New peripherals for Guitar Hero News

PlayStation 2 Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 Wii
News by Robert Purchese

22 April, 2008

Activision boss Bobby Kotick has said future instalments of Guitar Hero will have new instruments.

"It's not just about guitars," Kotick told Conde Nast Portfolio. "We'll include a lot of other instruments, vocals."

Exact details were scarce, although it seems to add weight to rumours that a drumkit and microphone will feature in the next Guitar Hero instalment - making it identical to rival Rock Band.

Kotick also revealed that you will be able to strum along with local bands from your area, noting that this was the first Activision game to be able to alter its content for different regional markets.

He also discussed the benefits of the merger with Vivendi, noting the benefits of being able to access the Universal Music Group's library of songs.

Kotick talked about the wide appeal of the game, too.

"The artist's relevance and importance to 17-year olds change in a way that you could never get in any other medium," he said.

"Forty per cent of [Guitar Hero] users are women. The age appeal is something we've never seen before: seven year-olds who have no idea who Aerosmith are are playing the band's music on Guitar Hero. So are 45-year olds who spent a good portion of their lives following the band around."

Guitar Hero: Aerosmith is due out in June.

Fact is a riff that GamesIndustry.biz mastered many years ago.

Well, if they can release it for considerably less than £180, I'm happy to permanently shun Rockband!

I hope they make the game compatible with the Rock Band instruments, otherwise I might cry a little bit. And not buy their game.

It's a shame the track listing on Rock Band is better, as I have no intention of buying it for a rip-off price. If GH stop including crap like Aerosmith and get rid of 'battles' in future editions then I'll be perfectly happy to completely forget about Rock Band.

nickthegun, i would rather commit hari kari than play Guitar Hero: Travis...For god's sakes man, Travis!!!

Aerosmith are cool, but we need a Paradise Lost or The Cult edition. Now, that would be cool!

And drums? Hell, yeah. Bring it on.

The problem with Guitar Hero: Travis is that everybody that plays it will end up comminting suicide by the time they reach the end (or partway through the first song) and then they've lost their market for sequels

Forty per cent of [Guitar Hero] users are women.

That explains GH3's strippers, references to "getting" groupies, Judy Nails' boob-job and Casey Lynch being turned into an airbrushed, safely-sexy ornament, then.

Oh no, wait a minute...

Sound like a great plan, hopefully for GH4 they'll do a "veteran" pack that has the game, drum kit and mic without guitars for a reasonable price as I now have 2 guitars.

Hell if Rockband would do the same that would be nice too. - But if they don't then i may just give rockband a miss for the time being.

I think it's kinda funny how originally, the hardcore gaming crowd were all angry at GH3 because it represented the publisher continuing a series after the original developer had split, with everyone considering Rock Band the true successor and GH3 being the sellout, money-grabbing attempt.

Now that Harmonix's new game has turned out to cost more than actually starting your own rock band, it's done a complete 180.

Note to Activision, Harmonix, EA, MTV and whoever else are getting involved with this stuff:

There are only so many plastic instruments I will have in my living room. Guitar and drums is what I'm interested in, so I'll not be buying anything else.

Also, I'll not be buying the "slightly upgraded" instruments that you'll no doubt say comes with GH4 or RB2 or whatever.

If Activision launches this product at around £130 (peripherals+game, naturally) then they will have effectively eliminated any chance of Rock Band ever taking anything but token fanboy sales in Europe. I'm sure Activision have been keenly aware of the price outrage centering around Rock Band and are no doubt planning to exploit it.

Didn't Activision complain that EA/Harmonix were copying their ideas by releasing Rock Band? So now they're having other instruments too? Oh well.

I think its great that the GH franchise is expanding. The problem i have is too many (overpriced) peripherals. I barely have room for 2 guitars and a drum kit but knowing Guitar heros past behaviour the drum kit wont be cross-compatable with rock band. Whatever the price there's no way i'll buy two seperate drum kits for both games.

Considering it's a game called Guitar Hero, the quote "It's not just about guitars" makes me wonder if they've missed the point. They may want to use the valuable IP, but...

rock band in no way costs more than starting a band....just thought i'd say for starters a good electronic drum kit costs in the region of at least £500-£700...not to mention how pricey guitars get.

peace

I'm not sure if you can really consider this copying Rockband. Adding more instruments to the formula is a fairly obvious next step. They can't just keep going with Guitar Hero until the end of time, even the third game felt like old hat.
