Myst Online out today

Uru Live! It's a miracle!

Descending gracefully over the hills of the internet today is Myst Online: Uru Live, which will be the first game in the puzzle-solving series to venture into an MMO setting.

The game is available now directly from GameTap in the US, with the promise of versions for other regions - although if you can find the links on the official site then you're better men than us. A Mac version will be released sometime in spring.

Developed by Cyan Worlds, the title is a traditional Myst experience, boasting fresh puzzles and a new storyline, which will continually evolve around the online community. You'll also now be able to interact with other players using familiar MMO communication such as voice or text chat, as you form groups and take on mind-bending challenges.

"Myst Online: Uru Live is the most ambitious Myst experience we've ever created," said Rand Miller, CEO of Cyan Worlds. "By developing an interactive, online world driven by intrigue and exploration instead of violence, massively multiplayer online gamers now have a choice unlike any of the other options."

Myst Online will be the sixth game in the series, which started all the way back in 1993.

But alas, unfortunately it sounds like we won't be doing any more rat-punching for any fair housewives in distress. However, you can find out exactly what you will be doing, plus any other puzzle-solving clues on the game's website.

I remember when they released the game Uru. The gamebox promised that when you had finished the game, you could take part in the ongoing world online. A few months after the release they announced that the Uru Online experience was dead in the water and would never materialize.

And now they bring this! Uh.. Will I be able to login using my old Uru game then?!

the sequel to 'in memoriam' is a sort of mmo murder mystery, where you have to solve puzzles and such via searching the internet, but you can get real life contacts who are also playing the game(as well as automatic email bots who send you hints)

    its rather neat

I so want to play this, but my country is not among the "supported" European countries. I hate it.

I *loved* Myst and especially Riven, then kinda lost track of the series after that. Might try this out.

do people think this will take off? Or will there be a sole person wandering lost in the world saying "hello"? (ironically, probably more inkeeping with the myst ethos :p)

EDIT: Actually thinking about it (and looking at the website) how on earth will this work as an MMO?

I thought cyan had been shut down!! Live and learn.

how the earth is this gonna play?

People form communities and just wander around, solving puzzles either on their own or in a group (some puzzles evidently require multiple people tackling them at once), talking to people, participating in events and advancing the storyline.

It's basically all the content of the old Uru game plus expansions (which is quite a bit), but this time with the multiplayer aspects that Cyan always envisioned. They'll also be pumping out new content and ages, thanks to funding from GameTap.

I'd so very much like to sign up and play, but I would need to spoof my IP with a proxy or something since my country isn't on the list of supported countries.

    *sigh*
