New Eurogamer Portugal site launches

New pin appears in map on office wall.

Following the successful launches of Eurogamer Germany and Eurogamer France, Eurogamer Network has announced the launch of Eurogamer Portugal. It's like Risk, but real life!

The site is now up and running over at Eurogamer.pt. It's being published in partnership with LusoPlay, a leading gaming community in Portugal which was established by Tiago Silva in 2006. LusoPlay will be merged into Eurogamer.pt as part of the deal.

"We were very impressed with the success Tiago and his team achieved with LusoPlay," said Eurogamer managing director Rupert Loman, pushing things around a map with a big stick.

"Their expertise in the Portuguese gaming market and community, combined with the Eurogamer brand, reach, technology and infrastructure, mean Eurogamer.pt will quickly become the leading video game content site in Portugal."

Silva added, "I'm really happy to be part of Eurogamer. It has always been my favourite videogames website and it is regarded as one of the most important videogames websites around the world." Come on in, sir. "It's a pleasure to join the family. We are planning to make Eurogamer the best Portuguese-language videogames website ever."

Meanwhile, Eurogamer will not rest until either everyone in the world likes us as much as Tiago or we're all dead. It's not going too badly at the moment - last month more than 2.1 million unique users paid us a visit. Thanks, unique users! And bem vindo, new Portuguese friends!

I'm portuguese, so I guess it answers evils question.

But, really, no. As most not-so-developed countries, Portugal mainly sees video-games=playstation.

I'm happy with the portuguese site so far.

Ik eis dat er een Nederlandstalige versie van Eurogamer komt! Ik zou er zelfs aan mee kunnen gaan werken als jullie me genoeg betalen ;)
  • DFawkes #15 4 years ago

You still won't get to enter the UK only competitions though :p Shame, but means I get more chance of winning.

evilfoxhound, actually, 90% of all current consoles in Portugal are Sony. Yuppi :| GC and Xbox were almost nowhere to be found in stores, and even nowadays Playstation brand is the only known console brand by parents. We are a very very ungifted country in matters of technology and culture.
  • GamesConnoisseur #20 4 years ago

With 90 percent Sony in Portugal as others say, its ll still be good to get multi platform news/articles to increase awareness of general gaming scene.

What about Wii though, is that included in the remaining 10 percent?!
  • Fab4 #21 4 years ago

Technology maybe Foamy, but culture? From a country that gave us people like Pessoa? Pfft!!
  • nny #22 4 years ago

I have to admit is weird seeing the layout of eurogamer's front page in my native language; anyhow, I guess I'll stick to the english one. regardless of that, good luck with the project.
  • AcidSnake #23 4 years ago

    Dutch EG?!
Did my request for an italian EG go unheard?
    The dutch understand english!
Italians don't! (for the most part)...
  • foamy #24 4 years ago

Fab4, talking about general population there :p Most people see what they want, not what it is. They don't actually care about searching the real facts as long as the ones that are presented to them are convenient. That is the truth about most of portugueses population. Old people still suffer from the dictatorship we had until 30 years ago, with the lack of information and studies. I'd say that in about 20 years with the new generation growing now, we'll be a new nation, much more informed, and actually capable of having opinions.

@GamesConnoisseur: That was the data that Sony Portugal gave a few months after PS3 came out, so I don't know how it is by now. But it probably isn't very different. Still, Wii must be selling 100x more than GC.
  • mazzl #25 4 years ago

LOL, basically they make the effort to keep a dedicated Eurogamer website in your language and you are going to stick to the English one?

    I don't understand!
  • mcmonkeyplc #27 4 years ago

Is this part of the quest to find maddie?!
  • Fab4 #28 4 years ago

Foamy, I understand, and I think you are right. I've been a regular visitor to Portugal since 1996 and I can even see a difference in the country, in terms of how the general populace thinks. I only wish my fellow countrymen/women would take the time to leave places like Albufeira and see the real country.

  • miiiguel #29 4 years ago

By cruising shortly around the Portuguese forums, one can see it quickly turned into a playstation site, as expected. I'll stick to this one too. Kudos for the effort though....
  • mcmonkeyplc #30 4 years ago

Oh god! Dont ever add Avatars to the main EG forum! PLEASE!
  • PearOfAnguish #31 4 years ago

They have the internet in Portugal?
  • heartbeatPT #32 4 years ago

    @Fab4

I am from Albufeira...nice beachs anda girls, don't you think? :p

I think that Portugal is growing up very well, including in technology. Probably the GC and xbox don't made a huge success arround here, but what about Wi? Even the xbox 360 is making success here. But the Playstation is the most apreciated home console.

C'mon Heartbeat, Albufeira is like little England with good weather... I was embarrassed walking through it, especially as every restaurant owner approached us and asked us to eat there, in English. They got a shock when my friend replied in Portuguese..she enjoyed that. Most of them will never visit beautiful little places like Monsaraz or Evora.
  • Byzanite #34 4 years ago

Is eurogamer.pt more up to date??

Albufeira is England in the sun lol. Lagos is much nicer :)
  • heartbeatPT #35 4 years ago

Evora is beautiful. Allgarve have beautiful places too.
  • miiiguel #36 4 years ago

FFS man, spell Algarve proprelly. Such a stupid idea, imo, that Allgarve thing..., shame.

  • PedroTheLion #40 4 years ago

It's pretty much useless anyways since here in portugal videogames basically means
    Playstation :|
  • miiiguel #41 4 years ago

Demento41, I'm sorry if they messed with you... I'll have a talk with them...

I could say that our kids can at least drive their bikes without beeing shot in the street, but that would be unpolite.

  • SeesThroughAll #42 4 years ago

    OMG

I just found out that Apologie is portuguese too! :/
  • miiiguel #43 4 years ago

I took a proper look at the site now, and even the article authors seem to talk but Playstation..., with "saucy" commenrts regarding for instance the fact that Haze is not HD: "does it really matter? playability is what matters!"..., ok, ok...

Most multiplat games are also reviwed only for playstation, with no mention, when it should be one, like in games such as Rainbow 6.

That said, it wont be with Eurogamer.pt that portugueses get better informed, I think.

    STA: didn't you know that?
  • miiiguel #44 4 years ago

I sign tachi´s petition right away, I mean... shit, this is the country where you can hear: "I wonder what that new playstation 360 is?", or a guy in the games section of a major retailer saying to me "yes, we have Halo but unfortunatly we only received it for xbox... I don't know why?!"

  • justMe #45 4 years ago

Had a look, it's already turning it PlaystationGamer.pt... not for me, I'll stick with UKGamer.net. ;)
  • UncleLou #46 4 years ago

Bloody hell, that forum has already more posts than the French one, which launched when? A year ago?

Hats off to the Portuguese, not only do they make the best coffee in the world, they also talk about games!
  • SeesThroughAll #47 4 years ago

with "saucy" commenrts regarding for instance the fact that Haze is not HD: "does it really matter? playability is what matters!"..., ok, ok...

To be fair, miiiiguel, the exact same thing was said about Halo 3. And it IS true to an extent that gameplay matters a hell of a lot more (as long as the game is not as ugly as a speccy game).
But it is true that Haze has far worse wrong with it than the graphics.

If you read the reader comments, most people are saying that they're not gonna buy it. And you can be sure I won't either.
  • diefor Verified Director, Eurogamer Portugal #48 4 years ago

@ justMe. I think is not fair, the judgement that you has made. Because if you read the news, you will be able to see where the most content come from. And, if you want reviews, or articles from others plataforms, you just have, please give them the chance. Do not judged early yet. Eurogamer.pt have just only two days, and i see in the main page, all kind of content, from x360 to ds and wii.
  • PedroTheLion #49 4 years ago

More food for thought, about 2 hours ago I was at a media outlet and overheard some bloke asking one of the employees there wich next gen system he should buy, he was leaning torwards the 360 because he liked the videos for Halo, the employee responded:
"Don't buy that, that system is dead and it doesn't even outup in High Def, besides Halo is coming to the Ps3 later this year."

    This country is going places...

I sincerely hope Eurogamer.pt can somehow help this retarded population, though I am extremely skeptic about it.
  • darkphoenix #50 4 years ago

Miiiguel, you should reconsider, and start supporting the portuguese Eurogamer.
I am trying to fight the predictable sony overflow, you should do the same.

Afterall, it's up to us to change the situation in pt, by showing to a vast majority of blind-loyalist sony userbase that there are alternatives, being the X360 one of them.

You're not the only portuguese around here ( allthough you seem like it most of the times ) , and you're not the only non-sony lover in our country...

  • PedroTheLion #51 4 years ago

    @Darkphoenix

While I can apreciate and in part understand your optimism I truly belive it is a lost cause. The brand Playstation here is pretty much engrained in the videogame culture, similar to Nintendo in the USA, I honestly don't believe any kind of Newsite can change that.

I'd still rather visit the .net than the .pt seing as the later one suffers from the "washed out vanilla writing" desease that seems to plague 99% of the Portuguese enthusiast press.

  • justMe #52 4 years ago

@diefor: The problem is that I'm a Nintendo fan in Sony land. Not only do I have to put up with ignorant store clerks but also with the horrible Nintendo games distribution by Concentra. I end up reading news about european releases on Eurogamer.net and having to wait, sometimes over a month, for the games to reach the local stores. Most of the times I just "import" my games from uk/es/fr sites, otherwise I start feeling like I live in Morocco...
  • darkphoenix #53 4 years ago

Pedro, I won't stop visiting Eurogamer.net, it will remain my number 1 gaming site.
I just think we should try harder in our homeland.

I already started making some noise and pissing off some sony fanboys!
    Isn't life beautiful?
  • gamotakon #54 4 years ago

Apart from all the disccusions on PS/X360, I'm surprised portugal was the next country to receive eurogamer... and most glad it happened! Eurogamer is the best video games website around, and it's surely gonna be great in portugal too! Welcome, Eurogamer!
  • BumperKy #55 4 years ago

:) Yes we have Internet. In my house i have cable 30MB.

Portugal have a great community gamer, almost portuguese have 1 Playstation in-house, but we also have portuguese with Xbox 360 and in the moment Wii and Wii Fit is sold out in almost portuguese stores.

You now why portuguese are the best? Because ours games cost more than 60 euros (Xbox 360 games more than 70 euros), so we trade in community ours games. And Hypno, the best Quake IV gamer in the world are portuguese :))

piri piri is the international name for a spice. Its called piri piri all over the world.
  • foamy #58 4 years ago

@muscleblade, probably he/she thinks it's funny the way we pronounce it :p

BumperKy, os nossos custam 60/70€ e trocamos. O problema é que os deles custam 40/50€, e para eles dar 50€ é muito mais fácil que a nós, e eles também trocam, se calhar mais que nós.
