Myst heads to DS

Puzzler due in November.

Descending over our news hills this afternoon is Midway with the revelation that Myst will be heading to DS.

It'll be available in November and be a similar affair to last year's PSP offering. However, Cyan Worlds will be rebuilding it to make use of the quirky DS controls, and is including additional New and Rime ages to explore.

Myst is an adventure game built around solving puzzles in picturesque locations. There's no inventory and no death, just bastardly taxing tasks. However, the real thrill will apparently come from unravelling the "intrafamily" drama as you go. Spooky.

The series has been around for donkey's years now, with the first instalment hitting Macintosh shelves in 1993. It's been immensely popular over the ages, too, although it's somewhat retired into its own niche these days.

Myst Online: Uru Live launched in February, spreading the puzzle-vision into the MMO genre. Head over to the official site for more information.

It looked boring on the PSP, and boring it will still look on the DS.

It could work on the DS very nicely, I think if there's any game fit for shoehorning in the touchscreen it is Myst.

If it's fit for the DS, it's not exactly shoehorning anymore, is it. ;)

It was nice on the PSP for the most part, but was ultimately broken due to the slow controls and all the little loading pauses.

I have no clue how they're going to fit all of Myst onto one DS card, but as long as they do that, it hopefully isn't too hard to eradicate the loading pauses and get the control system to work as well as on PC.

We'll see. Could turn out great, if Midway's team knows what it does.

I've never actually played Myst, but Riven and Excile both required a lot of note-taking in order to overcome the more elaborate puzzles, and to make sense of the Dini numbering/language system.
Therefore, they aren't really that well suited to mobile gaming.
From what little I've seen of Myst, it looks like even more of a note-taking game. So I think I'll pass.

Besides, I already have a copy for the PC - just never gotten around to playing it.

You dont really "play" myst.. you just experience it..

Look around at pretty things then solve puzzles. In the same way as doing soduku on a train, you dont PLAY it, you just solve puzzles, while occasionally looking up at the attractive girl sat opposite you (trying to look all intelligent for doing it)

Brilliant, the original Myst and Riven were both superb games. Mind you, zero replayability so I hope they don't just simply port the original game.

I really hope this finally opens the gate for other old adventures to be ported to the DS.

Replayability is fine to me. I tend to forget things after a year or two, and even though the game will be more familiar and I will remember some of the solutions, much fun is again to be had a couple of years down the line.

    Then again, that's just me.

To think they will do anything at all but to port it is naïve though.
