New Tomb Raider out in November News

PC PlayStation 2 DS Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 Wii
News by Ellie Gibson

23 June, 2008

Eidos has confirmed the latest instalment in the Tomb Raider series will be released in November.

That's according to the brand new Tomb Raider: Underworld website, which is packed with podcasts, developer diaries and screenshots. Highlight: a picture of Lara fighting a shark.

Tomb Raider: Underworld sees ol' bigtits exploring the junglist massive of Mexico and probably ending up in some kind of, you know, underworld. The game is in development for Xbox 360, PC, PS2, PS3, Wii and DS. There's more info in our preview.

But has it played better, thats the question we're all asking, Tomb Raider could've been a British equiverlant of Metroid or Castlevania if only...*daysdreams* not about boobs mind you oh no, about gameplay *nerd* glorious exploration, puzzles and none of that franchise spoiling focus on pointy breasts and rubbish combat!

I dont know about what you think but since TR:Legend, tomb raider definately plays better, its gameplay rivals that of games like Prince of Persia, God of War. Combat hasnt been its strongest point but to be honest, combat has never been the reason I play tomb raider, puzzles and exploration is what makes tomb raider what it is.

I agree though, that all the masses focus on are big boobs and even shorter shorts! The recent games has detracted the focus from that quite a bit and people are actually talking about how good it plays and I am sure Underwolrd will be no different.

Fighting sharks!! Brilliant, just like TR2 which was a high point in the series.

I agree to an extent alimokrane, the series was 'recovered' so to speak (but then again The Last Revelation was also dubbed a recovery, and has some fine moments as well) with Legends and the remake for the Anniversaryof Tomb Raider was certainly a nod but not neccessarily true to the overall direction of the past but I still feel the potential there in the original has never really been built on in a way it could hav ebeen if the series had been handled better, though I admit what I want from the series isn't what others may want, and it certainly wouldn't sell millions in the run up to Christmas.

Oh Absolutely, Legend or Anniversary, as great as they may be, they certainly arent what Tomb Raider 1 was to the game industry. Crystal D is definately playing catch up especially with Prince of Persia. the franchise has gone from being a leader to a follower - that's not to say it's bad but it would have been nice if it was the ONE that everyone follows given that it's THE franchise that started it all in this genre.

The two recent games have had some BRILLIANT gameplay ideas but like you said it never achieved the Greatness that it once had. Still, credit to Crystal D for injecting a new life into the series after Angel of Darkness and I can imagine it'll only get better and better. I especially appreciate the fact that the story since legend has been much more than follow a bad guy and recover an artefact scenario. The story is dealing more with lara's character, more personal and character driven if you will. The ending of Tomb Raider Legend, I thought, was one of the BEST acted endings in a game ever. It simply was top notch.

Tomb Raider Legend was a superb game. I gave up on Anniversary though which just seemed broken. Awful camera along with terrible level design made it a huge fail in my opinion.

Will definitely wait for the reviews for this game, but can't see how this game can better Uncharted Drake's Fortune which just makes this franchise seem old.

I never played Anniversary, but Legend was brilliant. If this has similar gameplay mechanics (esp. in terms of camera and controls), then I'm sold. Looks very nice as well :)

I thought Legend was a bit crap, but only played it on PC.

I loved Anniversary on the PC. But the controls were a bit ropey - even with a 360 pad. Great looking game though and a lot of fun

The junglist massive? +1 to Ellie, there.

Also, most games that feature harpoon guns are ace so my hopes are automatically high. Doubly so if I can use them on land.

Can we put Lara to bed already? Tomb Raider got tired years ago, it's time for something new.

Legend was a fucking pile of dogshite which i completed in one Friday night and a bit of Saturday morning.

Anniversary was better, but TR1 will always have a special place in my heart next to Deus Ex.

Lara jumping the shark? Yes, for quite some time.

At least it seems that creators finally decided not to model "new Lara" (i.e. post TR4 Lara) after certain actress and certain awful movies. Which is good. Still no sign of using realistic chest proportions, but I guess after so many years, nobody can really expect that >_>

I hope the Wii controls will be as good as in TR: Anniversary.

(IMO, they were VERY good, near perfect even. I completely disagree with Eurogamer's review regarding the controls (and to some extent, the camera). TR: A was by far the best TR experience I ever had due to the Wii controls.)

Let's see if combat makes the leap from god awful to awful, and the near-linear parkour exploration becomes a little less near-linear parkour exploration.

It's probably no on both counts, but at this point one should remain optimistic.
