GTA IV to get special edition

Exclusive soundtrack inside.

Rockstar has announced that both 360 and PS3 versions of Grand Theft Auto IV will be available in a Special Edition box come release time in October.

The metal safety deposit box will contain an art book, a soundtrack CD, a keychain with keys to the box, and a Rockstar-branded duffel bag. Oh - and a copy of the game, wrapped in special packaging.

Of most interest, perhaps, is the "selected" soundtrack CD featuring tracks that will only be available as part of this special edition. Some of these will be new material from "top artists" - suggesting that Rockstar has licensed some exclusive, contemporary tracks this time around, rather than merely raid record companies' back catalogues, as it did on last-gen GTAs.

The GTA IV Special Edition will cost $89.99 in the US. Although its release in Europe has been confirmed, we don't know how much it'll cost over here yet. It's available for pre-orders right now.

Bundle a load of tat with the game and charge an extra £20.
They really are locking onto the obsessive fan market aren't they.

Not as bad as Halo 3 Legendary Edition mind.

I sometimes buy into this kind of things with films I really like (plus could be worth something)

But it's not worth it with games cos the game it self will be massivly dated by the time the extra gumf is worth anything

So 90 dollars for the US special edition that converts to about 45-50 pounds, god what sort of crazy person would spend £50 on a game.......Oh!
  • Hughes. #8 5 years ago

Every special edition I've bought has been around £10 cheaper than the standalone game, that's really the only definition of "special" that interests me, in this regard.

unless your importing straight from America then you can't exactly just convert the monies like that.

The standard PS2 game which costs £40 here would convert straight to nearly $80 in America.

Do America pay $80 per game on the PS2?

A standard PS2 game costs £30 here, which is £25.53 + VAT. In the US they pay $50 + VAT, which is added on afterwards. So we pay a whole 50 pence more.

Presumably if you wanted the PS3 special edition you could simply import it from the US, and not have to worry about how much the Euro SE will cost.

What are they going to call it? GTA IV Ghia?

    $89.99

    SUPERRIPOFFADVENTURE!

I suggest you examine your numbers again Zomoniac. $50-54 does not equal 30 quid.

Still, special editions are rarely such. Hell, they don't ever even come in yellow packaging.

I hope they continue to "raid record companies' back catalogues". Nostalgic music FTW!

    Everybody copies Halo.
  • Darkedge #16 5 years ago

$89.99 will as usual mean £89.99 as Americans can't manage the complexities of actually converting currencies.
  • Khanivor #17 5 years ago

Ah yes, stupid Americans disguising themselves as Europeans and selling product at greatly inflated prices to equally sharp and fickle European consumers.

"The metal safety deposit box will contain an art book, a soundtrack CD, a keychain with keys to the box"

Lets hope the keys aren't locked in the box, that really would be a proper Special Edition, just for 'special' people :D
  • souljacker2000 #19 5 years ago

    @skooch

Was thinking the same... then looked out the window n saw a group of chavs... im sure they can get into the box.. leaving me to buy the normal copy... not that i have a problem with it
  • tenma #20 5 years ago

was mildly interested until i saw the price :\

I suggest you read my post again. I never said it did. I said MINUS TAX we pay £25 and Americans pay $50. And $50 does equal £25, to all intents and purposes.

The sad thing is, I'll probably wind up buying this if I have any money at that stage. Most special editions rub me up the wrong way completely because I've next to no interest in soundtracks, but I do like the occasional art book. The Half-Life 2 artbook was great, and had loads of detail of stuff that wasn't in the game, and the Warcraft 3 one worked well too. I like concept art and seeing the evolution of designs. No idea if the GTA one will be any good, though, obviously. Behind the Scenes DVDs for games are occasionally cool too, though a few I've seen were boring and rubbish.

Of course, I bought the HL2 artbook seperately at a ridiculously low price, and got the Warcraft 3 special edition for a tenner in HMV, so...

Were the Legendary Edition of Halo 3 not supposedly limited to something obscene like 10,000 worldwide, I'd probably try and pick that up at some point, but frankly I don't care enough to attempt to queue for it or hang around refreshing Play and hope that my click beats the millions that will hit BUY in the first three seconds.

I'm just attracted to special editions, I guess :|

It's a great marketing strategy, those 'special' editions. Most people want to be ‘special’ or have ‘special’ things. Like every Disney DVD nowadays is a ‘special’ edition… My bet is that most people buying the ‘special’ editions end up never ever looking at the extra features as they’re often a complete waste of time…
