New Rings MMO trailer

Lord of the EGTV playlist.

Codemasters has released a new trailer for Turbine's upcoming Lord of the Rings MMORPG, which it's publishing later this year.

Available exclusively through Eurogamer TV, the trailer shows off lots of Shire-y locations.

And if you've not checked it out in the past, you ought to take a look at our Shadows of Angmar gamepage, where all the cool hobbits hang out.

There you'll discover links to more EGTV-hosted trailers, along with a preview that begins with a lot of nonsense from Pat about how Tom Bombadil is ace. He bloody well isn't.

Although Shadows of Angmar hopefully will be.

Seems they got the atmosphere down right, it looks nice. I really really really want this game to be good, because I'm bored with WoW

I saw some of the guys from Codemasters demonstrating this at a talk last summer and it is a 99% WoW clone from what I saw. The UI even looks identical and they have the same little player help systems like the floating text that shows the objectives for selected quests - it was really quite embarrassing to watch.

I was looking forward to this a lot as I'm a massive LOTR fan. But now actually seeing it in "action" has just made me think of WoW. I think the villages in this will span more space than the little hamlets of Azeroth from the looks of it but, whilst this will attract the hardcore LOTR demographic, I don't think it stands a chance against WoW, especially with The Burning Crusade due very soon.

All MMORPG's are the same. It's an inherent unavoidable flaw in the gameplay design of these games that they can't have an ending and they can never let your actions affect anyone else in the gameworld. Thus every one of them feel hollow and shallow. WoW was pretty god at disguising this fact, but it'll eventually shine through.

Also, Codemasters doesn't exactly inspire trust when it comes to MMORPG's.

It is very WoW-like but given how Turbine got burned with DDO when they tried something different it's understandable. It's not as if WoW itself was a beacon of originality; almost all it's features had been done before in the MMO world and Warcraft itself is a Disney version of Warhammer.

The difference between WoW and everything else is polish. Arguably EQ2 is now a better fantasy MMO, but it took Sony an extra couple of years after release to get it right. LOTRO isn't as good as WoW or EQ2 but it is better than most people expected and if you like Middle Earth it's worth a dip. It's certainly better than Vanguard (which is rumoured to be coming out soon).

Talking of Vanguard, if a little bit of a tangent, i got an invite to join the beta today, through IGN. Followed the sign up link and was refused as it is for US residents only, but if you do happen to be the spawn of satan and a worshipper of the great bannana then go to IGN and sign up and let us know what you think.
