New look for Wii iPlayer News

Wii PlayStation 3 News by Oli Welsh

28 October, 2008

The BBC has redesigned its iPlayer video streaming service for the Nintendo Wii.

The service has been available on the Wii for six months now, but only working through the standard iPlayer website design, which is too large to fit comfortably on the Wii's browser display.

The new version is optimised for the Wii's display resolution and pointer control, with a simplified interface and larger buttons.

You can see screenshots and read more about it in a blog by developer Anthony Rose on the BBC website.

You can even sample the navigation on your computer by going to BigScreen version of iPlayer.

One of the major problems with the previous version of iPlayer on Wii was that it was impossible to play back in full-screen mode. The new version is "designed with that in mind", taking you automatically to a much larger, non-windowed playback display.

However, the BBC has not been able to improve the video streaming quality over the original version. "That's not ideal - but, alas, the Wii ships with Flash 7 which uses the older Sorenson Spark codec that gives lower video compression and poorer quality than the more recent On2 VP6 and H.264 codecs used in later versions of Flash found on your PC," said Rose.

"We're very much looking forward to better quality video options on these devices - stay tuned for possible further developments on this front over the coming months," he added.

As a footnote, Rose added that a PS3 version of iPlayer was in the works.

"We're also working on bringing BBC iPlayer to Sony PS3, but we're not quite there yet as the PS3 uses a slightly older version of Flash which doesn't support some of the features used in our media player, and the very promising Flash 9 update now available on PS3 has some compatibility issues," he said.

I was thinking the same, why does it take so long to get it working when one geek in his bedroom only needs a night too?

Hopefully they'll include the ability to download on the official PS3 version.

@GiarcYekrub: Nope, but it would be great to see it on the 360 (if only as a replacement for Netflix)

Cool. I've used it on the Wii a couple of months ago. It'll be nice to get things improved. I'm looking forward to the improved quality that Flash 9 can bring to the PS3 version. Hooray for this kind of thing!

I think that such a thing in the past would not have been possible on the 360 but with the channels layout it should be easy for them to integrate it.

I thought the PS3 2.50 & Flash 9 update would improve things but I get an error that I don't have JavaScript enabled, when I do. Arses. The 360 really needs a browser to keep up. Although it'd be based on IE :(

The Xbox version may not happen simply because MS wanted too much control over look and feel.

How hard can it be to update the Wii so that it uses the latest version of Flash?? Is there some massive technical limitation preventing this or are Nintendo just a bunch of lazy cunts?

I think it's some kind of licencing issue for the latest version of Flash intergration, wereas the older Flash 7 version is free. I could be wrong but I think I read that on the Opera forums way back when the Wii Browser launched. Still it would be great to see the browser updated with a newer version of Flash, etc, and some other tweaks, since they have updated it twice since in launched although the last update was ages ago.

That could be right actually. Even the flash player is only free for personal use on PCs etc. Companies have to obtain a license.

That's essentially how Adobe make their money from Flash, so Nintendo would likely have to stump up some cash.

Still, they're not exactly short of the stuff at the moment, so come on Nintendo!

Thanks guys. I guess I had naively considered Flash to be free, since it is for personal use. What a fool!

There's Flash Lite 3 which doesn't cost any licensing fees and is supposedly compatible with Flash 9 code.

Does the DSi have Flash?
