Miyamoto will work on Sonic & Mario

"Certainly there and involved"

Nintendo and SEGA have confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that Shigeru Miyamoto will have a hand in the development of forthcoming title Mario & Sonic at the Olympic games.

"When Mario is involved, Mr Miyamoto is never very far away," said Nintendo's European marketing director, Laurent Fischer.

"He's working on a large number of titles and he's delegating to the producer, but he's always there... The game is being developed by SEGA, but we are used to Mr Miyamoto going and following up with the team.

"He's joining the discussion, it's a relationship - he's not directing the game, he's just there in the discussions. Mario is there so Miyamoto is there; it's a natural thing."

Mario and Sonic in the same game, if i said that 15 years ago i would have got shot.

So Miyamoto had a hand in all those Mario *insert sport* titles.

Respect -10 actually... -5 afterall he DID create Zelda.

  • lambtron #4 5 years ago

The one on Wii is sposed to be pretty good.
  • Keso #5 5 years ago

...so long as his wife likes it, thats all that matters.
  • Darkedge #6 5 years ago

Miyamoto has to be involved so he can claim all the credit afterwards if it's any good (or Nintendo bosses can push it all onto him)
  • jonsaan #7 5 years ago

Good stuff. It may be saved from minigame hell after all.
  • haveasafeday #8 5 years ago

Fingers crossed this somewhat strange idea turns out to be a decent game

  • AcidSnake #10 5 years ago

    @Steroyd:

Yeah, like I'm predicting that in 15 years from now SOny and Microsoft will release a console together...The PX...

It'll happen, and if it doesn't you can all laugh at me in 15 years time!...

Somic Team where awesome but they where never the same without Yuji Naka (father of sonic) and his gang.

This is something we all never thought possible during the original 16-bit era
  • Destria #14 5 years ago

The GBA sonic games are pretty good, as is Sonic Rush on the DS.

Note that these are all 2D platformy games though...

    @Saii

    Sonic, not Somic

    Were, not where

i must be one of the few people that actually enjoyed the mario sports games. i loved mario golf/tennis on the N64 & Cube

dunno why people seem to have such a problem with 'em
  • chrisjm #18 5 years ago

    should mean its good :)
all the n64 and cube mario sports games have been great fun!
  • IMadeThis #19 5 years ago

I think this'll turn out great - a la Wii Sports. Don't care if it's got Sonic/Mario in it, it's all about Shigs. Can't fail really.

Hopefully it's decent...but regardless of quality..this game will sell a ton of Wii's in Europe and the US.

Exactly the type of thing Nintendo needs this holiday season.

They won't be able to compete for hype with"teh mature" games like GTA4 and Halo 3 (I fear Metroid Prime 3 and Resident Evil UC may be overlooked in that battle)....

..... so they fight for a massive piece of the market where 360 and PS3 just won't have a chance due to their pricing.

Good.. if he's involved it's less likely to suck, even though i still feel it might.
  • smelly #23 5 years ago

    >ears from now SOny and Microsoft will release a console together

Why would they do that? Neither has any really decent ips to join together.

Hmmm.. Maybe we'll have Halo 20 and Gran Tourismo 15.. So Halo Tourismo boxing?

    >like GTA4 and Halo 3

"mature"... hahhahahaaha.. yeah right.. But that's for another time

You're probably right about GTA - it's one of the few games i'll be in line to get for my 360. But also remember the wii is getting manhunt 2 at around the same time.

As for halo3.. nah. Halo only really appeals to "hard core" gaming geeks, wont ditract from nintendo one bit that.

    >"Somic Team where awesome but they where never the same without Yuji Naka (father of sonic) and his gang. "

Without the orginial sonic team, smilebit, and the original AM-2 (lead by yu suzuki) sega has gone down hill.

And I'm shocked. Smelly, defending ninty? Whatever next?
  • smelly #25 5 years ago

    >And I'm shocked. Smelly, defending ninty? Whatever next?

No, im DISCUSSING a nintendo game (well actually it looks more like a sega game). Where am i defending them?

    Dumbass.

    "Olympic Games Games lol
    They all suck"

They sure have to date. The main strikes against them is that most are:
    A crass event cash-in.
    A loose collection of arcade-style mini-games (of widely-ranging quality).
Insane button-mashing with timed button-mashing thrown in.

If there's ever been an opportunity to do something different and fun, the Wii is that opportunity. Think Wii Sports with two or three dozen additional events.
  • smelly #27 5 years ago

I originally thought this'd suck.. More i think about it, the more potential it has.

Especially if both mario and sonic control differently.

    Maybe even platformy bits too?
  • Daikon #28 5 years ago

    Did hell just freeze over?
  • Genji #29 5 years ago

Hopefully, there will be some minigame where they fight to the bitter end.

EDIT: Also, I would hazard a guess that a lot of the people who moan "oh god, not ANOTHER mario sports game" have never played a mario sports game.

Yeah yeah, brand whoring is bad etc. But they're mostly good games. It looks like a lot of effort goes into them.

Miyamoto is a doddering old fool. He more or less bumbled his way into gaming fame with good timing and a fair share of luck. His games are formulaic, and his influence has long since waned.

Please, hopeless lovers of all things celebrity, bury this man once and for all.

  • firefly #35 5 years ago

    My predictions...

Sonic will win all of the races.
Mario will win the events that involve jumping...but drug tests will prove him to be using performance enhancing mushrooms.

Sonic Rush? Good god no, that game is awful. Unless of course you like memorizing entire levels so you don't plummet to your doom because you can't see ahead of you and you don't know which drops are bottomless/which aren't. The entire game is pressing down right on the D-pad while hoping for the best and jumping occasionally. Returned it after a day. Garbage.

I rather suspect this is a troll, but I would just like to point out that if Miyamoto's games are formulaic it's because he wrote the formula.
  • smelly #39 5 years ago

what formula does he use? If it's that simple, why dont more people do it?
