MS rubbishes GoldenEye XBLA talk

"There is no truth to the rumour."

Microsoft Game Studios has told Eurogamer that it has no plans to release GoldenEye on Xbox Live Arcade.

It also rubbished recent reports by Xbox World 360 magazine, which promised to unveil the title in its next edition.

"The story in Xbox World 360 is based entirely on rumour and speculation," MGS told us.

"Unfortunately, we were never contacted by the publication to confirm information or participate in the story in any way, as we would have confirmed that we do not have the necessary rights to release GoldenEye on Xbox Live Arcade."

Microsoft Game Studios does "share the gaming community's enthusiasm" for the title and would "love to release" it on the service.

However, until Microsoft and Nintendo can come to a mutual agreement, it seems there will be no PP7 antics for a while to come.

Shame.

I hate to say I told you so, but "I told you so" :p

PS: I actually love saying "I told you so".

So how do they explain the screenies then?
  • asharkman #3 4 years ago

Cant they just release golden eye on live and on virtual console?
That seems like the best solution to me.
    Everybody wins!
    Yeay me!

Don't Activision have the licence for Bond? Does this not make a difference too?

"So how do they explain the screenies then?"

You can't base the validity of the article on a couple of screenshots. After all I could just start posting screens from the Goldeneye Source mod for HL2 and claim they are taken from Goldeneye on the XBLA.

Nobody wins, you get all your memories ruined by realising how crap the game is compared to things released now. :(

"So how do they explain the screenies then? "

The game is done. They simply can't release it because Ninty changed their mind.

I think the gist of the article will be "here's GoldenEye, don't it look fab, pity you'll never play it"
  • AcidSnake #10 4 years ago

    Link to the screenies?
  • sd99 #11 4 years ago

Xbox World is the worst magazine available - it just publishes this crap in the home of more sales.
  • viper_h #12 4 years ago

Ah well, it'll play like shit on the 360's garbage pad anyway.
  • mattigan #13 4 years ago

That as good as confirmed then
  • Xerx3s #14 4 years ago

Come again? It's one of the best controllers out there and would be best if the dpad wasn't so shit.
  • viper_h #15 4 years ago

I dunno, I seem to get cramp when using the shoulder buttons quite frequently. I also just can not get used to dual analog sticks. I couldn't do it on the PS2 or Gamecube and I can't do it on the 360 either. I miss directional buttons :( Bring back the '64 pad!

I used to love xbox world back in the day............then they gave 'Div3r 3' 9/10

    :-(
  • Markusdragon #17 4 years ago

Xbox World was great back in the day, then Future Publishing bought their publisher, and quality utterly collapsed.
  • HSH25 #18 4 years ago

What exactly is this story about, as far as I'm aware the Xbox World article is about how the game isn't being released on XBLA...this makes it sound like they are saying that it will be released, which isn't what the article is about at all.
  • monkie_king #19 4 years ago

    viper_h: ur doin it wrong!

Anyway, everyone knows the proper way to play GoldenEye was with a N64 pad in each hand for dual analogue satisfaction ;)

They haven't actually "rubbished" anything. What they've said was "We'd love to release this game but we don't have the rights". That's not the same as saying "it doesn't exist" or even "it will never be released". In fact, it sounds a lot like "It's written, and if the licence-holders would get their thumbs out of their arses, it could be out tomorrow".

It will be on the Wii at the end of the year more like for 1200 points

I think metalmonk is about 99% right.

There's no truth to it, but I think it's clear that there SHOULD BE!

What a pisspoor response from MS. The game exists, and the writer of the Xbox World piece has played the bloody thing.

EDIT: And, as Rev Stu says, MS hasn't "rubbished" the article. Sometimes, EG, you really need to think about whether the words you're using in your articles are the right ones!

You can moan about EG if you want, but pretty much the exact same article was posted on another site over the weekend. There was just a bit extra at the end on here.
  • zedzee #27 4 years ago

I really don't see the fuss in bringing this back - an old N64 game with faded/muddy primary colours!

Why not get an emu and run it on a PC instead? Surely that exists, right?
  • Fatnick #28 4 years ago

If it was coming to the Virtual Console I'd wager it would be out by now. If I was Nintendo I would have done everything possible to try and get it out for the Euro/Us launch of the console. My guess for the reason we haven't seen it is that rare can't use it without Nintendo's permission and Nintendo without Rare's.

Mind you, does anyone remember the Felicity from Perfect Dark? Wouldn't it theoretically be possible for Rare to Reskin everything, change the menus and names and release the core goldeneye levels under a different name? It would explain why so much work seems to have been done on both of those Dam screens and silo run-through video which surfaced a while back
  • adamamosa #29 4 years ago

I loved Goldeneye when it was first released. Me and my mates played it every weekend for over a year. However, the FPS genre is the one genre that has changed the most over the last decade. Especially on consoles. They would have had to have made significant improovements in terms of controls and AI for it to be as playable as I remember it. It simply could not compete against the Bioshocks and Half Lifes that we have become used to now. I hope that it doesnt get released so it can remain in my memory as one of my fondest gaming experiences.
  • ph101 #30 4 years ago

Why not just rename it RedEye and change the characters names, and gun names, and level names - job done. Can you own rights on the shape of a level? I reckon not. Lawyers prove me wrong.

"Cant they just release golden eye on live and on virtual console?

    Not really.

on live it'd be a modified version with improved graphics and visuals, etc. On VC it'd be the original game. So it'd end up making more money for msoft than nintendo (who financed it in the first place - and so have every right to be stingey with it)
  • reality_cheque #32 4 years ago

I played the original last year and I think you lot have your rose-tinted specs on. Uglier than Ann Widdecombe, and about as much fun.

    IMO of course.

there is actually a pretty good online scene happengin with GoldenEye N64 these days using a N64 emulator. For watever reason there are lots of uk players. go figure..
