MS says 360 will win console war News

Xbox 360 boss Don Mattrick has boldly claimed that his console will win the war. "I'm willing to declare here today that Xbox 360 will sell more consoles worldwide this generation than PS3," he said.
His comments were made during the Microsoft E3 press conference earlier this evening. He revealed that US 360 sales were at 10.3 million, which is "5 million-plus" higher than PS3, citing NPD Group data.
Mattrick also went on to say that third-party game revenue on 360 had already "outpaced the Wii and PS3 combined".
But he made the most noise for Xbox Live, revealing it had now bulged to over 12 million members.
"A new member joins every five seconds," said Mattrick. Between them those members have spent "more than one billion dollars", we were told.
Microsoft also showed a redesigned Xbox Live dashboard and announced partnerships with film rental service Netflix and NBC and Universal Studios. This means shows such as The Office US and Battlestar Galactica are on their way, although these announcements were limited to the US.
New European partnerships include Renown Studios, MGM and Constantin, so we can all download The Chronicles of Riddick and Fast And The Furious. Finally.

Tomorrows headline "Sony predict that PS3 will sell more than 360". Come on this is like some rule that has to be followed by all corporation speakers. Promise better sales based on zero facts and no strategy. Heck Nintendo will be promising to stay market leaders for the next five years in their conference no doubt.

Unfortunately its the marketing rule of the consoles... continue to talk up your product which irratates users, rather than just concentrate on the games and software etc. Why they (they being all console manufacturers) do it i will never know. Just makes people more angry with them.

Vic, did you see the recent NPD figures from the US? The 5 months through to May, PS3 sold 1.2 million, and 360 sold 1.12 million. Even with the MGS4 bump in May, PS3 is only catching by 16k units per month, and is several million behind.
Wii is another matter entirely. |

now that the 360 has almost all the ps3 exclusives and if any normal people have any kind of sense of economics they have to win the console war. if i had the choice out of a overpriced games machine that had a shit dashboard system or one thats cheap, outperforms the ps3 and has a dashboard, friend system and online services that work properly, i know which one i'd go for. the 360 obviously

And that'll be their greatest failing. The moment MS turn their back on Sony they'll be supassed. Let's not lose perspective here. PS3 is still their greatest rival. Trying to do a Wii will just confuse their brand identity. You only have to look at the live feed thread to see how alienated alot of their target audience was with that presentation. It's like the guys at Bonus Round said, I have very little faith in MS's ability to tap into that mainstream audience. They should focus on what their good at, rather than go for everything and turn their hardware strategy into a shambles. (Not that it isn't judging by that presentation. In fact I wouldn't even imply they have a coherent strategy to speak off).

Maybe... but it seems like MS is now concentrating on the Wii in the US at least. The PS3 will probably never catch up with 360 over there. Are they doing the right thing? I dunno... at least we will see a much broader selection of software on 360. The (exclusive) game-battle with the Ps3 is not relevant for them atm since developers pick 360 anyway now for the $$$$. |

And there in lies their problem. Like Sony, they should focus on their own business. But being the company they are they'll try and dip their toes in all waters and end up selling themselves short. Who knows. Lets see. If you're right with the above statement they'll continue to lose ground in Europe which they can't afford to do if they are serious about their proclaimation. Having said that, the presentation didn't indicate any intent to shift their focus to the Wii market. The majority of their casual focus was done through software mimicking Sony's casual strategy (a startegy that has paid dividends for the Japanese manufacturer in Europe).

Why do you focus on Xbox 360 so much Rash?
All eyez on me is their best situation possible, personally i can't be arsed with the Sony presser Stop dissing the thing, either buy one, or shut the fark up, they don't force you to watch their presser and release the claws, play your console and sleep safe in the knowledge you paid more money for it, and it plays movies in 1080p i thought it was a good conf, gears looking graphically top end, fable 2 having live co op not just feared couchyness, fallout lookin nice, resi looking just like resi 4 but with co op...twas good stuff, and if you don't like the noise you can always fill up your harddrive in a non mandatory stylee ...at least Apologie isn't here.. |

I imagine MS will release another console in 2010/11 and declare this generation over so they are probably right. Can't see the PS3 making up that ground in that time, no matter that the 360 is currently selling behind the Wii and PS3 monthly in the US, Europe and Japan.

Not every multi plat game is superior on the 360, you probably believe Eurogamer's Face Off, of course the 360 version are superior, they're 360 fanboy's . Blame the developer's/M$ for the PS3's lack of exclusives. I may come off as a PS3 fanboy, not true, the console is more reliable. |

Unfortunately for Msoft, they have gone first...which allows the other two companies a chance at retaliatory comments if they so desire. No doubt they'll be left looking pretty flat in the wake of Sony's and Nintendo's conferences. All that hot air for nothing.
Seriously: Avatars...woo...Singstar and XMB rip-offs...cor...getting FFXIII after it's been out for ages in Japan on PS3 only...blimey...No FFXIII Versus... Meh....... |

You wouldnt know since you never had the best gaming experience availaible. As a former owner of all 3 consoles its pretty obviouvs that you are mistaken. Wii is the best selling, but the 360 is easily the best console with the best online service and games. The PS3 is the best for movies in HD but are almost useless as a gaming console imo. |

Or is the ignore campaign still in full swing? Fuuny, because I'm sure if we dug through the archives you would find MS and Sony saying the Wii wouldn't be a problem. I guess in a funny way it isn't, because they refuse to believe it exists. Never has a battle for second place been so dirty :) |
