New Silent Hill movie confirmed

Avary on board to write sequel.

A second Silent Hill movie is officially on the way, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Screenwriter Roger Avary and producer Samuel Hadida, who worked on the first film, have already signed up for the project.

Movie company Davis Films will start shooting next year, once they've finished Resident Evil 4.

Silent Hill 2 isn't the only videogame adapatation Avary's working on right now - he's also penning Return to Castle Wolfenstein, due to hit cinemas in 2010.

I think Silent Hill may be the least worst film adaptation of a video game that I have seen.
  • Bazfrag #2 2 years ago

1st one wasn't too bad. Probably the least rubbish game movie i have seen. Not something to boast about but still. C4 edited the life out of it when they showed it for some reason.

    A sequel?!?

i HONESTLY wasnt aware there was an original!
  • flaming.carrot #5 2 years ago

Hope they don't base it on Silent Hill: Homecoming
  • M_of_the_sys #6 2 years ago

I kinda liked the first movie. Could never get into the games but it made me want to. Bought the first game on eBay, played it for half an hour and then never played it again.
Movie was still ok though. True fans might complain.

The film is very good in my opinion (yes it mangles the lore somewhat) but the design, especially the sound design was superb. I also love Gans (Brotherhood of the Wolf, is another great film) but I don't think he's attached to this so will be intrigued to see who gets to helm the sequel...
  • bad09 #8 2 years ago

Nice the first was decent enough.
  • Ornithophobe #9 2 years ago

if only it were Michael Bay, final scene would be the protagonist sword fighting Pyramid head atop a church while the US air force carpet bomb the town.

Thats what everyone really wants, err.. isn't it ?

I enjoyed the first Silent Hill movie... it got a bit silly and muddled toward the end but it did a fantastic job of capturing the eerie atmosphere of the games and I loved the transition effects. They wasted Sean Bean though... or maybe he was too expensive to be the lead?
  • kendoji #11 2 years ago

Yep liked the first, so this could be cool.
  • Bigglesworth #12 2 years ago

    True fans might complain.

    Might, and do!

As others have said, though, as far as game adaptaions go, I'd agree it was pretty good. I'd kind of like to see them take each game in sequence... though admittedly the chances of them successfully adapting the subtleties of SH2 to film in this genre aren't too good.
  • Tomo #13 2 years ago

I thought the first one was atrocious. The atmosphere was pretty great, but the story and plot were terrible.
  • XdarXideX #14 2 years ago

If Avary can fix the mistakes of the first then I'll be happy. They cut the film down before release which made some of already appaling dialog seem more out of place. It's definately a film that's better the second or third time because you've already accepted the bad parts.

More barbed wire retribution pls pls!
  • Zebula77 #16 2 years ago

I loved the first one, actually. I mean, I'm biased towards anything that has to do with the Silent Hill universe, but still - they did a good job on that one, staying really quite faithful to the source material.

I really, really, really hope they're basing the sequel on Silent Hill 2 - that alone would ensure a certain level of quality.

As a huge SH fan I thought the film was great. It really captured the essence of the games and managed to explain it in such a way that people not familiar with the series might not understand – esp. as (let’s face it) most fans don’t even fully understand the convoluted plot.

As a film it ticked a lot of the right boxes, there were loads of homage’s, camera angles, sound track sure people might dispute some of the fan-service stuff (pyramid head), but what could you expect really, esp. from such an iconic character.

I personally really commend them for trying to fill in the blanks, that really went unexplained in the games, such as the siren. It’s a bold move to try and do such things without pissing off the ardent fan base, but they treated the source material with respect and gave it the movie it deserved.

I for one am looking forward to the next effort.

Oh. I came on to the comments to say "I thought the first one was actually alright" thinking I'd be a lone voice.
  • XdarXideX #19 2 years ago

    @zuluhero

sorry but I really have to disagree there. They didn't make ANY effort to explain it to people who haven't played the games. (by the way I don't think it's fair to assume people who haven't played the games 20 times over wouldn't understand them)

I consider myself a fan of Silent Hill, the 2nd game being my favorite. But seeing the movie for the first time was hugely disappointing for me. The only things I found were special about the movie were the sets and camera work borrowed from the game. But Gans and Avary turned Silent Hill into a form of Purgatory/Hell with a ton of people trapped there.

Imagine how that's going to work (or not work) if they try to adapt Silent Hill 2 into that.

The first movie was the best video game movie adaptation I've seen. As a movie, the look and feel were spot on but the script was not good at all.
  • vegard #21 2 years ago

so...will Avary be writing this from jail?

Live Action adaption of a Video Game then...
  • GamesConnoisseur #24 2 years ago

Still Silent Hill DOES have living people in the town, and they are pretty much removed from the reality we live in, so the idea of having purgatory is not that far removed in keeping with the universe innit?

Konami had said they purposely kept the universe obscure and not explictly explained, to keep the air of mystery and allowing gamers to have their own interpretations. That works better in game setting than in a movie where you would need to be careful either not to lock things down or leave it too confusing.

Still I did enjoy the film more than other terrible game adapted movies, and hoping they can retain important elements of SH2 excellent storyline.

Like others.... my personal favourite of the whole series, played it once every year or two!

I loved the first one, it kept the atmosphere from the games (apart from the use of Pyramid Head). I'm glad to read from the comments here that I wasn't the only one.

I wouldn't mind an adaption of Silent Hill: The Room. Although the game itself was terrible, I thought the plot was good and thats what kept me going to the end.
  • Bulbatron #27 2 years ago

I enjoyed the Silent Hill film. As a previous poster said, it mangled the law somewhat - but it still kept me watching.
  • ZuluHero #28 2 years ago

The pyramid head is a weird one because it crops up in paintings in the Hystroical Society in SH2 (in proper Bosch stylee), and also in paintings in SH3. If it was just James' personal tormentor, how come poeple can paint pictures of it?

Besides, I thought the pyramid head's look was based on what executioner's wore during rituals from when that town first was founded anyway, so its feisable that the same manifistation could be used to torment multiple people regardless of the reason for their 'guilt'.
  • FortysixterUK #29 2 years ago

The last Silent Hill movie got very good after the cringingly acted opening 10-15 minues....got good once the siren went off the first time.
The games STOPPED being any good after number 4.
Gives the games back to Team Silent.( the original Devs )
Try and avoid crap kid actors and poor scripting in the first 15 minutes of the next film
  • Senate #30 2 years ago

When she first walks down the stairs and the siren goes off was cool, shame about the religeous nuts (eyes did roll).
  • davisorle #31 2 years ago

Yeah, the first one was unexpectingly watchable, if not also very good -one watch movie-. ( which i watched a couple more times later on :p )

I hope the second one is even better than the first one and does so feels promising for some reason. Lets wait and see I guess. Cool
  • Agent_Llama #32 2 years ago

Pyramid Head isn't James' personal tormentor - he appears to many others, hence being depicted in paintings etc in the other games as an executioner etc. He still doesn't make sense when he first appears in the first film though.
  • ZuluHero #33 2 years ago

    @Agent_Llama

Heh - i said almost the same thing a few posts up! :)
  • zedzee #34 2 years ago

I actually thought the film was the best adaptation of a game...ever!

The story was 'original' in that it wasn't copied from one of the games - right? (sorry, not played all the SH games, so I might be wrong) So you could say it was like a new SH game, with its own storyline etc.

And there was a great deal of faithful inclusion of stuff that you might encounter in a SH game. Sirens, slashing nurses, addiction, creepy crawlies etc. I thought all of that was faithfully done...oh yes, and the policewoman, wasn't she in the first SH game?

Anyway, it was one of the better game adaptations, despite the last bit being a bit drawn out and cult-ish. Let's hope the second is as equally good, if not better. Might even consider seeing it in the cinema.
  • ZuluHero #35 2 years ago

    @zedzee

It was basically the plot of the first game, with a few name changes and a bit of fan service.
  • AHiFi #36 2 years ago

Nice mentiion of the fact that Avary is getting sentenced on the 29th for gross vechicular manslaughter...

What they should of done with part one is , for people new to the silent hill world, start with a later title. Like 4, and slowly revile the history and the tie ins with the town. I think fans like my self would rather be teased in to the climax of seeing some monster that we know about. Have the next movie fix the errors of the first. Then maybe Th Room, how it only has slight clues and glimpses of the town. Then for a 3rd movie, go to the town. We only see a bit of the town in the first flick anyways. They better explore the town more this next movie... y the way the first film, if you just count it as a dumb white guys lame attempt at Japanese horror.... still an okay film.
