New PS3 firmware update issued News

PlayStation 3 News by Ellie Gibson

16 September, 2009

Firmware update 3.01 is now available to download for the PS3.

So what does it do, exactly? Sony's official response: "3.01 improves system stability during use of some PlayStation 3 format software."

So which software would that be, precisely? Writing on the US PlayStation blog PSN boss Eric Lempel confirmed, "Yes, this will fix the issues that some users have experienced with Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune."

Uncharted players have been complaining, via the likes of the PlayStation forums, that update 3.0 caused the game to freeze. There were also reports of controller compatibility issues. Looks like all that should be sorted out now though.

It's a good job my broadband isn't capped, otherwise I'd use up all my monthly allowance on PS3 firmware updates alone.

It was a conflict caused by 3.00. Its not a game bug. Go grab a coffee.

Also, this update is optional. You only have to install it when you have these problems (which not nearly everyone is experiencing). So youhavenomail, you have nothing to worry about in this case.

Ugh... that's the last time I update my PS3 on an evening as even with a 24 Mbps connection, this one took over 45 minutes to download and install. Ridiculous really. Normally I do downloads before 8am and they've never taken longer than 5 minutes at that time.

I find downloading the update file to a memory stick at work then doing a 'local disk' update on my PS3 is much better for my monthly bandwidth cap and actually quicker too.

As always with ps3 updates there are reports 3.01 breaks the blu-ray drive for some people:

http://ps3.qj.net/PS3-FW-3-01-update-cau...

Could be an isolated case but best to wait a few days.

@phycus - The Blu-ray drives are mechanical and like any optical drive are susceptible to failure. I suspect that it is just bad luck and coincidence why some people have had issues post-firmware update. In all likelihood the drive would have failed even if they hadn't updated. If there really was an issue with the firmware update then everyone would have had the same problem. ;)

Once again the same old PSN bashing.

I just did the update after reading this thread and it took me four (4) whole minutes to complete the whole process, the d/l itself was done in 1:50 min. (24Mb/s connection, don't really know how much I get out of it, but I think it was somewhere around 19-21Mb/s last time I checked.

Four minutes later I was back in the XMB, is that really something to get excited over?

it is when battlefield 1943 suffers from freezing now. I guess sony shouldn't rush this stuff out? Or stop tinkering with base level code that breaks current games.

As it happens I'm playing 1943 right now, as I catch up on my feeds in my iPhone during loading/spawns, and no freezing issues here.

It would indeed suck if 3.01 came with a freeze issue though, but seeing how quickly they handled the uncharted issues I'll guess you'll be in for another hefty 4 min d/l and install soon.

I would also like to bash PSNs download speed.
On a 20mb connection I recently bought Little Big Planet. I had to wait over 1.5 hours! while it downloaded several patches.
That's blooby ridiculous.

Finally!

I didn't mind too much personally since I've had Uncharted for ages and was just re-playing for trophies, but when you consider the amount of new PS3 Slim owners who bought Uncharted in a bundle it doesn't take long to figure out that Sony may have potentially killed off customers with this error.

Anyway, back to trophy hunting for me.

It sounds like many of you have got shit broadband connections to your local exchange (those not using fibre optic). There's nothing wrong with PSN speeds. I can download 168MB in a minute (2.8MBps) from the PSN and that's faster than anything I have downloaded on the PC (most servers max out at 2.2MBps and it's not sustained either).

Wouldnt matter what speed your connection was if the download server you were connecting to was borked.

I downloaded the LBP demo (over 1GB) in under 6 minutes on my glass fibre connection. Don't blame PSN, it's your soddy connection. What is seriously wrong is the SingStar server. Every evening it's the same old story. Can't log in and when you do, you are sure to be booted within two clicks on the X button. And Sony, PLEASE get that ugly font and those grey boxes fixed in 3.02 tomorrow.

Der is not a thing incorrect with PSN it is your inferior British copper telecommunications, here in the Nederlands we all have glass fibre and shiny white teeth. We fart in the general direction of your puny 8Mb connection speed, only the other day I downloaded the entire contents of the library at Alexandria in 0.2 seconds. Aren't I good you pathetic lobster faced booze hounds. Chocolate sprinkles anyone?

my PS3 would reset on the menu screen of batman arkham asylum. It would come back on but there would be no picture going through to my tv. The disc could be ejected but I couldn't switch the ps3 off using the button I would have to switch it off using the switch at the back.

I hope that's been fixed too
