New Wolfenstein coming this summer News

PC Xbox 360 PlayStation 3
News by Ellie Gibson

12 February, 2009

Activision has revealed that the new Wolfenstein title will be released this year.

Speaking in a conference call, company president Mike Griffith said, "This summer we expect to release an all new Wolfenstein built on id Software's well-established videogame franchise." The game is in development for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

It's being developed by Raven Software, who are also working on first-person action title Singularity. "The game propels players into a sci-fi experience, where they must navigate through two intertwining eras to prevent a catastrophic accident," explained Griffith. Singularity will be released this year too, for the same platforms as Wolfenstein.

But what about Bond, James Bond? Griffith confirmed the new 007 game is being developed by Bizarre Creations, the studio behind Project Gotham Racing. However, its release has been delayed until next year.

"We made a strategic decision to move our next James Bond release from late 2009 to 2010 to benefit from a better launch window and avoiding having to compete with the large holiday lineup and going head-to-head with Call of Duty, both of which negatively impacted the performance of this title this holiday," explained Griffith.

"The movement will have an added benefit in staggering the completions of our racing title and the next Bond, both in development at Bizarre Creations. This will allow the studio to give each title the time and attention it deserves for finish and polish."

Activision has yet to confirm which platforms the Bond game is in development for.

Return to castle wolfenstein was the last great game I played on the PC. The single player game was just perfect. I never played online tho - doesn't interest me.

I'm more excited about Bizarre's new racing game. Although I imagine it'll be PGR5 in all but name.

I have to admit, I never played past the first level of the Xbox version of Return to Castle Wolfenstein; but played many, many, many hours of the team-based multiplayer mode. Wolfenstein multiplayer really launched the Xbox Live experience for me.

RTCW and Enemy Territory multi player is stupendous. Highlights include blowing up defences on D-Day, using a tank to rob a bank, and sabotaging dams and power stations, all of which demand demand some teamwork and balance betweeen the classes. If they can bring that level of gameplay and map design to the new one (and to XBox Live), it could knock everything else into a cocked hat.
