New MechWarrior game announced News

PC Xbox 360 News by Robert Purchese

9 July, 2009

Piranha Games and Smith and Tinker are working on a brand new MechWarrior game, confirming reports yesterday.

Known simply as MechWarrior, it's a restart for the series on PC and Xbox 360 - platforms with the power to motion-capture robots for more believable action, according to an interview on IGN.

The pair are currently searching for a publisher and so have no idea when the game will be released, but their plans are ambitious: a single-player campaign, co-op for four and a full suite of multiplayer pursuits. They're even considering cross-play between PC and 360.

There's an RPG mechanic underpinning the game, where experience can be poured into learning certain types of robot, as MechWarrior will avoid the usual race from fastest to the heaviest.

The story, meanwhile, follows an idle nobleman called Khol, who is convinced to put his MechWarrior training to use after an invasion leaves his entire family dead. Why is it never about balloons and dancing.

This sounds pretty awesome. I was a big fan of the early Mechwarrior games (as I used to play Battletech/Mechwarrior), but lost interest around the time FASA ceased to exist and the games moved on to the more action oriented MechAssault series.

Hmm. Not exactly an inspiring line up. Let's hope they don't balls up such a great potential.

Sounds sort of think on info right now. I'll wait to see more before I form any opinions. The old Mechwarrior games were great, but it would be quite possible for a dev to bugger it all up - the name gurantees nothing.

Not cynical me though, oh no :)

:D

But also, co-op play with RPGesque stuff going on... colour me interested.

My bullshitometer just exploded, and I don't even own a PS3.

Very excited for this, though.

Sounds excellent!

For anyone not really aware of Mechwarrior, I recommend hunting down Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries - my favourite of the series.

Keep in mind that these games are pretty old, so do drop by here to help wrangle the game into a working state on your shiny modern PC!

Yay! Massive Fucking Robots!! ^_^

Forget the multiplayer crap and just concentrate on a kick ass single-player mechwarrior RPG.

Sounds great in theory - I always thought MW was a perfect fit for co-op play - but the developer's track record isn't exactly filling me with confidence. Oh well, guess we'll see.

Motion capture robots?!?! Now unless they are building actual Mechs with the full mechanical actuators necessary to make them move without wires and strings, then that's an utter bullshit statement.

Then looking at the games the company made previously and we have a royale frak up right there. As for the experience to learn a mech. What the heck is that about. You build mechs in mechwarrior. You decide if you are equiping LRM, SRM, Flamers, LongBows etc. etc. to the limited hardpoints and then simply aim and shoot. What exactly would an experience points system add to that?

Man I had such high hopes for this game but, now I'm seriously worried.

I'd have loved to see this as a single player RPG too, I loved the first infocom battletech game on the amiga and have always regretted not getting to play the sequel.

I read the entire IGN article and there's not one single mention of motion capture in it. Someone at EG needs to pay closer attention.

Could someone pinch me? I think that I fell into alternate rality last night somehow, where things are much better...first mechwarrior news (and coming back in a form I support fully, instead of some arcadey shootout with orbs, at that) and then team 17 coming back with remake of alien breed...

Come to think of that, don't pinch me. I don't want to wake up :)

Don't you see? They are building an army of mechs to take over the world with, and they will use live footage to motion capture them. Hehe.

Seriously though, I think the roleplay element might work similar to mech commander 2, where your pilots were gaining ranks, and could learn new skills with each rank making them better at specific tasks. For example, you could make one better at piloting light mechs, using light lasers and short ranged missiles, which means that person, while piloting light mech will have much easier time moving and evading enemy fire, and accuracy with chosen weapons goes up also. It worked in mech commander 2, so the potential is there. Of course, it depends on the implementation, so far they didn't say anything really.

Thank you very, very much for this link :)
If it's indicative of the game, it's finally real mechwarrior game I was waiting ages for :) Mechs move like mechs instead of gundam suits, and it just has the proper mech feel.

Hopefully after microsoft squandered the setting, now it's going to be restored :)
Strangely though, the new trailer looks similar to the one from mechwarrior 3, a game I really enjoyed..
