New Zelda turns DS into Spirit Pipe News

DS News by Robert Purchese

9 November, 2009

Nintendo has revealed that The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks will include sections where you play the DS like a woodwind instrument.

During these Spirit Pipe bits, you blow on the DS microphone and press the screen to adjust pitch.

Nintendo tells us the Spirit Pipe plays an "essential role" in Zelda: Spirit Tracks, just as the conductor's baton did in Zelda: Wind Waker and the flute did in Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

In Spirit Tracks you'll need to seek out guardians and recreate their songs before you can uncover the path to temples and go their on your fancy train. That's the same fancy train that's upgradable, and the same train upon which Zelda and Link will work together.

Zelda: Spirit Tracks will be released here on 11th December. Our gamepage below has all the scoops so far.

That's the missus' Christmas present sorted.

Why the hell is this getting negative feedback? She likes Zelda...

Guess I won't be playing this in bed then.

EDIT: This isn't a lewd joke, I'm being serious - most of my DS gaming takes place while my missus is asleep!

One of these days they'll invent a device that allows you to manipulate characters or environments in games using a button. Imagine the possibilities!

Goddamnit, Nintendo. How the hell am I supposed to play this in the metro? And you're from Japan, for Pete's sake! Your commuters can barely move on the trains - and now you want them to bring their DS up to their face and play it like a flute?

At least make it optional. Put a screen at the beginning saying: "Do you want to look like an utter twit in public? Yes/No."

Assuming its implemented well, played in private, I'm going to love this addition.

Ocarina, Majora's Mask, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess all had interactive musical elements which were, on the whole, successfully implemented. Doubt this will be half-heartedly slapped in there.

Why are people giving negatives to posts about playing this in public? It's a legit issue, and this is supposed to be a portable device.

Sounds interesting - extra bit of depth to the game I guess. Don't see the need for blowing though personally. December can't come quick enough...

Not really sure if I want to blow on Link's pipe tbh. Might look a bit weird on the commute on the way to work. Still a definite purchase from yours truly.

I don't know why there are so many complaints about this; it's not like we'll need to do this all the time, admittedly it will probably be more often blowing out candles in the last one that I only remember doing once. Just save and play the 'embarassing bit' at home.

did you play the last game? sometimes save points are far between.. In the last game you had to shout at the f-ing thing to get past a bit... I was playing it on a long flight.. idea was to complete it.. never did because i didnt want to do that bit.

Oh god. Why must Nintendo ruin the DS Zelda games by adding horrible features like this? The crappy touchscreen controls in PH were bad enough but this?
