MS says 360 will win console war

Will beat PS3 this generation, it says.

Xbox 360 boss Don Mattrick has boldly claimed that his console will win the war. "I'm willing to declare here today that Xbox 360 will sell more consoles worldwide this generation than PS3," he said.

His comments were made during the Microsoft E3 press conference earlier this evening. He revealed that US 360 sales were at 10.3 million, which is "5 million-plus" higher than PS3, citing NPD Group data.

Mattrick also went on to say that third-party game revenue on 360 had already "outpaced the Wii and PS3 combined".

But he made the most noise for Xbox Live, revealing it had now bulged to over 12 million members.

"A new member joins every five seconds," said Mattrick. Between them those members have spent "more than one billion dollars", we were told.

Microsoft also showed a redesigned Xbox Live dashboard and announced partnerships with film rental service Netflix and NBC and Universal Studios. This means shows such as The Office US and Battlestar Galactica are on their way, although these announcements were limited to the US.

New European partnerships include Renown Studios, MGM and Constantin, so we can all download The Chronicles of Riddick and Fast And The Furious. Finally.

    Tomorrows headline "Sony predict that PS3 will sell more than 360". Come on this is like some rule that has to be followed by all corporation speakers. Promise better sales based on zero facts and no strategy. Heck Nintendo will be promising to stay market leaders for the next five years in their conference no doubt.

    Unfortunately its the marketing rule of the consoles... continue to talk up your product which irratates users, rather than just concentrate on the games and software etc. Why they (they being all console manufacturers) do it i will never know. Just makes people more angry with them.

    Vic, did you see the recent NPD figures from the US? The 5 months through to May, PS3 sold 1.2 million, and 360 sold 1.12 million. Even with the MGS4 bump in May, PS3 is only catching by 16k units per month, and is several million behind.

    Wii is another matter entirely.

    now that the 360 has almost all the ps3 exclusives and if any normal people have any kind of sense of economics they have to win the console war. if i had the choice out of a overpriced games machine that had a shit dashboard system or one thats cheap, outperforms the ps3 and has a dashboard, friend system and online services that work properly, i know which one i'd go for. the 360 obviously

    And that'll be their greatest failing. The moment MS turn their back on Sony they'll be supassed. Let's not lose perspective here. PS3 is still their greatest rival. Trying to do a Wii will just confuse their brand identity. You only have to look at the live feed thread to see how alienated alot of their target audience was with that presentation. It's like the guys at Bonus Round said, I have very little faith in MS's ability to tap into that mainstream audience. They should focus on what their good at, rather than go for everything and turn their hardware strategy into a shambles. (Not that it isn't judging by that presentation. In fact I wouldn't even imply they have a coherent strategy to speak off).

    Maybe... but it seems like MS is now concentrating on the Wii in the US at least. The PS3 will probably never catch up with 360 over there. Are they doing the right thing? I dunno... at least we will see a much broader selection of software on 360. The (exclusive) game-battle with the Ps3 is not relevant for them atm since developers pick 360 anyway now for the $$$$.

    And there in lies their problem. Like Sony, they should focus on their own business. But being the company they are they'll try and dip their toes in all waters and end up selling themselves short. Who knows. Lets see. If you're right with the above statement they'll continue to lose ground in Europe which they can't afford to do if they are serious about their proclaimation.

    Having said that, the presentation didn't indicate any intent to shift their focus to the Wii market. The majority of their casual focus was done through software mimicking Sony's casual strategy (a startegy that has paid dividends for the Japanese manufacturer in Europe).

    All eyez on me is their best situation possible, personally i can't be arsed with the Sony presser

    Stop dissing the thing, either buy one, or shut the fark up, they don't force you to watch their presser and release the claws, play your console and sleep safe in the knowledge you paid more money for it, and it plays movies in 1080p

    i thought it was a good conf, gears looking graphically top end, fable 2 having live co op not just feared couchyness, fallout lookin nice, resi looking just like resi 4 but with co op...twas good stuff, and if you don't like the noise you can always fill up your harddrive in a non mandatory stylee

    ...at least Apologie isn't here..

    PS3 is still the cheapest blu-ray player and it is upgradable, which is unique for a blu-ray player. As a games console, seriously bad. Very few exclusives and every multiformat game is inferior to the 360. Its selling consoles on brand alone.

    I imagine MS will release another console in 2010/11 and declare this generation over so they are probably right. Can't see the PS3 making up that ground in that time, no matter that the 360 is currently selling behind the Wii and PS3 monthly in the US, Europe and Japan.

    Not every multi plat game is superior on the 360, you probably believe Eurogamer's Face Off, of course the 360 version are superior, they're 360 fanboy's .

    Blame the developer's/M$ for the PS3's lack of exclusives.

    I may come off as a PS3 fanboy, not true, the console is more reliable.

    Unfortunately for Msoft, they have gone first...which allows the other two companies a chance at retaliatory comments if they so desire. No doubt they'll be left looking pretty flat in the wake of Sony's and Nintendo's conferences. All that hot air for nothing.

    You wouldnt know since you never had the best gaming experience availaible. As a former owner of all 3 consoles its pretty obviouvs that you are mistaken. Wii is the best selling, but the 360 is easily the best console with the best online service and games. The PS3 is the best for movies in HD but are almost useless as a gaming console imo.

    Can I just ask, why do people constantly cite that Live is an excellent service and PSN is crap? I admit Ive never used Live but I use PSN all the time to play warhawk mainly. Its lag free, I can invite friends, voip and now I have trophies(besides the in-game ones that were already there),
    What makes Live so much better? Not intended to be a fan boy post Im just curious as to what Im missing out on.

    I think in restrospect this press conference was quite interesting. It has been said many times before (especially in the GI.biz newsletter thing) that Microsoft have captured what's now called the core gamer demographic. They've caught up with Sony and broadly look like they're staying there. But Nintendo have raced off with the casual crowd this gehneration, so now Microsoft are making concerted attempts to pursue them, or at least grab the market that bought a PS2 for Singtar and/or Eyetoy.

    I don't think it'll work, not this generation at least, but few people would have expected MS to steal such a march over Sony with 360 vs PS3. MS now have a console that's priced cheaper than Wii in both Europe and the US. This conference wasn't for you, Eurogamer readers, it was for the new (additional) audience Microsoft wants a slice of.

    I think we, 360 gamers, need to look to Ubi's, to Ea's, to Capcom's, Take 2's and Activision's conferences. Because all the big console games they announce, we're getting.

    What a load of bolloks. Hold on to your last castle, MS, but it will fall eventually. Sony's got enough good releases in the pipeline, they've got enough inhouse exclusives, and they've got blu-ray on their side.
    Even if they don't catch up, the PS3 will be on sale long after 360 switched to their next console.

    In the end, all three have failed us. Nintendo makes games unsuited for hardcore gamers, Sony misses out on lots of key software, and MS has hardware that breaks easily, is way too loud and has tons of extras that cost a lot.

    I'm really looking forward to the P$3 conference. It will be amusing to see how $ony spin the numbers.

    "We are catching up..... really.... We know its too expensive and doesn't have the features of the cheaper competition, but please buy our console because you don't know any better...

    I agree that they do all sound very stupid. I have to say though, that for many of us the Wii doesn't exist. If we were to use that sense to think about who is winning, we would have to say that the PC has won this console war seeing as there are so many being purchased around the world every day. The attach rate between the PC and the Wii probably aren't that far apart either.

    I have owned every Playstation since the PS1, but have just become tired of the stagnant nature of the brand. I never thought I would become a fan of any mirosoft product (life long mac user), but I really have to take my hat off to M$ for the useability of the 360.

    What hoops!? I play Warhawk, log in, choose server, play. Cant think of a way for less hoops. Online like MGS4 is the developeers choice, not a limitation of the netowrk.

    I prefer the symmetry of the ps3 pad, this point is purely subjective.

    I can see who is online and send them a message.

    The useability of the 360? You mean the useability of a third of its consoles that are only good as doorstops? Rushing out hardware that quite simply isnt ready solely to get a stronger foothold in the market is a disgrace in my opinion.

    You are clearly delusional. My PS3 just makes me annoyed. I hate the fact that even with the new update, I still can't tell what people on my friends list are playing. I still end up phoning people to organise a game of COD4.

    Plus the blue tooth microphones are aweful.

    The 360 game pad is better, I don't care what anyone says.

    More lag on PSN

    Sitting around waiting for games to install and then update and then loading the install and the update... I just want to play

    Half the time when I play Warhawk, I am unable to join friends because of networking and server issues.

    I know that I sound like a complete fanboy, but truth be told, I am just tired with the Playstation brand.

    I will come back to the PS3 once they remember that they have the word "play" in their name.

    Seriously, this is so gay. Gayer the Clary. I love my xbox and although I've purchased every ps model to date I refused to to buy the ps3 out of principle. I personally didn't like the way they stripped it down for us Europeans. But be that as it may, all this my willy is bigger than your willy is just so retarded. I would say who the fuck cares about this stuff but clearly lots of people do and I can't see it ever ending. What a pile of wank. Just get on with your job peeps (microsoft AND sony) and stop the poo slinging.

    a. It's not news.

    b. Newer ones are far more reliable.

    c. If yours breaks MS fix it for free.

    Yes it had a design flaw, but it doesn't mean it's badly made. On the whole I think it's a very solid bit of hardware.

    When the PS3 gets closer to the worldwide sales of the 360 MS will end the war with the PS3 by announcing their next console, ho hum. What should really be worrying MS is the fact that the PS3 is outselling the 360 yet its the more expensive machine.

    Take a look at Sony, they exchange it at the door. (No, you don't have to post it yourself nor do you have to wait 2 weeks for a replacement.

    I've been saying exactly this for the last two years or so. 360 does what it does well, unlike PS3 which tries to do everything - but nothing, particularly well. Which is why PS3 owners are so vocal in their derision of the 360 - because deep down they also know this.

    Was getting a PS3. Now Getting an Elite or wait to see the 'new' model! Have plenty of friends with a PS3 and almost everyone of them are selling up to get a real gaming console. The exclusive titles on PS3 have been a major factor in their decision. The fact is that apart from MGS4 they are mostly very average. The other thing is 'Blu-Ray'! It's just not making the sales people expected and the public have sussed out that an up-scaled DVD is not that far off with regard to quality and it's good enough for most consumers.

    Have you all seen the Sony multimedia centres coming out later in the year. They look amazing and they run using Windows...... Yes, Microsoft Windows. They sit under the TV and they show the way media companies are going. Soon enough that is all that will sit as your entertainment centre and I suspect that they will all run on a Microsoft operating system.

    Could everyone just stop talking up the Wii. It's a fucking children's toy and played by grannies and pissed up people at parties. It is no more than a fucking glorified remote control. I remember taking my Wii out of the box and realising it had an infa-red strip to work with the remotes, A fucking infa-red strip, what the fuck is that all about? Real next gen. Most people go to a friends house, play the Wii, think it's cool, buy one, then the novelty wares off and it sits there not getting used.

    Why do people keep referring to 360 as a gamers machine? What games are on the 360 that I cant get at least an equivalent of on the ps3 (and vica versa)?

    The best fps (COD4) is on both.
    The best action (GTA4) is on both.
    The best RPG (Oblivion) is on both.
    The best stealth (MGS$) is on ps3.
    The best racer(Forza?GT5:p) can get a great game on both.

    BillyBrush, Why does it bother you so much?? They are my opinion's and I am well within my rights to express them. If you read those posts carefully, you'd see I had a good thing or two say about their press conference. But of course you're so blinded by your own opinion of me you can't see that. I don't deny I'm critic of the company. I am. But I'm also able spot a well executed idea. The new dashboard is just that. A 2D Home if you will...
