Myst Free released on iPhone News

iPhone News by Oli Welsh

6 October, 2009

Cyan Worlds has released a free version of its classic 1993 puzzle adventure Myst on the iPhone.

Myst Free is restricted to the exploration of Myst Island, but still weighs in at a substantial 123MB - so that it can cram in all those haunting, static images.

If you want to explore the full five Ages of the original game, it's currently on sale and will only set you back £2.99.

Myst's relationship with Apple is a long one - it's that rare beast, a game that was originally released for Mac before PC. Although it has subsequently been ported to virtually every system you can imagine.

Is this any good? I remember someone telling me that Mr. Spock would have trouble with the illogical nature of the puzzles.

If you can only explore part of the original game it's basically a demo isn't it? It's a nice way to give the audience a taste of the full game, but calling it a free version of Myst is basically a marketing tactic by Cyan Worlds to get people to try out the demo. Again, not a bad thing, but worth pointing out nonetheless.

If it's anything like the PC demo I played 15 years ago, it's all most people will want to play of it.

Yep, I imagine most people who use the App Store would understand this. The game name followed by "Free" is pretty much the convention for naming demos. It makes sense when you browse on your iPhone as you have the free and paid categories to browse.

Agreed - but it's still annoying.

@Cyclone You're not allowed to use the term "demo" on the App Store, which is why there are so many "free" and "lite" apps.
