New ME2 costumes tomorrow

For Jack, Thane and Garrus.

BioWare's offering a new set of costumes for Mass Effect 2 tomorrow alongside the known-about Firewalker DLC.

This Alternate Appearance Pack costs 160 Microsoft Points (£1.36/€1.86) on Xbox 360 and 160 BioWare Points (£1.23) on PC, and brings spring outfits for Jack, Garrus and Thane.

The colour palette is still black and grey, but Jack looks sleek in a new visor and Thane personifies cool with some shades.

Tomorrow's Firewalker DLC brings the hovering Hammerhead tank into play. This, unlike the costumes, will be free, and offer-up five new Hammerhead-suitable missions.

Seems weird to pay for these, which have no inherent value added, and get a vehicle and a few new missions tomorrow for free.

Still, just because it's not for me doesn't mean it's like that for everyone.

Haven't picked this back up since getting stuck on a certain part of a certain ship on insanity. Looks like I'll be knocking that difficulty down what with the dlc coming out.

Edit : only just noticed you have to pay for these. Seems odd when a major dlc component is free but something as trivial as costumes arn't.

Costumes paid for but Hammerhead free (via retail), a strange situation dont you think?! That a much looked forward to DLC is free and another a common complaint of what makes a poor DLC. Horse armour/pastels changes be costed DLC?
  • ZuluHero #4 2 years ago

There is something telling in the way that they give away far better content through the cerberus network, yet charge 160 points for something as trivial as this.
  • andywilkie35 #5 2 years ago

I'm disappointed, I thought we'd be getting horse armour for Jack.
  • the_dudefather #6 2 years ago

I'm sure I've seen the glasses Jack wears before...
  • comissars_handgun #7 2 years ago

Aww I wanted new outfits for Shepherd to wear on the Normandy, I don't really like any of the ones provided.
  • dr_faulk #8 2 years ago

Do I really want to spend €2 on shades for a videogame character? Get real.
  • Xerx3s #9 2 years ago

Horse armour! I thought that they specifically said that they wouldn't do it. How nice.

    Black is the new alternate.
  • The_Inquisitor #11 2 years ago

The thing is, you don't get much opportunity to see the outfits anyway because most of the time the characters are trailing behind you or you're too busy aiming down your sight to notice.
  • Fatbobbybob #12 2 years ago

Does anyone know how this dlc will work if you've already done the relay jump that starts the end of the game?

@GamesConnoisseur: While I think the price for this DLC is the most it should be, I agree that it is odd - skins cost money while a vehicle pack is free. It's better than the seemingly full retail price for the Dragon Age Awakening DLC at least (£31!).

There does need to be DLC with an extended (tiny casual conversation spoiler) session of Mordin singing GILBERT AND SULLIVAN though.
  • Yargh #14 2 years ago

We'd been waiting and now someone has delivered: something even worse than horse armour.
  • udat #15 2 years ago

I am struggling to think of anything more pointless. You don't even have the nice elevator rides to give you a few moments to appreciate your party's outfits any more.

All the alternate costumes were a bit weak in ME2, in fact most of them seemed to just be pallete swaps of the originals. Luckliy the rest of the game kicked ass.

Same! And yes, charging for these uninspiring wardrobe changes is disappointing.
  • Darren #17 2 years ago

Costume packs which aren't free... hmmm... do they only change the look of the characters or do they offer extra health/armour etc. as they did for Shepard? If it's the former then they're not worth it IMO even at just over a quid.

Glad to see that the good stuff is still free though. The best game of 2010 so far seems to be getting some of the best DLC and most of it is free. How can you grumble at that?
  • Darren #18 2 years ago

@udat - Mass Effect 2 does have a lot of cutscenes though and each character has their own plot thread and conversation bits on the Normandy so there'll be ample opportunity to admire these new costume packs even outside of the gameplay itself.
  • Darren #19 2 years ago

The new Jack costume looks like someone has stuck a strip of black masking tape across her eyes!

  • Syrette #20 2 years ago

    Horse armour-tastic.
  • muscleblade #21 2 years ago

    @Fatbobbybob

Doesnt matter. Its just side missons added on your galaxy map.
  • Lukus #22 2 years ago

    Who buys this shit?
  • DanMW #23 2 years ago

    No for me, thanks.
  • TeaFiend #24 2 years ago

So you need to pay real money to get Garrus to fix his armour?
  • Moribundman #25 2 years ago

I'll buy this. Completist that I am (have both preorder sets of armour, CE kit AND Sniper Rifle thanks to PC and 360 purchases, plus the Dr Pepper visors/helmets due to a work around on Destructoid that allows non-US types to get them all free).

It's only as bad as avatar clothes really... But these outfits (much like the secondary sets in the main game) should offer armour/stat bonuses or at least a substantial cosemetic difference...
  • Moribundman #26 2 years ago

Hammerhead missions are a fan service they always intended to give away for free but hadn't fully implemented at launch. As things stand they add even more value to Cerberus Network.

As I understand it, Kasumi will be paid-for DLC and not CN content. From now on, they should (and probably will) release armour and weapons via CN and more substantial content as seperate packs. As of the Hammerhead missions they will have already released enough content for free to make the Cerberus Network (proportionally) better value than Awakenings...

I alone in saying ME2 was a massive dissapointment?

Not alone - I've yet to finish it, whereas I finished the first game in a weekend - but there are very few people that I've seen that would agree.

Personally I missed the RPG tropes that were gutted - inventory, exploration, customisation etc. but most people seem to agree those are all improvements.

Edit: and regarding this DLC - yes, it's as bad as horse armour, which at the time was so bad it became a meme. Now paid content like that is so common it's not even worth laughing at anymore.

Huh? It is the other way around.
  • Seabeast #30 2 years ago

I really enjoyed ME2 and If ME3 has more rpg elements like the original then we will have the perfect game. What did annoy me was the fact that Shepards helmet was always on, which made the chat scenes quite annoying. I had the special Dragon Armour from my DA:o game and only used it for 20 mins because of this.
  • deadmonkeyuk #31 2 years ago

Mass Effect 2 has had some great free DLC including a new character, missions and items, and a soon to be released vehicle mission pack.

It does seem all future DLC for ME2 will be payed. If it is new missions and characters, I will hand over my MS points. But I think it is strange the release payed character outfits so long after the games release.

Agree with Seabeast if only Shepard took her/his helmet off during dialogue, I would have used the special armour much more.

    @zandergrin and ignatiusjreilly

I'm with you. I loved ME1, I think I played it 3 or 4 times, but ME2 just doesn't do it for me. I used to like changing ammo and mods on mine and my squads guns for each situation, and seeing stats for weapons I can equip. I liked finding things everywhere too, I hardly find anything in this version. Except fucking heatsinks, whoever decided to limit ammo in this game should be hung up by thier balls.
I hate that planet scanning too, it's more boring than the Mako, driving your little ship around the galaxy map is also rubbish, and the shitty wireframe loading screens are much less interesting than moving the camera around your squad to look at Tali's arse when in the elevator.

I don't think it's a bad game, it's just that ME1 was an easy 10/10, but so far this is struggling to get past a 7 for me.
  • ignatiusjreilly #33 2 years ago

Agree with Seabeast if only Shepard took her/his helmet off during dialogue

It was amusing in the bar scenes too - somehow I poisoned myself by splashing a drink over the front of my helmet.

@Bob'sUncle: To me it felt like instead of improving the things people thought were weak in the first game, they just got rid of them. Nothing much to find on planets? Get rid of the planets! Awkward inventory management? Get rid of the inventory! Guns were too similar? You only get one gun! When they said they'd addressed the problems of the first game that is not what I thought they meant...

I think you missed the point of the alternative costumes. They weren't "something different to wear at the weekend". The point was that they all matched each other. Your rag-tag bunch of guns for hire, assassins, crazy doctors and woman-with-a-nice-arse became a team, with a uniform.
  • Pastici #36 2 years ago

One of the helmets helps with dialog though ;).

Don't like it don't buy it.

Paid costumes have been around for years, no surprise. Sackboys have them all the time.

I wish we'd get a "go to the beach" pack with beach and Miranda in bikini:D
    Edited by 1 at 22/03/10 @ 13:51
  • BobsUncle #39 2 years ago

    @Menage

I'm using a female Shepard, so a 'go to the beach' pack would get my money.

p.s. I'm working on some girl on girl action with Miranda, who I only take on missions because I love the shiny black PVC suit she wears.
  • menage #40 2 years ago

Mine's female too:D. Always has been, dont like watching a dudes ass for 40 hours, and the voice acting is way better.'

(still wakes up horrified in middle of night thinking about MGS4, the ass part, not the voiceacting)
    Edited by 1 at 22/03/10 @ 13:58
  • BobsUncle #41 2 years ago

But MGS4 did have plenty of gratuitous crotch and cleavage shots of the fit woman boss people.
  • Beano #42 2 years ago

I think the costume pack is a testing baloon for the upcoming Kasumi pack which will arrive in april. I love ME2 but I can only recommend people NOT to buy the costumers - otherwise the Kasumi pack pricing will be higher.

playing through me2 now for the 5th or 6th time. It really only shines on insanity!

Anyway, why the fuss of a cosmetic change for some characters. I can never understand why people feel the urge to complain about these things. They are clearly meant to be something fun. It won't impact your game having the new costumes, nor will not having the new costumes impact your game.

Overall, the 10 dollar project on ME2 has been very rewarding.
  • Retroid #45 2 years ago

  • BobsUncle #46 2 years ago

    NOOOOOOOooooooo!

Don't tell me I'll never get the lezzo scene with Miranda! I really don't want to have to screw Garrus.

You could do it in ME1 with Liara, don't make this another reason that ME1 was better.
  • sneetch #47 2 years ago

Oh, I thought these were avatar outfits for a second. Kinda surprised they're not.
  • sneetch #48 2 years ago

    @commissar\'s_handgun
Aww I wanted new outfits for Shepherd to wear on the Normandy, I don't really like any of the ones provided.

If we go by the way a friend of mine plays the game the only appropriate costume would be a bath robe that doesn't quite close. ;)
  • Moribundman #49 2 years ago

Marked down a hell of a lot for saying I'll reluctantly get this and observing the current direction of the DLC without expressing an opinion! Do people use a coin to decide -/+?

I am indeed *this close* to boycotting this, since Bioware have stated they intend to listen closely to fan feedback since they merged with EA and adjust strategies to suit. Current releases for DA:o and Mass Effect 2 have been OK to excellent in terms of quality... This is a rip off when you can get a whole new character plus loyalty mission, research and weapon for 3 times the price...
  • dloob #50 2 years ago

    @sneetch
That's just your twisted interpretation . It's not just all fun and games in my Cmdr Shepard's love loft.
Serious galaxy saving needs to be done too.

As for the DLC, not for me.
Good to see Jack put some clothes on, it would make the trip under the stairs less scary.
  • GaryHoward #51 2 years ago

Tempted...but I only have 595 MS points and that is reserved for the Kasumi dlc. The costumes are nice, but it should have been free via Cerberus Network.
  • AphoticCosmos #52 2 years ago

Why does Jack now look like Geordi LaForge?
  • Lamb #53 2 years ago

Bad, bad EA! They could have cross licensed it with Sunglass Hut and made it free. ROFLMAO
