New PAL Releases Roundup News

PC PlayStation 2 PSP DS Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 Wii
News by Tom Bramwell

8 October, 2009

Where shall we go this week? Last time on New PAL Releases Roundup we visited the future, as I tried to make a point about how games were running away from the Christmas crush and fell victim myself, typing "2010" whenever I meant "2009". Thanks to the mercy of the internet, anybody who stumbles on the corrected text now will never realise, but we all know the truth. (And I'm probably not helping myself by drawing attention to it, come to think.)

This week, however, we've got a jolly old choice of destinations, largely thanks to the last scion of colour in videogames, the Nintendo family of consoles. On the DS alone we can visit the inside of Bowser's tummy thanks to the sparkling Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, or the outer reaches of your imagination, thanks to the less sparkling but still very flashy Scribblenauts. Or there's a galaxy far, far away in Star Wars: The Clone Wars - Republic Heroes, which is to be contemplated in a review not so far, far away from publication.

Or we can go to war, obviously, since we're talking about videogames after all. This week's war is a guerrilla conflict on an island on the other side of the planet, bossed by Codemasters in the publisher's new take on Operation Flashpoint, not to be confused with the work of Bohemia Interactive in ArmA II, except in its creative goals and commercial aspirations. Behind the bike sheds, 5pm, no crosshairs. Speaking of which, since lots of you have asked nicely (well, some), we'll take a separate look at the PC version of Operation Flashpoint soon.

There's also quite a lot going on in the world of downloads this week, most notably in Frontier's LostWinds 2, the hopefully enchanting follow-up to an enchanting WiiWare launch title, which I personally found enchanting. I was pretty enchanted, for the record. Look out for a review of that at some point tomorrow afternoon, and for all the treats mentioned below in your local emporiums and download lists.

Can we have a separate PC review for Risen as well while you're at it? Deserves it more than OpFlash2, me thinks.

I've ordered Scribblenauts. Once I've played it I might read the reviews. It's the only game where I've looked at the review score and nothing else.

Showing my age but a big WOW at the news Digger HD is available. My all-time favourite game from the '80s, lost in the ravages of time when my 386 was too fast to play it (!)... and now on the PS3! Instant download for me tonight. Anyone know if it's any good?!

Cities XL is out tomorrow?

*scours for reviews*

EDIT: I'm looking forward to the PC review of OpFlash 2, especially when compared to ArmA2, which is a brilliant playable giant bug.

I keep saying when I buy a Harvest Moon game that this one will be the last and the series is just dead etc, but here I am, ready to go to the shops tomorrow and get funny looks for being a fully grown man child buying cute games on the Wii.

I sold my copy of flashpoint today its fucking arse!

Got it 2 day early my excitement ended after i played it. The game just dumps you in the shit, no training level to tell you what button does what or how to use your squad.

The few missions i played were painfully bland add to this clunky controls a slightly confusing interface and to much fucking walking make a game im glad i sold, bring on Brutal Legend!

Yeah I hate having to work stuff out for myself as well. I'd much rather have a game where I can just press A to finish it instantly.

The sad things is, someone like me who really wants a game like Operation Flashpoint:DR will also be disappointed as it's not hardcore enough (in comparison with the original, for example).

I didn't notice how little tutorials actually matter until I realized I can figure out which button does what in a matter of minutes just by pressing them.

Anyway, DQ Wars is pretty interesting.
