Neverwinter Nights 2 expands again News

PC News by Dan Pearson

11 June, 2008

Atari has announced Storm of Zehir, a second expansion for D&D beast Neverwinter Nights 2.

The 15-hour campaign, due for release in Q4 this year, promises a massive inventory of improvements and focuses on a quest-line directly after the original's conclusion.

Probably the key change is the ability to explore a "vast" overland map, which basically translates to being able to move around the faithful old Sword Coast and new "xenophobic jungle nation" Samarach in a non-linear fashion, using skills such as 'Spot' and 'Survival' to pre-empt ambushes and discover hidden treasures and locales.

Storm of Zehir will also revert to a party model similar those seen in Icewind Dale and Baldur's Gate, allowing full-party customisation rather than sticking you with the pre-rolled troupe of adventurers that populated NWN2.

Wearing the baddie hats this time around are shape-shifting bastards the Yuan Ti, borrowed from the Forgotten Realms. These slithering gits emerge as the force majeur attempting to baffle the economic regrowth of the Sword Coast and Chultan Peninsula after the death of the King of Shadows, although we're pretty sure economic destabilsation is probably going to transpire as a means to a more nefarious end.

Atari has also promised a responsive economic and political structure, adapting to the growth of your trading company, as well as party feats, teamwork bonuses and a nice round of cream teas once it's all over. [What on earth is going on here? - Ed]

Essentially, it's a bit like The Apprentice, with Alan Sugar replaced by a giant, semi-humanoid snake beast.

I picked up the last expansion and still haven't played it... I'll save my money this time around.

Borrowed from the Forgotten Realms? NWN2 is set in the Forgotten Realms, like almost every D&D game since Baldur's Gate.

Um. If the game takes place on the Sword Coast, it takes place in the Forgotten Realms.

I wasn't aware the Yuan Ti were shapeshifters.
This expansion sounds rather interesting. Trading company eh?

Yeah, it must suck if it isn't good enough to entertain you BEFORE you've played it.

Whatever else you say about the game, no reviewer ever claimed that MoTB wasn't rammed full of stuff that improved the game in every way.

Hopefully if the game media doesn't dismiss it as a hardcore relic that isn't WoW, people might actually play it and realize how good RPGs used to be.

The first expansion "Mask of the Betrayer" was very good. I showed what Obsidian are capable of when they are freed up from making a Toolset, DM client, engine, and a single player game.

I'm not sure about the lack of companions though?

Has there been a smiliar party mode for the earlier NWN2 expansions?

Yuan-Ti were shapeshifters in Icewind Dale, I remember. That creeped me out.

Interesting news.

What concerns me though: I hope the fully customisable party doesn't result in more generic dialogue instead of the funny remarks made by your party members at times. Obsidian has kept me quite entertained with the quirky dialogues between the party-members, it seems hard to accomplish the same level of commitment when you use fully customisable characters. Just thinking.

I enjoyed Neverwinter Nights 2, it had a really good story, if you could shift through all the bugs and ridiculous system requirements. MoTB improved on the problem of the generic team mates, and I really liked how it was a direct continuation of the original.

Good news. Better news would be that they also fixed the random save game corrupting bug.
