New Riiidge Racer on the way for iPhone

Due out this month, reports Famitsu.

Namco Bandai has unveiled another instalment in the classic Ridge Racer series.

According to Famitsu (as translated by Kotaku), this one is in development for the iPhone.

It's titled Ridge Racer: Accelerated and it's out later this month - though it's not clear whether that date applies globally or just to Japan. There's no news on a price yet, either.

Still, at least you can watch a teaser trailer over on Famitsu.com.

Why bother to develop it? Just port the exceptionaly shite 360 version they bought out, that should work on the iPhone.
  • Flying_Pig #3 2 years ago

Really like RR on the PSP, so I hope this is good

    "the exceptionaly shite 360 version"

    Twat.
  • youhavenomail #7 2 years ago

I'll buy that for a dollar!

    (And not a cent more.)

The 360 version was great - good career structure and fun to play. Maybe not " the best graphics evar!" but looked fine and smooth for the most part.

RR7 on PS3 was just an improved version of RR6 - minus the career structure.

Will it run at 60fps? Is the iPhone capable of that?

If so, it'll be quite the achievement. I enjoyed RR on the PSP, but not enough to try one again, ever.

I love Ridge Racer, one of my favourite gaming memories was walking home from college in the snow to pick up Ridge Racer Revolutions and then taking my Playstation around to my mate's house to play system linked on the old Ridge tracks :)

But this just doesn't impress at all.... very blocky, unrefined and pretty slow in the videos.... but what I'm worried about the most is the controls!! I still haven't played any racer on the iPhone that would make me want to ditch the PSP!! Shame, but I hope this doesn't put Namco off from trying again on the 360/PS3!! :)

"Woah! That was a great corner! You're one hell of a driver; you gotta teach meeee!"
  • peterfll #12 2 years ago

Those videos look a little rough and ready as if they've been thrown together. I would expect a similar fidelty to the PSP version, after all, we're all told the iPhone is at least as capable? Of course, the control mechanism will be the element to watch.

    I do love RR.

Ridge Racer 6 and 7 are fantastic games. 6 in particular, the career structure there is perhaps the best I have seen in a racing game. RR6 takes a while to get truly started, but apart from that, it's a fantastic game.

This was interesting, I was almost going to say that it would sell me on finally getting an Ipod Touch, but I am not quite convinced given these videos. It seems like a worse version of Ridge Racer PSP, which was fantastic, but which I also own already.

Looks like its tilt control for steering, which is a real shame, as I am not a fan. If it does control well though, would be great for quick bursts of gaming on the tube.
  • Rev.StuartCampbell #15 2 years ago

Most iPod racers offer touch steering options as well as tilt. No idea if Ridge will, but I'd be surprised if it didn't.

It does look a bit slow in the vids (and Jesus, what have they done to the poor girl's teeth?), but remember the early levels of the PSP/360/PS3 games were pretty sluggish too.
  • tinyspark #16 2 years ago

well the video settles the argument of whether the iphone is as graphically power as the PSP...its not.

Silky smooth on PSP...juddery shite on iphone....and the controls will be pish.

    Those teeth are fucked up.

For some reason, parts of the video are slowed down. I don't know if that's a deliberate post-processing effect by the video editors, but if it is, it's hardly showing off the game well.

Having checked youtube, the PSP version definitely looks nicer. The Famitsu video seems to have no lighting whatsoever, and just poor quality art design.

Looks horrid, slow, jerky and muddy. No excuse unless it is on the 2G. Hell, NFS Shift (while not a good game) looks fantastic on a 3GS.

I made the mistake of getting Ace Combat before a sale. Not doing that with a Namco franchise again.
  • GoldLightan #21 2 years ago

I cannot play racing games that don't offer decent controls on the iPhone, there is too much lag in the tilt control scheme.

On the flipside touch controls obscure or limit the screen, and you have the issue of throttle control too :/

Not the greatest interface for this genre really. Difficult to look forward to this.

Everyone's allowed an opinion, dear. Mine is that you're a twat. Try to keep up.

"Just port the exceptionaly shite 360 version they bought out, that should work on the iPhone."
You think so? RR6 lost a load of detail when it was ported to the PS3 and called RR7.
  • GamesConnoisseur #24 2 years ago

Emmit-Assassin who may or may not be a twat.... didnt say PS3 version was superior, when we all know that its came with some details removed. Though that may be interpreteed, rather I think his reference was due to his experience of RR on the X360 and called that a shite.

iPhone can works well and loved the pun on the tilt control of iPhone being called similarly. Ace Combat is reasonably good but a rip off at coming with few missions and pay extra for more contents. So expect RR to come similarly packaged.

Not an ideal way to target iPhone audience as potential rip off stooges... still the costs of development need to be justified by more than 59p a pop. Why not be upfront at the purchase menu and let the gamers decide by paying the whole package or incremential?
  • Caimbeul #25 2 years ago

Ridge racer is supposed to be about speed and drifting...there was not much speed in those trailers.
  • Rev.StuartCampbell #26 2 years ago

Like I said, let's see the finished article. The opening races in RR Type 4, for example, were like shoving a piano through treacle, but it picked up plenty of speed as it went on.
  • Vroom #27 2 years ago

Frame rate and 'feel' is key with the Ridge series of games. Both will prove problematic on the iPhone. The 'feel' is tricky but has been done (have a look at Fastlane Street Racing) and the frame rate in Real Racing is perfectly acceptable. Forget about 60fps however.

    Sign me up regardless!
  • oerhoert #28 2 years ago

RR6 is (relatively speaking) quite different from RR7 with regards to the AI opponents and because it adds a lot of new tracks, so to say that it was ported and rebranded is a bit of a stretch.

Not that Namco wasn't shameless of course, but still, RR7 is more like an alternate universe version than a port of RR6.

"The opening races in RR Type 4, for example, were like shoving a piano through treacle, but it picked up plenty of speed as it went on."

Any idea why the RR team at Namco tends to do this, Reverend? I can't quite see the rationale behind it with RR6 either.

Seems like it IS shit after all, sadly. Just two tracks, with more as DLC, and absolutely awful framerate.
  • ChocNut #30 2 years ago

I love my iphone but this is one more reason why Sony should keep pushing the psp. We need more games damnit! Oh and a second nub while yer at it
