MS launches 360 storage upgrade site

Refurbished 20GB HDD for 13 quid.

Microsoft is offering Xbox 360 owners who don't have a hard disk a free storage device to get them ready for the New Xbox Experience.

The Xbox Storage Upgrade website asks for your console serial and ID numbers, and then offers you a refurbished 20GB hard disk, a free 512MB memory unit, or a combination of hard disk and Xbox Live time. It all depends on which console you have.

Owners of the Xbox 360 Core System fall into three categories. Active Live members with no storage, or a 64MB memory unit, are offered a free 512MB memory unit or a 20GB HDD for GBP 12.99. Active Live members with a 256 or 512MB memory unit are offered just the HDD, again for GBP 12.99. If your console hasn't connected to Xbox Live within the last 12 months, and doesn't have a hard disk, however, you're offered a 20GB HDD and three months on Xbox Live for GBP 19.99.

Owners of the more recent Xbox 360 Arcade console fall into two categories. Xbox Live subscribers without an HDD get the 20GB HDD offer for GBP 12.99, while those without a hard disk who haven't been online for 12 months get the offer of hard disk and three months' access to Xbox Live for GBP 19.99.

The Premium or Elite Xbox 360 consoles are not supported.

New Xbox Experience is due to launch around the world on 19th November as a free download. Check out what it does on our New Xbox Experience page.

This article doesn't make any sense... it says it "offers you a refurbished 20GB hard disk for USD 19.99 or a 512MB memory unit for nothing" unless you have an Arcade, in which case you get the other deal, but apparently Premiums and Elites aren't supported, so what is this mystical 4th SKU that gets the first deal?

    Still, it's a good idea!
  • Troopa3k #2 3 years ago

I'm assuming it's the old Core models that get the first deal?

Edit: Before the Core's got rebranded as Arcades (if I'm thinking right.....)
    Edited by 1 at 14/10/08 @ 09:50
  • Baronen #3 3 years ago

That would be the core unit, I presume. The original Arcade, if you will.

    Edit: Ya

Yeah, it's the Core. Sorry that's not clear.
  • asphaltcowboy #5 3 years ago

  • Darren #6 3 years ago

Sounds like a fantastic deal to me... a 20 GB HDD for less than £15. Arcade 360 owners would be foolish to pass on that one and even if the 512 MB memory unit is being offered free it has a lot less usable space. "Microsoft in Good Deal" shocker... who'd have thought, eh? :o
  • JonFE #7 3 years ago

Perhaps it's their way to make amends for the HDD-less Core/Arcade SKU :)
  • rclifford #8 3 years ago

I happen to have a 'core system' and the offer was available for UK owners. It was £12.99 for the 20gb hard drive, and that includes postage and packing, so an excellent deal I thought. The confirmation email politely said, "We are processing your order now and can’t wait to see you online."
  • Mugwum Verified Operations Director, Eurogamer Network #9 3 years ago

    rclifford: Thanks chum.
  • groovychainsaw #10 3 years ago

Why not just bite the bullet and make all new xboxes come with 20GB hard drives now and make them compulsory for new games...? if its for the sake of 12.99...
  • asphaltcowboy #11 3 years ago

Would be nice if they were offering UK customers the card - I gave my 20GB HDD to my brother for his Core - would be nice to get a memory card in return!
  • brockenheimer #12 3 years ago

So any news on cheap 20GB HDDs for UK Arcade owners (as opposed to Core)?
  • Mugwum Verified Operations Director, Eurogamer Network #13 3 years ago

I've finally heard back from Microsoft about this, and they've clarified the offer. I've updated the story, but to save you a click, here's how it works:

    * Core console
    - Active Live members with no storage or with a 64mb MU: Offered 512mb for free or 20GB HDD for £12.99
    - Active Live members with 256 or 512 MU but no HDD: Offered 20GB HDD for £12.99
    - Console has not connected to XBL 12 month and doesn't possess MU: Offered 20gb HDD and 3 month Xbox Live £19.99

    * Arcade console
    - Active Live subscribers without a HDD: Offered 20gb HDD for £12.99
    - Non active Live subscriber without a HDD and not connected to XBL within 12 months: 20gb HDD + 3 month Xbox Live for £19.99
  • Darren #14 3 years ago

@groovychainsaw - I suspect that the reason Microsoft have moved from 20 GB to 60 GB HDDs on the Xbox 360 is because 20 GB HDDs are hard to buy in bulk these days but 60 GB HDDs aren't.

Microsoft are obviously getting rid of their old supply of refurbuished HDDs while at the same time encouraging Arcade/Core owners to buy an HDD, which is more ideally suited for the new Dashboard which launches mid-November. IMO they should have done this 18 months ago by offering the 20 GB HDD for next to nothing considering that's how much they cost even then. Instead though they kept the HDD at a stupidly high price thus putting people off buying one in the first place.
  • banjo21 #15 3 years ago

Stunning value. Thats a world beating machine for £129 + £12.99. Amazing and well done MS. Just get this well advertised and if you can do them for £12.99 then fgs ship them in the Arcade box and be done with it.
  • gabsta69 #16 3 years ago

is there any way of finding out your console id and serial ID without turning on your console? I ask my core console is dead but would like the free memory card as a consolation for the RROD
  • mashk #17 3 years ago

By that token, Microsoft ought to offer all those mugs who bought premiums with piffling 20gb hard-drives, 60GB hard-drives for 12.99.

    It's only fair.
  • peteb #18 3 years ago

    @gabsta69

Serial number should be on the back on the console
  • BartonFink #19 3 years ago

  • YobRenoops #20 3 years ago

Surely this just justifies whats been said many times. Microsoft should've given everyone a hard drive.
  • septimus #21 3 years ago

Guess that is what you have to do when you forget to put a hard disk with one of your SKUs.

Maybe now devs will be allowed to program for HDD only 360's? Doubt it.
  • mazzl #22 3 years ago

this is just weird... dump the mu and just give everybody a hd... stop selling the arcade...
what about if you buy a new arcade right now..
  • prolific8 #23 3 years ago

So wait, I paid another £100ish for the same hard drive on my Premium console, and I get bugger all?

Bravo Microsoft, that's how you reward customers.
  • UltimateWarrior #24 3 years ago

Shame that the Live Arcade games can't be copied across to your new hard drive and used offline. They oly work offline on the original storage device you download them to. That's so crap. You should at least have the option to chnage your primary storage device details in your profile or something. It means people whose 360s die can never play any of their purchased live stuff offline any more when they get a replacement 360. You're basically paying for stuff on Live but in reality you're simply renting the games.
  • mattdoc30 #25 3 years ago

I don't normally worry about paying more for something that eventaully ends up less, that's the price you pay for being an early adopter of Technology - but in this instance it would have been nice if us premium owners had been given a 60GB / 120GB HDD offer! Not free necessarily, but certainly a reduction in price.
  • linksdad #26 3 years ago

I've got an almost full 13gb disk and have stopped buying from Arcade, care to subsidise (or not blatently rip me off on) a 120gb drive Bill?
  • IneptPercy #27 3 years ago

Well done hedbog, first troll award goes to you.

I do still believe the 360 offers the best value as a games machine and this offer is good, I do agree that it was a silly mistake to make hard drives optional but not a problem to many who just discounted the core as not being worth it. To say the last xbox had one as standard it does seem very odd, but they still aren't need by eveybody.

Eitherway I good deal if you want it.
  • PrivateJoker #28 3 years ago

lol. You guys are so being fucked over when it comes to hdd's. For 50 sterling you could have a 250 gb drive for a PS3. Now that's more like it and don t start spouting crap like xbox is cheaper cus it aint when you add on all the accessories that come as standard on the PS3, fact. Not stirring, just making a valid point.
  • rotmm #29 3 years ago

Damn, a glass half empty hedbog? Shocking.

But I agree. I don't get what MS are doing here. I'd much rather support the behemoths of Sony and Nintendo, especially because of te way they treat their European customers.

I don't want to support a company that launches in Europe at the same time as the US

I don't want to support a company that offers the same hardware specs to European consumers as US ones.

I want to support companies such as Sony and Nintendo, who still today charge us more for our hardware than our US cousins.

That's how it should and must work in the future. We must pay more, because we are more valuable customers.
  • OldK1ngCole #30 3 years ago

    +1

Would really like to upgrade my hard-drive as it spends most of it's time full, 20gb just isn't big enough. Once hard-drive installs kick in I'm really gonna struggle for space. Come on Micro$oft, give us existing Premium owners something, like a trade-up (20gb + £40 for 120gb) or similar.

  • rotmm #32 3 years ago

    Hedbog,

And your point is? MS pouring money in Xbox, offering competitive prices across all territories, ensuring that the best games are available on the platform and even going so far as to offer "free" upgrades to those with older systems....

....and that is somehow a bad thing?

So I guess that the way Sony continue to take advantage of the loyalty of the UK gamers is somehow a good thing?
  • Xerx3s #33 3 years ago

"People hate Sony for being 'liars', but at leas they dont just simply buy their way into the market with shitty built products. "

Enjoying wipeout? One of the many things you gained from sony buying their way into the market. You might be a completely blinkered fanboy with insecurity problems but at least get your facts straight.

"......What you get with the PS3 and Wii make them truly feel like next-gen systems......"

Oh I don't know, mandatory installs have been a staple of PC gaming forever and I had a "waggle" joystick on my Spectrum back in the day.

It all depends on how you define "next-gen" of course. Is it a completely seamless and integrated online solution tied to the most powerful modern day console? Or is it old-style gaming with a "new-style" controller, with a variety of other controllers on hand for those games that just don't suit waggle, or is it a fairly decent games machine with a HD movie player built in for added value?

    I don't know.
  • DeltaBravoNiner #36 3 years ago

Core Console... "Active Live members with 256 or 512 MU but no HDD: Offered 20GB HDD for £12.99 "

What if you're a mug who has a core, Active Live membership and bought a 20GB (it's a joke as it is 13GB HDD) for £60... you get any free/ cheapos then...

No... ah well, missed the boat again eh!?!

  • PrivateJoker #37 3 years ago

  • drewman5150 #39 3 years ago

    @DeltaBravoNiner
Then you're in the same boat as those of us that bought a premium or an elite...has the point been missed somehow?
It's meant to be a solution to those who don't have the memory card capacity or a hard drive to install the NXE, not some random hard drive giveaway from Microsoft...
Thinking about it though, there's no reason why you can't get one - your serial would show up as a Core so you could get another 20Gb for 13 quid
  • SpaceMidget75 Verified Senior Software Developer, Minerva Computer Services #40 3 years ago

Some people are just never fucking happy eh.

Lots of people are quite happy playing 360 games without a HDD. You also don't NEED a 20GB HDD for the NXE; a 512 MU will suffice which MS is giving away for free.

So, the Arcade is not a gimmick but a useful SKU to lots of people who don't want to download movies, demos or have backwards compatibly and just want to play Fifa, GTA and PGR etc etc.

    AND

MS shouldn't have made the HDD mandatory in the first place due to NXE because the NXE doesn't bloody need it.

They should have never released a 64mb MU however.

  • PrivateJoker #41 3 years ago

farticusmaximus...."Well, while you get that 'next-gen feeling', what 360 owners get is next-gen games. Let me know when the PS3 gets one, I'd like to come laugh at it's lateness to the show. Oh dear you are such a prick. LBP will be around and remembered far longer than any xbox game. Wipeout Hd?? £12.00 for a classic they could have easily charged double for. Heavy Rain? Mirrors Edge developed on PS3? and i'm looking forward to not swapping 10 discs for FFXIII and as for installs you'll welcome them soon and you'll agree it don't have beat waiting ages for menu screens and such to load and i think you can't ignore that xbox is getting more and more ports these days cus' they look better for it instead of vice versa, i.e PS3's shitty Orange Box. @drewman5150 "your serial would show up as a Core"

Thats my point, my serial would show up as a core, but they suggest that they know you have a HDD already... as mugwum posted that ms email informed him, under core system... "Active Live members with 256 or 512 MU but no HDD: "

Not missing the point, I read the article and know why they're doing this, just wondered if / how they know whether or not I already have an HDD. I'm gonna try when I gets home to my xbox and serial number anyhoo.

Oooh, interesting. I bought a core system and added an HDD I got free from a friend (thanks to MS botching his console repair and sending him a whole new console even though they had told to remove the HDD before he sent it back to them).

So if I give them my serial, I'll get another HDD. Is that the tinkle of the eBay bell I hear calling.

The only flaw in my awesome plan is that I expect the arse to fall out of the ebay 360 HDD market as a result.

  • kangarootoo #69 3 years ago

You seem to be very angry right from the off, which suggests huge insecurities to everybody else.

I own a PS3 as well, and I agree that upscaled DVDs look very nice, but you are still acting like a stroppy child. You might be surprised to learn (though its clear to everyone else) that watching upscaled DVDs is no antidote to acting like a dickhead.

As for intelligent debate, it seemed to be rolling along quite nicely until you showed up. Leaving would honestly be the best thing for you, because there are two groups forming here. You somehow still believing that you are smarter and funnier than everyone else, and everyone else. You failed at the first hurdle by hurling insults. We all know full well that as soon as someone resorts to name calling it is because they have nothing left in their head they feel they can use to make their point.

So you lost, and you did it to yourself. I'm sure you can see the funny side.

If you want to mock tiny grammar mistakes instead of doing proper debate, something you seem to be incapable to do, that says more about you than me really. Not that your posts haven't spoken volumes about you already.

Just read back and a) no, all debate was going on nicely until you and hedbog showed up. b) It was you who threw the first insult around to just about every who bought a 360. c) it was you who posted a steaming pile of shit that had insecurity oozing from every crack.

Even if all above where remotely untrue, your name calling and debating skill suggest a personality as developed as a 4yo. It is quite obvious that the source of your anger is that other people don't share your pov. The irony is that you are unable to make solid arguments in the spirit of debate and thereby make yourself easy prey. So even if you had something sensible to say, your posts are so counter productive that it would be ignored.
  • Xerx3s #79 3 years ago

"Thought i'd hit ignore. oh well if at first... "

Ah. How childish. Doesn't matter, you're only underlining that we where right. Have a nice life.
  • kangarootoo #80 3 years ago

    @PrivateJoker

Your very post started with this.

"lol. You guys are so being fucked over when it comes to hdd's"

So what the hell are you on about?

My philosophy is this. I am reasonable (if a little pious at times) and am happy to discuss subjects with anybody. I am happy to have my opinion questiioned, 'cos that is what debate is all about. I try to avoid hurling insults at anybody for the reasons already given.

But when someone turns up and starts giving absue to anybody who will listen, I figure a different tact is required. That is why I attacked you. Its not personal, and if you can discuss the subject at hand in an adult manner I'll be happy to do so.

It really seemed like you felt you had nothing to add to this thread than bile and abuse, so why bother posting at all? The reason I referred to insecurity is that your behaviour is typical of someone who is insecure about their choice of games console. A good news item about the 360 appears, and all you can contribute is an attempt to drag it down and make every 360 owner feel bad about their own games console choice. If that isn't insecurity, its insanity. Pick one.... or just play nicely and you will probably be treated with respect.

Why even entertain the retard's bullshit?
  • chronom4n #82 3 years ago

this is a good deal for the arcade owners. i mean buy a 360 from sainsy's and then get a refurbished hdd and you have a decent set-up for under £115 odd.

"Why even entertain the retard's bullshit? "

IRL, if someone acts stupid, it won't be long before he is 'corrected' by society. The reason that so many people are behaving like cunts on the net is because there is nobody to correct them. Ignoring cunts will only make them feel more and more secure in ruining the internet for others.

Maybe, just maybe, one of them will get it into their thick skulls that things like calling names is just not done.

    I have a dream... ;)

I wish I wouldn't have a 20 gig Premium... cause I do want to use those pre installs. Thinking about doing the upgrade myself, but fear getting banned on live or so.
  • cyber_nicco #85 3 years ago

    @mattdoc30

I don't normally worry about paying more for something that eventaully ends up less, that's the price you pay for being an early adopter of Technology - but in this instance it would have been nice if us premium owners had been given a 60GB / 120GB HDD offer! Not free necessarily, but certainly a reduction in price. "

I understand your feeling, but I bought an elite for $450.00, what do I get if you get the HD upgrade cheap? I'm just saying, that logic can be carried forward as far as you like...
  • cyber_nicco #86 3 years ago

Oh, and this is good news for anyone without a hard drive...
  • cyber_nicco #87 3 years ago

Great, now I have to take PrivateJoker OFF my ignore list just so I can read this thread properly...

I am simply amazed and slightly concerned about all of the trolls and fanboys on both sides of the fence here.

you should all grow up ffs.
  • Xerx3s #89 3 years ago

This debate was going perfectly well until mr and ms sdf over there started to post how free things where a bad thing. If you have problems with this debate (or what's left of it), look over there.

"Face it, you are secretly jealous of all the quality games the PS3 is getting and you wish you coul dhave them on yoru XBOX too... "

It's called an Xbox and it does have most of the important PS3's games.

This thread underlines why JMM will never make a solid argument about the kind of people posting.

    Hedbog...belziah...lol :)

Xerx3s...You're just as bad as everyone else, so get off your high horse and wallow in it.
Or....I'll have a straightforward debate if you want with no fanboyism of childish catcalling and you can choose whatever argument you like and i'll respond to it appropritely and politely. Up to you.

"Anyone defending the 'tard box is an idiot."

Shit changes mate - see if you can change yours and get a fucking life.

Tremendous value proposition by MS this with the new arcade pack at £130 - I really can see them shifting an awful lot of these not-so-tard packs between now and Xmas ...
  • bonker #95 3 years ago

"So wait, I paid another £100ish for the same hard drive on my Premium console, and I get bugger all? "

    When did you do that?
  • bonker #96 3 years ago

"The only flaw in my awesome plan is that I expect the arse to fall out of the ebay 360 HDD market as a result."

Do it quick - your average Ebay punter is like 80IQ ...

"PrivateJoker seems like a bizarrely apt username, given that nobody else is laughing. "

    I assume he's a Kubrick fan :)
  • bonker #98 3 years ago

"So, this is MS admitting that the Arcade/core SKU really WAS a waste of time after all!! "

That's 100% right - it couldn't possibly be that they have excess stock of 20GB drives, now that the market has moved onto 60GB+ drives, that they can use to help seriously out-value Sony and N this Xmas ...

"*relaxes while watching upscaled DVD* "

I take it your "girlfriend" was on said DVD?
  • IneptPercy #100 3 years ago

I love the upscaled DVD argument, there is some truth to this...

I will had I play both HD-DVD and Blu-ray on my PC without a games console.

    OK I have a 40" Samsung M87 1080p for testing.

Firstly there is no real difference between HD-DVD and Blu-ray quality wise so I will just use HD vs SD.

I have had access to a few films in both SD and HD and on my TV the difference is noticably and therefore I would conclude that HD is better than upscaled SD. BUT....

I then took it by brothers house as we wanted to see if it was worth it for him, his TV is 32" and the quite usual 1366x768.
This time it was upscaled SD vs downscaled HD. Now the difference was far from clear and to be honest the difference was hard to tell, when I got very close and really looking for difference then I would say HD is better, but for 'normal' viewing the difference was next to none.

    SO...
    With a 1080p screen blu-ray/HD-DVD wins
With a 'HD Ready' screen DVD wins, mainly due to price to gain ratio.

As for the PS3 is better value thing, yes it is if you intend to use everything, if you just want to play games then maybe not. at £130 you can get a 360 which is ready to play games, you don't NEED any of the extras to play games, blu-ray - great if you have a good enough TV, wireless - great if you can't wire it (prefer to wire anyway), bigger hard drive - great for storing media if you want (or storing forced installs), Free online - not everybody wants to go online, if you do there is arguements for and against, 1, pay and get a great system, 2, its free but not as good, each to there own.

    Bonker...

Yes you are correct, Kubrick was the man.

"I say: Anyone who claims Upscaled DVD is as good as Blu_Ray is clearly a XBOT deluding themselves to try to hide from the fact that Blu_Ray is a clear advantage to PS3.... "

Can't argue with that - the PS3's BR player definitely gives it the edge over the 360 when it comes to playing BRs ...
  • rotmm #103 3 years ago

@hedbog: "I say: Anyone who claims Upscaled DVD is as good as Blu_Ray is clearly a XBOT deluding themselves to try to hide from the fact that Blu_Ray is a clear advantage to PS3.... "

True. While at first glance, and normal sitting distance from the screen, the differences may not be all that apparent, over time one begins to appreciate the higher quality on offer by BluRay.

It's like playing a game like GTA4 or Bioshock on the 360 and then on the PS3. At first, they may seem the same, but going back to gaming on the 360 you just appreciate the crisper, cleaner visuals all the more.
  • rotmm #104 3 years ago

    @Hedbog,

    If only that were true.
  • IneptPercy #105 3 years ago

    IneptPercy:

    Nice argument, but purely anecdotal.

I do have eyes so maybe not completely untrue, as it is also using a PC I could be witnessing different upscaling/downscaling methods than what the consoles may use, I will also add that I had the PC set to 1360x768 for the TV

So it may not solve the argument as really the ideal comparison would be a PS3 downscaling a blu-ray to 720p while a 360 upscales a DVD to 720p. Either way I don't think there is a big enough difference when not using a 1080p screen.

As for which is the better console, it can go all day, I personally think the 360 is the best value games console, but if you like some of the extras the PS3 has to offer then it can level it out a lot.

Exclusive games wise I can see there is many on both consoles, right now for me the 360's lineup works best but I am open to how the PS3 lineup may be better suited to some.

We all love games so why not all get along? you can't fight everybody who has a different opinion to you in life can you.

Right now I own a N64, Dreamcast, PS2, Xbox, Gamecube, DS, 360, Wii and PC. I have bought each one for different reasons (games, power, price etc) if somebody wishes to think that is a foolish setup then so be it, I am happy with what I have and as long as everybody else is happy with what they have then who cares.

Play games... be happy... stop arguing...

    Peace

"Xerx3s...You're just as bad as everyone else, so get off your high horse and wallow in it. "

I thought you put me on ignore? Either say that you put someone on ignore and do it or don't post such silly things. As for my high horse: I left it in the stable mate. With people like you I really don't need to climb on it to rise above you.

"Or....I'll have a straightforward debate if you want with no fanboyism of childish catcalling and you can choose whatever argument you like and i'll respond to it appropritely and politely. Up to you."

Wait, you storm into a thread, insult everybody there, go off like a rampaging lunatic and then at the end when you see that it's counter productive, you expect us to have a nice civil debate (in a thread that holds little material for debate in the first place)?

Sorry but there are nicer people to chat with on this forum. I do wish you a pleasant day though.

So about those spelling errors in your posts...
