New GTA IV telly ad now showing

Xbox boss jumping up and down.

A new TV advert for the Xbox 360 version of Grand Theft Auto IV is now showing on Xbox.com.

It's all part of a big old marketing campaign Microsoft is running, said to be on the same scale as the one they did for Halo 3. The new commercial will start appearing on tellies this weekend and you can expect to see lots of ads in the "lifestyle" press.

Xbox UK boss Steve McGill sounds so excited about the whole thing he might be sick, you know because of the graphics and Live and multiplayer and achievements and downloadable content and everything.

"Microsoft sees GTA IV as a fantastic title to showcase how great Xbox 360 is. What with its amazing graphics and gaming experience, coupled with playing with your friends on Xbox Live, achievements and of course the exclusive extra episodic content for GTA IV that will be downloadable this autumn and will only be available on Xbox 360," he said.

"As such you can expect a large awareness campaign from us, showcasing how great GTA IV on Xbox 360 is, and what great value the Xbox 360 console is too."

McGill went on, "Reviews of the game are now coming in and it’s getting a fantastic response, and the press are highlighting how massive the Xbox 360 exclusive downloadable content will be and how easy and great it is to play multiplayer with friends over Xbox Live.

"We’re naturally very excited about GTA IV coming to Xbox 360, we know pre-orders are going fabulously well and we know consumers are extremely excited about all the great things the Xbox 360 version offers." Possibly not as excited as you, sir.

Grand Theft Auto IV is out on Xbox 360 on April 29th. And on PlayStation 3, though McGill didn't mention that.

    I may be a 360 owner, but MS needs to spend more money making good first-party titles rather than advertising others.
  • Dizzy #6 4 years ago

    Rather good that one.

    They will probably do this again at Xmas for GTA Complete version.

    If that is all ingame I am impressed.

    Must be nice for the console makers clambering over each other to advertise your game for you.
  • david78 #8 4 years ago

    Rockstar must be laughing their heads off with all the money they're getting from MS over a game that isn't even theirs.
    I'm guessing the sales will only be slightly in favour of the 360 version, despite having it shoved down our throats by MS how their version is better.

    Intrusive MS achievements? Yeah, ok. You're wrong. But it's ok.

    Dude.. this is common.

    Gears of War? Big games get pushed bigtime. They make lot's of money on the amount of games that are printed by the publisher. So if you promise to promote, the publisher will order more hence making you money and selling your hardware.

    Besides.. you know the 360 version will be better :) You will read in here on EG :)

    "Intrusive MS achievements? Yeah, ok. You're wrong. But it's ok. "

    its funny how after all is said and done the ps3 version will easily outsell the 360 version in europe. oh microsoft.
  • david78 #14 4 years ago

    @Dizzy

    Yeah, but that was being published by MS exclusive;y for the 360, whereas this isn't.
    I just find it funny how obsessed Microsoft are by it, but I just don't think they're gonna knock the PS3 version into oblivion. It'll probably be something like 60/40 in favour of the 360.
  • Kayj #15 4 years ago

    PS3 version for me too.
  • Dizzy #16 4 years ago

    "It'll probably be something like 60/40 in favour of the 360. "

    60/40 is maybe 6 million vs 4 million sold. That is 2 million times X (15 euro?) amount licensing for MS. Worth it? You tell me.

    "I may be a 360 owner, but MS needs to spend more money making good first-party titles rather than advertising others."

    @ Erasor - are you kidding? MS first party titles have higher metacritic scores than any other publisher on the Xbox. Think about PGR, Halo, Gears, Mass Effect, Forza - these are all fantastic, successful franchises.
  • Widge #18 4 years ago

    I saw Halo 3 adverts, pretty heavy on Sky too. Not seen too much in recent months for the 360 though. The end of last year was quite a Rachet & Clank and Uncharted assault as far as ads go.
  • Mashum #19 4 years ago

    ..PS3 version for me also, but only because I still haven't been bothered to send back the smoking wreckage of my 360.

    From past multiformat titles I would kind of expect this to be better on the 360. It will be interesting to see any comparison.

    Well...lets wait for the inevitable 10/10 pure,honest and 'objective' review of Eurogamer. ;)

    I think people should look at the bigger image, do you really want to support a company known for its monopoly and anti-open source schemes ? if you are alright with that and with been charged for online play...then by all means get a 360 for this.

    I think any person with a sense of responsibility should vote with there Euro (sorry UK :p ) against this selfish-logic, when i buy a game i buy the online-component with it, i (pay) for the game bearing in mind that it has an online component, why should be charged for this ? and why should anyone encourage this ? this is an obvious lack of awareness from the public.

    now excuse me....i,l take a few more cups ;)

  • Kryon #23 4 years ago

    Hmm, Microsoft actually bothering to advertise this game (and the advantages the 360 version offers) is definitely a bad thing for Sony. I do think that without said advertisement, GTAIV would have possibly sold better on/with the PS3 simply because of peoples ignorance regarding the cheaper/probably better offering from MS.

    I wonder if/when there will be a PC version..?

    Not that I particularly care - 360 on day one for me!

    "i (pay) for the game bearing in mind that it has an online component, why should be charged for this ? and why should anyone encourage this ?"

    Hmmm. If I compare PS3's free online service with Microsoft's Gold subscription service, I think it's pretty obvious what you get for £4 a month. Namely, a well-implemented and stress-free (99% of the time) online service that is a superbly integrated part of the platform.

    To such an extent that I bought the "technically superior" PS3 version of Burnout Paradise and quickly exchanged it for the 360 version because, frankly, the Xbox online experience is so much better than the PS3's.

    I'm getting tired of people equating 360 owners as those with brains and PS3 owners as those without.

    Seems to me the clever choice is PS3 right now: free multiplayer for GTA, rechargeable controller, no need to buy extra wireless adaptor, better future game prospects (not better current catalogue, but you can't have everything) and Bluray.

    I'll take GTA on PS3 please!

    Every shop i've been in (In Ireland) and i mean EVERY shop i've been in that will be selling GTA IV has had a sea of POS displays with 360 logo's and mentions of the DLC exclusivity everywhere, not a sign of the PS3 anywhere, though i did see some PS3 display cases.

    MS might just crab the new bunch purchasing their consoles for GTA IV. The cheapest entry point to the current gen and all...

    Edit: Yes MS has officially confirmed "crab's with every purchase of new console and GTA IV!"

    Vote now for free online-gaming, it is pathetic that i need to pay to be allowed to use the online component of my purchased software, which is part of the game package and part of the decision why i bought the game. its hilarious to pay for it.

    Vote for your rights with your Euro (or pounds :p ).....this isnt about how much as much it is about principle.

    would you allow someone to force you to pay 1 cent per-day to use your console ? sure the amount is nothing....but.

    I'm getting the x360 version, because I haven't bothered with a PS3*, but I don't really care whether MS or Sony gets the lion's share from GTA IV, as long as the game itself is all it's cranked up to be...

    *yet??? Depends on the strength of its exclusives to be honest and, while Drake and Ratchet & Clank are tempting, it will take more titles to convince me... Maybe MGS4 will do the trick...

    Actually..according to MS in a magazine the DLC will be 10 hours long, and it wont be free either, way too over-hyped for just 10 hours. and it will be in the same city more like extra missions.

    i,l try fetching the link later, i,m occupied right now ;)
  • bad09 #52 4 years ago

    @Madlax

    That's 10 hours that the PS3 version hasn't got. :)

    Who said it was free? Anyone thinking it would be free is deluded.
  • Lukus #53 4 years ago

    Just watched it. Well, I say "watched", just despite it being a video from an official Microsoft source and playing it in Media Player, it's compression is totally messed up. Green everywhere and stupid borders all over the frame.
  • ronuds #54 4 years ago

    @Madlax

    If that were true, why would anybody bother publishing this new rumor? It could only be 10 hours of gameplay time to beat whatever new missions are added, but that doesn't mean those new missions can't be set in a new city.

    I'm not saying I believe the rumor, but it's a possibility.
    Edited by ronuds at 17/04/08 @ 18:04
  • Madlax #55 4 years ago

    Apparently it was OXM who said it would be 10 hours long, way too short and over-rated even if it was free, i,d still take free online over it anyday ;)

    The problem is that its not free, and you can kiss the new-city thing good bye that would cost way too much development time and resources and all for what ? just for 10 hours ? its not like they were given 50 million....they were (Loaned) 50 million in reality all the money will go back to Microsoft.

    Didnt you ask yourselves ? if the DLC content were so huge and significant then why not publicly talk about it ? simply its just a bullet point to wave against the PS3 version, in reality the DLC will be 10 hours of extra missions in the very same city. which is hardly a deal-breaker.

    In my humble opinion....people should vote for (Free) online, it is your right to take the piece of software you purchased online without any additional costs. accept nothing less than what you deserve.

    Having free online beats any fake advantage that wishes to kill this (right) of ours ;)
  • speedsix #56 4 years ago

    Do you know what I reeeeally love? I love the fact that GTA always was a Playstation 'thing' yet now it's been confirmed the 360 version gets exclusive episodic content ($50mil episodic content no less) and the PS3 fanboys are absolutely livid they almost can't contain their envy.

    Look at vercetti101's post for a prime example, it's hilarious, he is quite clearly a very angry young man. Makes me smile I tell thee :)
  • bad09 #57 4 years ago

    @Madlax

    10 extra hours of GTA4 is a deal breaker for me :)

    As for free online? only PS3 guys bark on about that. Most Live users actually think is good value, which it is.

  • XdarXideX #60 4 years ago

    Wait so 10 hours of missions and activities means it's NOT going to be a new island? Sorry.. I didn't know the free roaming was on a meter!

    Regardless of whether it is a new play-area or not it's still going to be worthwhile (even though the statement made by Microsoft billed it as bigger and better than your usual DLC - So I don't see how it will simply be just new missions).
  • barchetta #61 4 years ago

    Wasn't there a rumour of a PS3/GTA IV bundle coming up? If so this is kind of smart by MS - getting its shots in first - even though it does state game and console sold separately it is a pretty powerful subliminal link between the 360 and GTA IV.
  • dredd97 #62 4 years ago

    well both versions are identical according to rockstar, the ps3 has a manditory hdd install and the 360 has an optional hdd install.. early reviews claim that the 360 suffers from slight texture 'pop-in' without the hdd install.. but we'll all find out on the 29th

    so there's nothing to see here, move along...
  • wewillselfdestruct #63 4 years ago

    Sam Houser said in an interview in last month's Edge that the DLC was very unlikely to be something like a new island, but rather ideas like you could be walking around the city when an NPC comes up to you and asks you to help them with something. TBH I think that sounds like a great way of implementing DLC in a sandbox game like this, but it ain't quite a new island. Although in some ways, I'd say it sounds better...

    And as this thread has rapidly descended into another "my console is better than your console" willy waving contest, just allow me to say that I don't own a 360 and will therefore be buying the PS3 version. And I'm not sore about missing out on the DLC either. Can we at least all agree that the Wii is a gimmick with predominently terrible third party support? Why can't we all just... get along?!
  • WinterSnowblind #64 4 years ago

    @dredd97

    I'l be getting the PS3 version as its the only console i have.
    I'll never support a console manufacturer who doesnt have the backbone to recall their product after the 16-30% failure rates. Thats just pathetic.
    If it was any other company they would put their customers first, recall and fix the problems ASAP.

    The DLC content wont be anything that big. It took Rockstar 3-4 years to develop GTA4 with 1 city and u think you're gonna get an entire new city in a DLC?
    When u have 60+ hrs in the main game another 10 hrs isnt that much especially in a freeform game like GTA.

    Roll on 29th April PS and GTA are back in business :)

  • stepneg #66 4 years ago

    It's going to be better on 360 the review will confirm that I'm sure, the extra content is a bonus to buy if its good but the deal breaker is xbox live. If the multiplayer is as good as it sounds its going to be better on live.
  • Calgon #67 4 years ago

    I REALLY hope its a whole new island you can tell the Sonybots are dreading the thought of that haha! :D

    Heres a thought they actually have to sell this content so stop downplaying it... if they plan on selling the content and spent so much making it, then expect something pretty substancial.

    The lengths some people will go to, to convince themselves they dont want something out of stubbourness rather than logical reasoning is pretty funny. This gen we've seen a complete turn around, the same critisisms that applied to Xbox which the Sonybots gave gleefully to the Xbots now applies to the PS3... its a bigger console, less games, costs more and it doesnt even have the advantage Xbox had of being:

    a) Clearly more powerfull,
    b) The first console that made proper use of a harddrive,
    c) The first decent online service for a console.

    Ah the hypocrisy might have angered me but knowing some of these Sonybots personally, it makes me smile as I always knew they were full of it ... "the ms is teh evil I heards"(thats all its ever been, these people know hardly anything about MS more often than not and would flat out deny the dangers Sony hold for the industry... we dont want either MS or Sony controlling the market, I say especially not Sony they will slow it down as they have always done and overcharge and mess developers around ect).

    Shit, we've been rumbled. Yes, i'm so envious i intend to smash up my PS3 in a fit of rage later.... ;)

    Why is it if you only own one console these days you are branded a fanboy? Like the user i quoted, he uses the word 'Fanboy' as a insult, yet seems to be blissfully unaware that he is being one himself.

    Oh, and the word Sonybot? Just like the term Xbot, its Pathetic.

  • krudd #69 4 years ago

    That ad is very boring! Would be more exciting, probably, to someone that hasn't been watching every GTA IV in the last few months!

    Anyways about the DLC I'm not interested at the moment! I'm still dying to play the main game!! People already forgot that that is the big chunk of what it is we're all drooling over?? Maybe when I've played the full game to death the DLC will appeal to me but I'll cross that bridge when I get there!
  • wewillselfdestruct #70 4 years ago

    "I REALLY hope its a whole new island you can tell the Sonybots are dreading the thought of that haha!"

    I don't know if I count as a Sonybot but I'm not going to worry too much about it because it isn't going to be a new island. For the reasons I mentioned before. But also as I said before, I actually think what Sam Houser was suggesting is in many ways more exciting. Something that adds more depth to a game that is already bound to have more hidden depths than 99.9% of us will ever truly discover sounds like a better, more organic way of expanding a game than "oh look - that bridge that's been broken all this time has been repaired so now you can get to that other island that was previously and inexplicably inaccessible by boat".

    Anyway, each console has it's strengths. No doubt the catalogue of available games on 360 is more appealing to many people at the moment, but then it's been out for a year longer than the PS3 so if that wasn't the case then MS would have had to have done something seriously wrong. Like not include a hard drive as standard. Or use a game storage medium that limits developers to less than 9GB. Or neglect to properly test their system before unleashing it upon the public.

    "Oh no you di'nt!"

    Oh yes I did.

    But just because I don't want to end by baiting people, allow me to say that people who own 360s are my friends. Because competition brings down prices and is therefore a good thing for me and all you other consumers. So thank you friends! Perhaps we should all realise that we actually need each other rather than constantly berating each other with an alarming lack of punctuation.

    Good ad.

    [Goes into hibernation until 29th]

    EDIT: @wewillselfdestruct +1 and the best constructed post I've read in a long time. When gaming is facing a barrage of completely unjustifiable criticisms from a society that is too lazy to admit its own failures, why the hell are we bickering? We should be standing firm in defence of gaming and show that it truly does bring people together rather than drive them apart.

    Uh-huh, 'cause Sony's track record in putting the consumer first is spotless isn't it?

    Sony is a large company who shits on the customer from time to time like any other big company. But MS is vastly bigger than Sony, so when they shit on the customer, its 100 x worse. Don't compare like for like. If MS get the monopoly in the console world they hunger for, and have lost countless billions to attain, your games will be detrimentally affected forever more.

    I'm kind of considering buying the PS3/GTAIV bundle but I'm a bit apprehensive. €400 seems to be the price although I haven't checked any retailers in Ireland yet. Generally they tac on an extra €20/€30 over here just for a laugh. My brother has a 360 and the noise of the fan added to the fact he's had to have it replaced has turned me away from it. There seems to be a lot of speculation about frame-rate issues for this game with the PS3 version being a mystery so maybe it would be better if I held off till after the release before I drop €430. Of course by then they'll be out of stock. :/

    @Confounder

    You have no idea what you're talking about, huh? Maybe you should try making a list.

    1. The 360 has a lot more games than the PS3, which instantly = better variety

    2. The PS3 actually has more FPS than the 360 does, assuming you're counting three of Sony's big games this year, Resistance 2, Killzone 2 and Haze. How many FPS are coming to the 360 this year? I'll leave you to figure that out.
  • elvenscroll #75 4 years ago

    @Wintersnowblind

    "1. The 360 has a lot more games than the PS3, which instantly = better variety"

    Fairly obvious it has more games, considering it beens out a year longer than the PS3. ;)
  • bad09 #76 4 years ago

    "What makes me smile is people saying Xbox360 is value for money. What a joke! Sure, it has some great FPS but value for money it ain't."

    I laughed heartily at this comment, you can really feel the love from the Sony fanboys today! :)

  • TheNinkyNonk #77 4 years ago

    And here's me thinking it was nigh on impossible for a man to suck his own cock
  • ronuds #78 4 years ago

    I'd equate "value for the money" from a games console to be the games console that gives me the most and best games for the price, no? Is a games console not supposed to be for playing games?

    So let's see then:

    360 = cheapest console + most games + best online + most varied selection of current titles

    Yeah, I'd say that's value for the money.

    Now the PS3:

    PS3 = most expensive + least # of games + band-aided online + 3 decent exclusives

    Oh, but it also plays blu-ray!

    /flame suit + coat = me leaving! :)

    So this is where MSs marketing budget went to?
    No wonder they haven't been able to advertise anything since halo 3.

    "The new commercial will start appearing on tellies this weekend "

    Started tonight, due to the amazingly crap quality of non hd sky it didnt look all that good.

    As for which version I will be getting, both. Why? Because I can, and this weekend I will be trying to figure out which controller is easier to use with my feet
  • GamesConnoisseur #81 4 years ago

    Sigh!

    Cant you lads just accept that whoever is going to get GTAIV will be getting it on the system they prefer or only owns, and either will be damn great with perhaps only so slight advantages/disadvantages (better online matchmaking, hdd caching etc) GTAIV will lord over our gaming time and make a massive cultural impact larger than most games over the past year (perhaps except for Wii Fit which would features in daytime chat show etc).

    Watch the spaces and I m looking forward to proper head to head of X360 and PS3 on EG (also in ign.com).

    ...by the way I m getting X360 version!

    Though I will not make any judgement of anyone getting PS3 version, so I just hope that Sony fanboys would allow me and others the enjoyment I will get on X360 and vice versa. After all head to head is not yet up and Rockstar have said again and again both will be very nigh identical.

    I picked up OXM UK whilst in Kings Cross on way home and claimed world first review and gave score of 10/10 and said its the most perfect GTA by far, great online multiplayer too.

    So just goddamn look forward to the game and quit cussing!

    Both formats will be great! As for me it's PS3 because more neighbors have 360's. So swapping game nights is fun. To the hype about the DLC & live support that's great for Xboxers but please remember PSN is in its infancy & in due time PSN will compare closely with LIVE. Really we should all rally together and NOT buy into DLC that should come with games these days from the start. (apply milking technique) My guess is DLC will come for PS3 just at a much later date, till then I'll have Metal Gear 4, Haze, Little Big Planet, Resistance 2, Fallout 3, that should hold me over till then.
    Forgot to mention the achievements sounds a plus for XboxLive but PSN is suppose to have a trophy system implemented into "Home" when it finally launches this year. Cheers

    @Seafort

    Why would you own a PS3 with Sony not really doing shit about the infamous "disc read errors" in the PS2? At least MS fixes the 360's for free. Why does everyone magically forget about Sony and their bullshit when talking about evil corporations?

    not getting all uppity at you directly, but I find the comment about "oh and it plays BLURAY" that crops up time and time again bizarre? It comes from others too. Is this a massive problem?

    I got my PS3 the second I discovered I could transcode and stream media using TVersity (and now DivX is a bonus), I've been dying for a streaming media device, and a good one at that, for ages. Bung into that the fact I can now take advantage of my HDTV with bluray, being a 60GB owner can play my PS2 games AND get stuck into the PS3 games. I mean its totally win for me, I'm loving the hook up with the PSP too. The bizarre, but what about the games, comment is also ridiculous. I've had to put off playing the likes of Burnout, Assassins Creed, Call Of Duty 4 etc because I have too much to play. Also no problems with the online from my perspective, I find playing the likes of Warhawk more stable than when I had to sit through endless "Host disconnected" blue screens in Halo 2. Being free is a lovely bonus.

    The console is the best option, for me, esp since I've got a laptop which plays all the 360 games that I find intriguing.

    Now this is the point, I'm sure we've all got the console, that for our reasons, is the absolute mutts nuts. No amount of baton waving will persuade us otherwise. And why are we even bothering to bicker? Its a totally media driven thing to stir up a constant bubble of PR, they are the ones who drew the lines in the so called battle. Sit down with your console, play your games and enjoy, if you're sitting there having a blast, job done.

    Nice ad.

    For the UK they should of had Niko saying in a Brum accent whilst walking along "its brilliant"

  • ronuds #87 4 years ago

    @Widge

    Well, I was mostly joking, but if there was a point in that statement it was that having blu-ray makes the PS3 no more valuable as a "games console" than by not having it. By no means is there anything bad about having it, though. I was responding to someone who said earlier that the 360 offers no value for the money.

  • Drumstix #88 4 years ago

    I thought blu-ray (single layer) held up to 25gig and rumours of a new blu-ray that would hold up to 100gig. With games getting larger maps, more dialog, & full HD (sound & video) I think it's very important that PS3 has blu-ray. What's Xbox to do?, use flash memory, multiple discs, or massive DLC that you gotta pay for extra? For the record I own both latest consoles, and HAD live for 2 years & cross game chat WAS the only thing worth a damn. I understand there's movies / TV now... but you gotta pay for extra for each don't ya? Anyway PSN is slowly evolving & playTV is comming soon along with Home w/trophies, so it'll even out in time.
