New Battlefield 2 patch test by Christmas News

PC News by Robert Purchese

1 December, 2008

DICE hopes to start an open beta for Battlefield 2 patch 1.5 before Santa stuffs himself down chimneys.

"The beta would be for everyone that wants to install it, the more people that do the better feedback we get and we don't have an update 1.30 again," said a spokesperson for the developer on the official forum (spotted by Blue's News).

"The plan is to get it out before Christmas yes."

There's no specific word on what will be in patch 1.5, although DICE has hinted at server stability and performance tweaks, plus plenty of fresh content.

The Swedish developer has come under fire for shonky implementation in the past, but then that's the point of public betas.

And yes, this is the same Battlefield 2 that was released back in 2005 when Tony Blair was still Prime Minister.

Fond memories of the online shooter include a Eurogamer (and EA) staff-versus-readers skirmish, which was quite embarrassing, particularly after our programmer drowned me and our designer in a lake. You lot never really stood a chance.

Head over to our Battlefield 2 gamepage to catch up.

DICE's patches do more harm than good in my experience. I loved Battlefield 2142, but after the final patch I could only use a few vehicle types as the others were suddenly too laggy.

Gave up on Battlefield games in the end.

After special forces I gave up this game. It still pisses me off that you could use the "better" guns from special forces in the vanilla battlefield. Hate these sort of things.

Yeah, this. BF1942 with shiny new visuals and prop driven aircraft. BF2 took all the fun out of dogfighting.

Hmm so Bad Company and Mirrors Edge out the way, now back to that BF2 patch we announced months ago. This better be more than just server stability etc. I am hoping for something that might hint at testing new game modes/vehicles/gameplay for the next BF.

For all the flaming this patch will get (however good it is), and despite the much smaller community these days, I'll be jumping right on this. Good on DICE for working on this, it's not always easy to get studio people to work on a patch for an old game when there are other more profitable priorities.

I'm still waiting for my Battlefield 2 username to be recognised so I can unlock the weapon in bad company. I can't even remember what the weapon was now. This post reminded me to try again. Still nothing

has the weird kick message been removed yet, the one that just has PUNKBUSTER scrawled accross the screen with no other text and you can only click ok...

How about making the game browser work properly? How about making it so the hit detection actually detects hits? how about making it so the guns kill in less than 1 magazine? How about making the guns capable of hitting things when in full auto? How about making it so punkbuster actually works rather than kicking you out of he game for no reason? How about making it so the support weapons actually hit things such as enemies? The list of things that were never fixed go on and on.
