full swing yet. Additional it will play my DVD collection until I pick up my HDTV and then High Def movies for me! Now like a desperate 360 owner starved of good games you're going to tell how many of the games I've mention will come to 360. You know what I call that? Sad.

These are the defnition of exclusive as well, no PC ports, no next gen exclusive nonesenes stone cold hard PS3 exclusives, which is probably a bigger exclusive list than MS's since launch plus anticipated titles and the PS3 is not even launched plus Sony is announcing even more new titles at TGS.

No they don't warrant a £425 price tag but they probably hit a niche market to the people it would.

I find is wierd that it took Ubi so long to announce the Xbox 360 and PC versions especially that it's launching the same time as PS3 version it's like EA only announcing Fifa for the Xbox 360 and then a week before release they announce the PS2, Xbox, PC, PSP and DS versions... what gives?

  • PS3lol #47 6 years ago

So why are you buying that PS3 again?. It's a $600 console with no good reason to buy it in November. The PS3 is going to be the biggest train wreck in gaming history. If you buy one YOU WILL regret it within 12 months when it flops harder than a Atari Jaguar.

You have been warned. Either buy a Xbox 360 or waste £425 on a console with no good games that will be in the bargain bucket this time next year.
  • Steroyd #48 6 years ago

Why are you so sure the PS3 will flop?

    A) The Jaguar was a pretty good console, the first to actually have system link iirc (correct me if I'm wrong).
    B) The PS3 will sell out on day one and in a couple of months it will have some pretty good games. Apart from the price (that will drop in time obviously), I don't see why ppl should regret buying it.
    C) Pot & Kettle.

What I don't understand is the people making assumptions one way or another having not played, let alone read a review of, a single game.

I'm an Xbox owner, but nothing yet has made me too excited about the 360. Consequently I probably won't buy one for a while yet. Likewise, the PS3 hasn't shown anything more than the 360 as of yet. However I won't rule out getting either console in the future as I know the best is yet to come in both cases.

This blind faith and devotion to a company that simply wants to make money out of you is beyond me.
  • PS3lol #54 6 years ago

How many more nails do you want bashed into PS3s coffin before you will accept that it's dead.

First GTA4 goes to Xbox 360 on day one

    PS3 priced at £425/$600

No rumble, lame Wii rip off controller.

Pro evo 6 and Fifa 07 are next gen 360 exclusives.

Assasins creed goes to 360, robbing PS3 of its only interesting next gen exclusive that will be out within the next 12 months.

Gears of war released same day as PS3 in Europe

Wii released at same time with far better launch games than PS3 for a 1/3 of the price.

PS3 graphics shown are no better than Xbox 360

Blu-ray getting beaten by HD DVD in all reviews, Blu-ray movies to cost $40 each

That's a awful lot of nails in the PS3s coffin, it ain't getting out, its funeral is on 17th November, I'm sure all Eurogamer PS3 fanboys will be mourning. Everyone else will be playing Gears of war and Zelda Twilight princess.

"What benefit would either a sony/MS fanboy get from either the 360 or PS3 failing miserably? "

I assume they believe that any game which was due out for the 'loosing' console would be transferred over to theirs. So y'know, better games selection an all that.

But both Sony and MS have shown some telltale signs of what would happen if either gained total market dominance and frankly, neither is a pretty picture.

Like someone said earlier (not sure who it was), I am also a bit stumped why it took so long for Ubi to formally announce this when the 360 version was already clearly in development .....

Oh well, guess there was a good reason.

For me personally, one less reason to want a PS3, although I could still be persuaded by some of the other titles. Really not sure yet.
  • SlackMaster #62 6 years ago

It's been known for a long time that Assassins Creed will be multiformat just not confirmed officially. Personally I'm pleased as although I've only seen the FMV the concept of the game sounds interesting, plus I like the Thief games which are a little similar.

Anyway I don't want either console to fail, although I don't see how they can keep the £425 price up for long which is why I'll not be an early adopter.

"These are the defnition of exclusive as well"

Not true. Full Auto 2, at least, has been confirmed for the 360. Although that certainly isn't among the most eagerly-awaited of those titles.

"But both Sony and MS have shown some telltale signs of what would happen if either gained total market dominance and frankly, neither is a pretty picture."

you can add Nintendo to that list to. Price fixing a-go-go!
  • miiiguel #64 6 years ago

I'm a 360 owner, but I do not discard the option of buying a PS3 if it prooves to deserve my HARD earned money.
What I fail to understand is how you "Sony only" gamers (it could be "MS only", but how things went, it's not), can wait, and wait, and wait, and eat some BS while waiting...

I am not "loyal" to any brand, I find it very stupid, what I do want is to have the best ludic times with my friends and family, and still be able to feed myself, and the ones to (hopefully) come.

I asked this same question in a "Sony freaks only" site, and some kid on K, told me:
"It's a satanic drug thing, you wouldn't understand it".
    Perhaps he's right.

Miiiguel good post there. All this brand loyalty crap is utterly rediculous, you have nothing to gain from it,so why bother?
Saying that,Assassin's Creed was one of the potential 'exclusive' biggies for the PS3,and for me was making the PS3 seem like a more attractive purchase at some point next year ,but now that it's on the 360 too I'll just stick with that version.
Obviously the PS3 will be a massive hit,and it will sell out at launch no trouble at all with both the Sony fanboys(Sorry to use the word, but there are a lot of them) and tech heads lapping it all up.
But even the most die hard Playstation lover in the world has to admit that(ignoring Resistance f.o.m)the launch line up is,with regards to exclusives, very weak, with nearly every worth while title going on the 360 simultaneously anyway.
And apart from Blu-Ray (I work for Game, and the majority of the general public seem to have no idea what this is anyway)it doesn't seem to be offering that much to gamers, well not for a good few months/years anyway.
  • UncleLou #66 6 years ago

What I fail to understand is how you "Sony only" gamers (it could be "MS only", but how things went, it's not), can wait, and wait, and wait, and eat some BS while waiting...

Not quite sure what you mean - wait for what? The PS3? Does that mean the main reason why you bought the 360 was because it was here earlier? Serious question, btw., I am neither a Sony nor a MS gamer.
  • miiiguel #67 6 years ago

UncleLou: yes it was, it was the main reason! No problem whatsoever to say that I was with a real "so passé" feeling playing with that 5 year XB and a 7 years PS2! I have no doubt at all if PS3 came out first I would be a PS3 owner right now.
I guess I'm lucky that 360 came out 1st, so I got to spend less money in a very good machine. Like I said before, I will check PS3 and see if it deserves the huge pile of money Japaneses are asking for it 600 Eur, plus 75Eur per game. If it prooves to deserve, I'll do my best efforts to buy it.

But, one thing's sure, I'm very happy right now with the white box (replace "happy" by "excited", every Saturday night when friends show up), so I will not rush to buy Sony's machine like I did with the white lady, but for sake of the explained reason.

captainrentboy: thanks man, allways nice to hear that non-esoteric behave is not outdated.

Ok, I see. I am not in a hurry because I am mostly a PC gamer, so I'll just wait if any, and if yes, which, console has the most games I am interested in. Most likely it'll be the PS3, as there's a greater crossover between the 360 and the PC.
  • immateriaux #69 6 years ago

I agree with that - the main reason that I'd get a PS3 is if it offers something different to the PC, which is my main gaming platform. The PS2 did that in its time but the XBox 360 doesn't - it merely continues to un-excite.
  • miiiguel #70 6 years ago

yeah, I mean, everybody's entitle to his own tastes, me on the other hand, and mainly because I work > 9 hours a day in a office desk computer, cannot even imagine, spend my ludic times in other one at home.
Also, I use my in PC box just Linux, and as you all know, Linux + gaming doesn't mix very well. Additionally playing in the living room with familiy and friend is much more appelative to me than sit everyone arround an office desk.

But, you should check those exclusive titles, 'cos this time arround I guess every major title is going to appear in both platforms, the gaming buisness got too expensive to develop for exclusive contracts to emerge, and if they do, guess who has the deeper pockets ?
    I can be wrong, though...

Certainly unless Sony can hang onto its exclusives the case for buying a PS3 at a significantly higher price starts to evaporate. Reverse compatibility kept me loyal at the last generational change, the announced price of the console I'd rather own and the lack of games that impress me thus far on any of the new generation of machines mean I'm happy to wait and carry on with upcoming PS2 titles for the foreseeable.

Until I saw the Lost Planet demo I had no reason to believe I'd be buying into the next gen for at least a year, but that is some tasty looking shizzle CAPCOM have put together there. If it plays as good as it looks I'll have a hard time resisting, but maybe I'll get lucky and it'll end up being the same kind of console "exclusive" as the Grand Theft Autos and Resident Evil 4.
  • Steroyd #72 6 years ago

But, you should check those exclusive titles, 'cos this time arround I guess every major title is going to appear in both platforms, the gaming buisness got too expensive to develop for exclusive contracts to emerge, and if they do, guess who has the deeper pockets ?

    It's a double edged sword.

It costs extra money to develop games for more than one console, so if the other versions don't sell at least the right amount of copies to at least break even money wise it's not worth launching on said console.
  • miiiguel #73 6 years ago

Steroyd: yeah, not really into economics, but one cannot ignore 360's 5 milions user base, as of today.

Still, my understanding of this issue, is that there'll be virtually no difference between the 2 systems, more one game to one side, more 12 to other, there'll be residual at most. So if one is really into multimedia stuff, sonnectivity between digital cameras, the Blu-Ray thing, stuff beyond gaming PS3 is the way to go, if you want your box to game, 360 would be a smarter choice. It really dependes on "your thing", as well as how much the 200 Eur + 15 eur per/game really costs to you. You will have to pay for the difference between the media's price.

note: "you", is of course used as a generic noun. ;)

God, I've got to stop reading the comments pages, all these fanboy comments really annoy me. Listen, some people will buy a PS3. Some people will buy/already have a 360 over this holiday system. It is their choice. No matter what console someone buys, they will be happy with it. The console you should buy should be the one with the software that appeals to you most. That is why I'm getting a PS3. Games like Warhawk, Resistance, Tekken, DMC, I like them, so I will get them. And I know there are people who like the games the 360 has to offer.
Edit for last bit, I've calmed down now after my electroshock treatment. Sorry.

To all the 360 fanboys screaming 'why would you buy a ps3?' let me articulate calmy why I am...

360 is an excellent console however I'm not compelled to buy one at this time because I'm a PC gamer and many of 360's top games both current and upcoming are available for PC. Not so with some of PS3's more appealing launch or near-launch games such as Motorstorm, Resistance, Heavenly Sword, Warhawk. PS3's backwards compatibility is another fun feature. I appreciate the arguments of those anti-BC folk however BC is good PR plain and simple. Nice to know I can insert PS3 in place of my PS2 and continue playing my PS2 back-catalogue uninterrupted.

360 will be a necessary purchase sooner or later but it's far less necessary at this time if you're a PC gamer.

BTW glad to read Assassin's Creed is coming to PC and 360 as it's always a shame to see gamers miss out on quality games due to consumer-unfriendly commercial influences.

To those contining their console vs console messageboard campaigns - you poor, wretched fanboys.
  • manic_mouse #80 6 years ago

Does anyone else think that Sony are relying far too heavily on Blu-Ray to sell the PS3 (and vice versa)? Now the reviews are in it seems Blu-Ray is not as good as HD-DVD and is more expensive to produce, so it's now looking like there's a real chance it might be a flop (whereas up until it was released it seemed to be the better format).

If Blu-Ray loses the format war the PS3 will have lost it's major selling point over the competition and will be stuck with an expensive drive and media. It would no longer be able to justify it's high price.

Blu-Ray will either be the PS3's big advantage or it's Achillies heel, depending upon how the format war goes IMHO.

Personally I'm going to wait until it drops to below £300 before I take the plunge, but no doubt there'll be plenty of great games out by then for me to sink my teeth into. The only thing tempting me to pay the full £425 is Blu-Ray movies, but there's no point buying into that until (and if) it's won the format war.

"If Blu-Ray loses the format war the PS3 will have lost it's major selling point over the competition and will be stuck with an expensive drive and media. It would no longer be able to justify it's high price."

Even if Blu-Ray looses the High-def home cinema format war, the disks will still be viable for PS3 games.
Ahh yes, the "but PS3 games will have increased storage thanks to Blu-Ray" debate. It seems to have died down as of late, with games like Oblivion fitting comfortably inside a standard DVD9, but I do think people need to think more about the future.
Current attitudes of "A DVD is big enough" smack of that Bill Gates comment from waaaay back. Y'know, when he said "640k should be enough for everyone".
OK, its a slightly different context but I think you get my point, just because it's enough now dosent mean it will be in a few years time. There are already PS2 games that span multiple DVD's (DVD5's I assume) so whats gonna happen when a developer of one of those games starts working with high-def textures and FMV, and a whole crapload more detail?

Disk-swapping aint a problem on lenear games, but it would cause problems for anything in the GTA/Oblivion mould.

And just to try and avoid any flames, I shall mention that I do own a 360 along with 6 games. Tis a fine machine for the money, and has given me many fun hours of gaming.
  • manic_mouse #82 6 years ago

I do realise that Blu-Ray discs will still offer an advantage for PS3 games. However my point is that Sony are justifying the PS3's high price tag because it is "more" than a games-player. If Blu-Ray flops then this logic, and the reasoning for paying more for a PS3, suddenly evaporates.

For me, personally, the only incentive for buying a PS3 at £425 is the prospect of HD movies as well as games. I have my 360 which will be enough to tide me over on the games front until the PS3 is more affordable. But the prospect of HD movies on my TV has me very excited and I would be willing to pay for it.

However I'm grounded enough to realise that Blu-ray hasn't won the format war, and thus this "added bonus" simply isn't worth it until the format war is over. The simple fact is that buying into the Blu-Ray promises of the PS3 are a risk for the consumer which could potentially leave them with a useless player and a lot of useless Blu-Ray discs. And those consumers will remember that they paid more for the priviledge of being shafted.

I think that touting Blu-Ray video playback as a reason to buy a PS3 is a little premature. It's a risk, and one that could leave Sony with a lot of angry customers.
    Edited by 1 at 03/09/06 @ 14:43
  • toy_brain #83 6 years ago

If someone is buying the PS3 purely as a Blu-Ray player, with the hope that Blu-Ray becomes the standard format, then yea, I can see how they would be left with a useless item if HDDVD becomes the standard.

That being said, I've never gotten the impression that BR movie playback was Sony's main selling point for the machine. True its always something they've mentioned as an incentive, but its always been marketed as a games machine first and foremost, and a BR player as a bonus (Sony has its own line of dedicated BR players it will want to sell to the home-theatre fanatics), so if you are investing in a PS3 purely as a BR player........... well thats your lookout.
You would probably be better off spending £150 (thats my guess based on the reported $200 manufacturing cost BTW) for the 360 HDDVD addon, but whichever way you slice it you're still putting down a certain amount of extra cash on a 'bet'. The only difference is that if BR fails, PS3 games can still benefit, whereas MS have already clearly stated that their addon is for movies only.

In your case, as you seem happy with the 360 and I'm guessing nothing on the PS3 has really grabbed you, I'd say you are right to wait for the PS3 price-drop.

On a personal note, I'm one of those 'perfectly happy with standard DVD' types, and this whole home-theatre format war just annoys and bores the crap outta me.

Let's just pray Blu-ray wins, because everybody is a loser if DVD 1.1 (also know as HD-DVD) comes out on top. But history has shown cosumers favouring inferior products time and again (everything from Microsoft and Video 2000 as the most famous examples), so it's gonna be hard for Sony.

The PS3 will get in my living room sooner or later and probably at launch (if I can get my hands on one). While the majority of the launch titles don't really appeal to me (there's quite a lot of EA shit), there are 2 that do (SingStar and Resistance (if it really turns out to be more than just an FPS with pretty graphics) and those will get me through the first few months. At that time I will still have to finish FF XII, Kingdom Hearts 2 and Okami amongst others and the post launch draught doesn't appear to be as severe as it was with 360: For most 3rd party developers, next gen really starts in November. But maybe I'll wait a few moths till the price comes down (which of course will happen but of course Sony denies. Only idiots (of which there are plenty visiting this website) expect a company to announce a price drop in advance), although I see the €600 as not that big a deal. It does way more than my iPod for instance. It will have HDMI, built-in wifi, Blu-ray, nothing from Microsoft and a large, standard PC HD that I can swap for a few bucks to a 250 or 500gb one. But more importantly, no region lock. That to me alone is worth the price of admission (here's hoping those idiot publishers don't put in some software lock).

I'm not sure about the Wii. It's really cheap and the virtual console sounds great. But the launch line-up doesn't impress me one bit. Mario Galaxies is alright but the Wii Zelda+ doesn't really offer anything that puts it ahead of the Gamecube version. So I'll probably wait for Advance Wars Wii.

But anyway, back to the topic of the article. 3rd party games will be less and less exclusives but I really wonder whether they had such an impact on console sales (apart from the occasional GTA III and Final Fantasy). First party games will be more and more important and in this regard, Nintendo and Sony have a clear advantage (with Halflife 2 coming to next gen consoles there's not that much need anymore for master chief (am I the only one that thinks it's the lamest character name ever?).

Seriously, I'm still not understanding what the freaking war is all about. No one is forcing you to buy anything, eh? If you want a PS3 for 1000 USD then buy it. I could care less...

BTW: Have any of you played any of those PS3 games? People keep listing all these games that are coming out, but, how do you know what they are like beyond the small demos, videos, etc?

I think the war is because Sony fans have been screaming that PS3 has all these exclusive titles, plus 500 HDMI ports plus will run Toy Story 2 realtime, plus ... Whatever. Snooze factor 9. What does piss me off is that there are still people saying PS2 has way better graphics than XBOX.

PS I got a couple of years after launch.

PS2 I only got to play FFX while waiting for Morrowind. So that was what, 3 years after it launched in Oz?

Xbox I bought for Halo and Morrowind.

Xbox 360 I got for Oblivion.

I'm sure PS3 will have something worth buying for.

That's like saying why be excited for the Xbox 360 holiday titles like Gears of War when you havn't played it yourself.

even if Blu-ray loses the format war so what? it's still used for games it'll still sell billions of BD discs from that fact alone, and will make BD's go cheaper anyway.

Not to mention this "format war" will take years to pick up by which the PS3 would have already sold millions's, instead of the HD-DVD's hundred thousands.
  • 2099net #99 6 years ago

Well, going back to the subject of the article... you know, what started all these posts... it's clear the fact the Assassin's Creed is going to be on the 360 as well as the PS3 is a setback for Sony.

Given that its obviously been under development for the 360 for months (and rumours are development is actually "led" on the 360) I cannot understand why Ubi Soft have been so cagy about a 360 release until now.

The only reason I can think of is that Sony paid them money not to. A classic Sony "spoiler" tactic. It seems Sony's marketing is focused more on stopping people from buying another console then showcasing the actual advantages of their own console. Which perhaps means they have little faith in it themselves? Wouldn't it be damning if the 360 version actually looks better then the PS3 one?

And I guess the news is out now, rather than Jan 2007 (after the PS3's launch) is because there's been too many leaks/rumours/knowing winks in the media about a 360 release.

Sony are really getting on my wick. I don't care how good the PS3 is (which remains to be seen) but their arrogance and unethical marketing are really making me hope that they fail big time. Atari, Nintendo, Sega... it is Sony's turn?
  • captainrentboy #100 6 years ago

"Is it true that the PS3 high end pack wont actually come bundled with an HDMI cable?I just read it online a second ago,or has that always been the case?"

Yeah apparently it's true. You'll have to fork out another £20ish to be able to play 1080p content like Blu-Ray movies (not that any games will support it).

So the REAL price of the PS3 on launch day, with a game and cable, will be more like £500 minimum...
  • Penguinzoot #102 6 years ago

    @2099net

Yep - seems to me the only explanation that makes sense is that Ubi were unable to make any public announcements re the 360 version while any exclusivity deal with Sony was under negotiation.

If there was a formal exclusivity deal on the cards, it looks like it fell through.

Overall, this is good news for gamers generally, from the perspective of making a good looking game more widely available.

I don't suppose we'll ever find out if Sony tried and failed to get an exclusive with Ubi on this. If they did, it is a bit of a bummer for them that it failed, but they still have plenty of PS3 exclusives lined up anyway :-).
  • 2099net #103 6 years ago

    @Penguinzoot

But did Ubi ever consider making the game a PS3 console exclusive. I would have to say, based on the little evidence we know, they didn't.

I think if any money did change hands, it was just to stop Ubi showing the X360 version to the press/public.

I'm happy its multiplatform. I really think in 2 or 3 years time, the only "console exclusive" titles will be first party published ones. Which means Sony will still have the advantage of MS to a certain extent.

I wish all third-parties would just stop this nudge-nudge, wink-wink exclusivity posing. We all know exclusives mean nothing in this day and age. We all know if a game sells like hot cakes on a PS3 (or 360) they'll put it out on the opposing format. They'll just get round it by making the same game and calling its "1.5" or "Director's Cut" or something and putting minimal additional features in, like Konami did with Metal Gear Substance or will do with Winning Eleven/PES.

The days of mass market exclusives from third-party publishers are over.

  • 2099net #110 6 years ago

    @Skootch

I think Sony will have the advantage, because their 1st Party titles have been exposed to millions of gamers on the PS1 and PS2 and are well-known brands. As much as we hate EA and its constant updates and licences, they sell to the public because they are familiar and comfortable with the names.

Forza may or may not be better than Gran Turismo - that's not the point. What is is that Gran Turismo is a much more recognised and - for want of a better word - "beloved" game than Forza Motorsport.

Microsoft have the difficult task of appealling to the mass audience while also starting most of their gaming "brands" from scratch. We all know that, as good as a game may be, it can still flop if the game itself is an unknown quantity with the public.

GAME OVER for Sony's Sales Hopes

The Xbox 360 is the fastest selling system ever in 40 of the 41 countries it has been released in. The Xbox 360 completely dominated the August, 2006, European Game Convention in Leipzig, Germany. Especially with the announcement that the Xbox 360 will be the ONLY place where European gamers will be able to play a next-generation Soccer game for TWELVE MONTHS that runs in high-definition video with true 5.1 digital sound!!!

The fact that Sony is going to miss the Christmas season in Europe is INCREDIBLE!!! Sony JUST DROPPED THE BALL; they JUST LOST!!!

By the way, Sony knew this was going to happen, because there were Japanese analysts saying this all along. YET ANOTHER SONY LIE!!!

Mitsubishi Securities recently announced that the Playstation 3 would only sell 3 million systems by March of 2007, due to production problems. The fact that Sony is STUPID enough to try and lie again, by saying that they will still reach their goal of 6 million by March of 2007, even though the system won't be released until then in Europe, and the distribution to North America and Japan has been reduced by 50% is just plain STUPID... How STUPID does Sony think people are???

We also learned that High-Definition cables will NOT be included in ANY version of the Playstation 3!!! The Xbox 360 Premium comes with a set of cables that can be used as both High-Definition Cables and standard-definition cables. This means that consumers will need to spend ANOTHER $40 for a set of PS3 Component Cables or another $99 for an HDMI cable. The Playstation 3 will actually cost consumers up to $700!!! MY GOD, the Playstation 3 is TERRIBLE!!!

TWO THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT CHEAP Ebay Cables:

    1. Ebay Cables may appear cheap at first, but if you look at the Shipping Cost, you will see that something that should cost about $3 is suddenly listed with a HUGE shipping cost of over $35. In other words, they make you think you did a good job bidding or purchasing the product, but they make ALL their money on the HUGE Shipping Costs!!!

    2. Ebay Cables that are cheap like that are VERY low quality!!!

    JAPANESE RELAUNCH FOR XBOX 360

There was just an announcement that says that Microsoft has now decided to sell the Core system in Japan. Previously, only the Premium was available in Japan, and it sold for about $365. The Core system will now be sold in Japan for only $249, and it will include TWO FREE GAMES. The games that will be included are the awesome Project Gotham Racing 3, and the game that Japanese gamers looked forward to a lot--Ninety Nine Nights!

At the Tokyo Game Show, I bet that Microsoft will also announce a similar deal for the Premium Xbox 360 system in Japan.

Everybody knew all along that the Xbox 360 would be the number one selling system worldwide; it has been released in 41 countries, and it is the fastest selling system ever in 40 of them. Japan is the only country where the Xbox 360 wasn't selling well in. Worldwide the Xbox 360 has achieved all of its sales goals, and it is currently on track to achieve its sales goal of 10 million systems sold by the end of the year, as well as 15 million systems sold by June of 2007.

According to Mitsubishi Securities, the Playstation 3 is now only going to sell 3 million systems by March of 2007. The fact that Sony will only be shipping 100,000 Playstation 3 systems in Japan this year means that BY DEFAULT the Xbox 360 will have sold more systems than the Playstation 3 in Japan by the end of 2006!

The Tokyo Game Show will be VERY interesting! The Relaunch of the Xbox 360 in Japan is going to be VERY interesting! The Microsoft X06 Trade Show will also be something VERY special!!!

A crying shame that Ubisoft don't release it on PS2 as well. It might mean a slight loss of quality but what the hell !
    They surely would clean up.
It seems like Sony think some of the big game designers are in cahoots with them to ensure sales of the PS3. A bit of a marketing ploy that might blow up in Sony's face !
They've forgotten about the XBox 360.
I really want this game but can't afford a PS3, however, I can just about manage an XBox and as a lot of other good games will be released on both consoles I might just go Microsoft's way . . .
