New Eurogamer Portugal site launches News

PC PlayStation 2 GameCube Xbox GameBoy Advance PSOne Dreamcast PSP DS Xbox 360 Gizmondo Mobile PlayStation 3 Wii Retro
News by Ellie Gibson

21 May, 2008

Following the successful launches of Eurogamer Germany and Eurogamer France, Eurogamer Network has announced the launch of Eurogamer Portugal. It's like Risk, but real life!

The site is now up and running over at Eurogamer.pt. It's being published in partnership with LusoPlay, a leading gaming community in Portugal which was established by Tiago Silva in 2006. LusoPlay will be merged into Eurogamer.pt as part of the deal.

"We were very impressed with the success Tiago and his team achieved with LusoPlay," said Eurogamer managing director Rupert Loman, pushing things around a map with a big stick.

"Their expertise in the Portuguese gaming market and community, combined with the Eurogamer brand, reach, technology and infrastructure, mean Eurogamer.pt will quickly become the leading video game content site in Portugal."

Silva added, "I'm really happy to be part of Eurogamer. It has always been my favourite videogames website and it is regarded as one of the most important videogames websites around the world." Come on in, sir. "It's a pleasure to join the family. We are planning to make Eurogamer the best Portuguese-language videogames website ever."

Meanwhile, Eurogamer will not rest until either everyone in the world likes us as much as Tiago or we're all dead. It's not going too badly at the moment - last month more than 2.1 million unique users paid us a visit. Thanks, unique users! And bem vindo, new Portuguese friends!

I'm portuguese, so I guess it answers evils question.

But, really, no. As most not-so-developed countries, Portugal mainly sees video-games=playstation.

I'm happy with the portuguese site so far.

PS and XBox are treated equally in all of their news stories too.

evilfoxhound, actually, 90% of all current consoles in Portugal are Sony. Yuppi :| GC and Xbox were almost nowhere to be found in stores, and even nowadays Playstation brand is the only known console brand by parents. We are a very very ungifted country in matters of technology and culture.

With 90 percent Sony in Portugal as others say, its ll still be good to get multi platform news/articles to increase awareness of general gaming scene.

What about Wii though, is that included in the remaining 10 percent?!

Fab4, talking about general population there :P Most people see what they want, not what it is. They don't actually care about searching the real facts as long as the ones that are presented to them are convenient. That is the truth about most of portugueses population. Old people still suffer from the dictatorship we had until 30 years ago, with the lack of information and studies. I'd say that in about 20 years with the new generation growing now, we'll be a new nation, much more informed, and actually capable of having opinions.

@GamesConnoisseur: That was the data that Sony Portugal gave a few months after PS3 came out, so I don't know how it is by now. But it probably isn't very different. Still, Wii must be selling 100x more than GC.

Foamy, I understand, and I think you are right. I've been a regular visitor to Portugal since 1996 and I can even see a difference in the country, in terms of how the general populace thinks. I only wish my fellow countrymen/women would take the time to leave places like Albufeira and see the real country.

I am from Albufeira...nice beachs anda girls, don't you think? :P

I think that Portugal is growing up very well, including in technology. Probably the GC and xbox don't made a huge success arround here, but what about Wi? Even the xbox 360 is making success here. But the Playstation is the most apreciated home console.

C'mon Heartbeat, Albufeira is like little England with good weather... I was embarrassed walking through it, especially as every restaurant owner approached us and asked us to eat there, in English. They got a shock when my friend replied in Portuguese..she enjoyed that. Most of them will never visit beautiful little places like Monsaraz or Evora.

I took a proper look at the site now, and even the article authors seem to talk but Playstation..., with "saucy" commenrts regarding for instance the fact that Haze is not HD: "does it really matter? playability is what matters!"..., ok, ok...

Most multiplat games are also reviwed only for playstation, with no mention, when it should be one, like in games such as Rainbow 6.

That said, it wont be with Eurogamer.pt that portugueses get better informed, I think.

STA: didn't you know that?

To be fair, miiiiguel, the exact same thing was said about Halo 3. And it IS true to an extent that gameplay matters a hell of a lot more (as long as the game is not as ugly as a speccy game).
But it is true that Haze has far worse wrong with it than the graphics.

If you read the reader comments, most people are saying that they're not gonna buy it. And you can be sure I won't either.

@ justMe. I think is not fair, the judgement that you has made. Because if you read the news, you will be able to see where the most content come from. And, if you want reviews, or articles from others plataforms, you just have, please give them the chance. Do not judged early yet. Eurogamer.pt have just only two days, and i see in the main page, all kind of content, from x360 to ds and wii.

More food for thought, about 2 hours ago I was at a media outlet and overheard some bloke asking one of the employees there wich next gen system he should buy, he was leaning torwards the 360 because he liked the videos for Halo, the employee responded:
"Don't buy that, that system is dead and it doesn't even outup in High Def, besides Halo is coming to the Ps3 later this year."

This country is going places...

I sincerely hope Eurogamer.pt can somehow help this retarded population, though I am extremely skeptic about it.
