Ubi signs top snowboarder News

Top snowboarder Shaun White has declared that he is "stoked" to be working on a new set of snowboarding games with Ubisoft.

White, who is just 19, which would explain why he uses words like "stoked", is a six time X Games gold medallist and the only snowboarder to win the gold medal for both halfpipe and slopestyle. At this year's Winter Olympics he picked up another gold medal for doing all manner of back-to-back 1080 degree rotations.

"I'm stoked to be working with Ubisoft to develop a video game that captures the thrill of snowboarding like no game has done before," White said.

"I'm a huge fan of Ubisoft games like Prince of Persia, so I'm excited to be able to combine what I love about snowboarding and gaming into an experience for everyone to enjoy."

A Ubisoft bigwig said they were jolly happy as well.

"White, who is just 19, which would explain why he uses words like "stoked""

lol, Oh how I wish that were true. Snowboarders who are quite old enough to know better still talk about how they are stoked to have stomped a sick trick.

I personally prefer to stick to more mature terminology, such as "Holy shit, did you see that bit where he* did that mad twist when he was upside down, that was shit hot!".

*Or she of course. There are plenty of girl boarders out there (most of whom can kick my ass on the slopes), with numbers growing all the time.

Anyway, another snowboarding game is no bad thing, teenage sponsor or no.

I wish a game would ditch all the crazy afros and impossible tricks, though. They're good for a laugh, but sometimes I want something that's at least somewhat realistic.

/still thinks 1080 on the N64 is the best snowboarding game ever

regarding a more realistic and less childish snowboard experience..myself was lucky enough being a beta-tester for the upcoming pc-title 'Stoked Rider ft. Tommy Brunner' and this game is what a mature audience should possible look-out for.
the clever utilization of a physics-engine together with a PC-centric mouse-control offers a more pure feeling of boarding down untouched-powderfields than any other title.
i always was turned off by the style & presentation offered by SSX & Amped-games, so maybe this game is what ppl are looking for not interested in pink-bunnies and unrealistic freestyle-tricks....

just my 5c

Ooh, is that PC only HenElb do you know? That sounds just my cup of tea, in snowboard game form.

Well, I still think the first Amped was lovely.

White doesn't clarify *which* Prince of Persia game he was a fan of. He needs to know that it's VERY IMPORTANT to be clear.

I'm afraid he might be meaning Warrior Within.

i tested it on a windows-system although there's word that there will OS-X & Linux builds aswell.
find more at: http://www.stokedrider.com

although i think the screenshots are really stylish this game hasn't got much attention at my fav site here ( but maybe thats because there's no big publisher behind pushing this title)

Ah excellent, another snowboarding game. Just what we need after the huge numbers that SSX On Tour & Amped 3 Sold. Not.

You seem to be suggesting there are too many sb games out there, but then you only mention two (the sales of which aren't really relevant unless you were forced to buy six copies of each).

Man, some peple are never happy. I bet if someone gave you a time machine you would complain they didn't give it to you sooner.

Thats a pity. I have a PC laptop, but its not really my main gaming system these days.

Looks nice though so I may well be tempted. I quite like the art style. The detail may be low, but their light and colour choices really capture that cold and sparse feeling of a mountain quite well.

No I mean Snowboarding games don't seem to be in vogue right now. Both of the two games I mention are pretty good attempts at snowboarding games, yet neither set retail on fire. 'Extreme' sport games generally seem to be getting a hard time right now, so I wonder if Ubisoft are behind the curve here. That's what I mean. And of course the sales of them are relevant. If it's not about sales then what exactly do you make games for?

I still play Amped 2 quite a bit. New efforts are welcome. If we only could have the depth of A2 with more polish, better physics and some well-adjusted accesibility to rein in new players (and buyers).

The transformation of Ubisoft becoming 'EA #2' is nearing completion.

First, they have bought the rights to a bunch of licences.

Second, they are churning out yearly updates for many of their bigger franchises.

And now, thirdly, they are looking at releasing a bunch of sportsperson-endorsed sporting games.

I fear the worst for this once great company...

I watched some of the women's half-pipe on the telly last night... they were shit, nowhere near as good as the tricks in SSX...

Ahhhhh. My bad. I thought you meant you didn't like snowboarding games. So I figured you meant that even though they sold well (which of course they didn't, my mistake again) you weren't looking forward to any more of them.

I'll just keep my fat gob shut then, or rename myself to Dr Gunjumper. Sorry about that :)

If you switch channels to Television-X I think you will find their womens half-pipe much more entertaining :)

Oh dear, I turned into Xander for a second there. I need to go and brush my teeth now.
