MS launches 360 storage upgrade site News

Xbox 360 News by Tom Bramwell

14 October, 2008

Microsoft is offering Xbox 360 owners who don't have a hard disk a free storage device to get them ready for the New Xbox Experience.

The Xbox Storage Upgrade website asks for your console serial and ID numbers, and then offers you a refurbished 20GB hard disk, a free 512MB memory unit, or a combination of hard disk and Xbox Live time. It all depends on which console you have.

Owners of the Xbox 360 Core System fall into three categories. Active Live members with no storage, or a 64MB memory unit, are offered a free 512MB memory unit or a 20GB HDD for GBP 12.99. Active Live members with a 256 or 512MB memory unit are offered just the HDD, again for GBP 12.99. If your console hasn't connected to Xbox Live within the last 12 months, and doesn't have a hard disk, however, you're offered a 20GB HDD and three months on Xbox Live for GBP 19.99.

Owners of the more recent Xbox 360 Arcade console fall into two categories. Xbox Live subscribers without an HDD get the 20GB HDD offer for GBP 12.99, while those without a hard disk who haven't been online for 12 months get the offer of hard disk and three months' access to Xbox Live for GBP 19.99.

The Premium or Elite Xbox 360 consoles are not supported.

New Xbox Experience is due to launch around the world on 19th November as a free download. Check out what it does on our New Xbox Experience page.

This article doesn't make any sense... it says it "offers you a refurbished 20GB hard disk for USD 19.99 or a 512MB memory unit for nothing" unless you have an Arcade, in which case you get the other deal, but apparently Premiums and Elites aren't supported, so what is this mystical 4th SKU that gets the first deal?

Still, it's a good idea!

I'm assuming it's the old Core models that get the first deal?

Edit: Before the Core's got rebranded as Arcades (if I'm thinking right.....)

Sounds like a fantastic deal to me... a 20 GB HDD for less than £15. Arcade 360 owners would be foolish to pass on that one and even if the 512 MB memory unit is being offered free it has a lot less usable space. "Microsoft in Good Deal" shocker... who'd have thought, eh? :O

I happen to have a 'core system' and the offer was available for UK owners. It was £12.99 for the 20gb hard drive, and that includes postage and packing, so an excellent deal I thought. The confirmation email politely said, "We are processing your order now and can’t wait to see you online."

Seems OK if arcade users get a free card.
Means you can have one with the dash on and the one you got with the system for saves I suppose.

I've got an Arcade in the house so it'll be interesting to see what's happening here.

Why not just bite the bullet and make all new xboxes come with 20GB hard drives now and make them compulsory for new games...? if its for the sake of 12.99...

I've finally heard back from Microsoft about this, and they've clarified the offer. I've updated the story, but to save you a click, here's how it works:

* Core console
- Active Live members with no storage or with a 64mb MU: Offered 512mb for free or 20GB HDD for £12.99
- Active Live members with 256 or 512 MU but no HDD: Offered 20GB HDD for £12.99
- Console has not connected to XBL 12 month and doesn't possess MU: Offered 20gb HDD and 3 month Xbox Live £19.99

* Arcade console
- Active Live subscribers without a HDD: Offered 20gb HDD for £12.99
- Non active Live subscriber without a HDD and not connected to XBL within 12 months: 20gb HDD + 3 month Xbox Live for £19.99

@groovychainsaw - I suspect that the reason Microsoft have moved from 20 GB to 60 GB HDDs on the Xbox 360 is because 20 GB HDDs are hard to buy in bulk these days but 60 GB HDDs aren't.

Microsoft are obviously getting rid of their old supply of refurbuished HDDs while at the same time encouraging Arcade/Core owners to buy an HDD, which is more ideally suited for the new Dashboard which launches mid-November. IMO they should have done this 18 months ago by offering the 20 GB HDD for next to nothing considering that's how much they cost even then. Instead though they kept the HDD at a stupidly high price thus putting people off buying one in the first place.

Shame that the Live Arcade games can't be copied across to your new hard drive and used offline. They oly work offline on the original storage device you download them to. That's so crap. You should at least have the option to chnage your primary storage device details in your profile or something. It means people whose 360s die can never play any of their purchased live stuff offline any more when they get a replacement 360. You're basically paying for stuff on Live but in reality you're simply renting the games.

I don't normally worry about paying more for something that eventaully ends up less, that's the price you pay for being an early adopter of Technology - but in this instance it would have been nice if us premium owners had been given a 60GB / 120GB HDD offer! Not free necessarily, but certainly a reduction in price.

Well done hedbog, first troll award goes to you.

I do still believe the 360 offers the best value as a games machine and this offer is good, I do agree that it was a silly mistake to make hard drives optional but not a problem to many who just discounted the core as not being worth it. To say the last xbox had one as standard it does seem very odd, but they still aren't need by eveybody.

Eitherway I good deal if you want it.

Damn, a glass half empty hedbog? Shocking.

But I agree. I don't get what MS are doing here. I'd much rather support the behemoths of Sony and Nintendo, especially because of te way they treat their European customers.

I don't want to support a company that launches in Europe at the same time as the US

I don't want to support a company that offers the same hardware specs to European consumers as US ones.

I want to support companies such as Sony and Nintendo, who still today charge us more for our hardware than our US cousins.

That's how it should and must work in the future. We must pay more, because we are more valuable customers.

+1

Would really like to upgrade my hard-drive as it spends most of it's time full, 20gb just isn't big enough. Once hard-drive installs kick in I'm really gonna struggle for space. Come on Micro$oft, give us existing Premium owners something, like a trade-up (20gb + £40 for 120gb) or similar.

Hedbog,

And your point is? MS pouring money in Xbox, offering competitive prices across all territories, ensuring that the best games are available on the platform and even going so far as to offer "free" upgrades to those with older systems....

....and that is somehow a bad thing?

So I guess that the way Sony continue to take advantage of the loyalty of the UK gamers is somehow a good thing?

Oh I don't know, mandatory installs have been a staple of PC gaming forever and I had a "waggle" joystick on my Spectrum back in the day.

It all depends on how you define "next-gen" of course. Is it a completely seamless and integrated online solution tied to the most powerful modern day console? Or is it old-style gaming with a "new-style" controller, with a variety of other controllers on hand for those games that just don't suit waggle, or is it a fairly decent games machine with a HD movie player built in for added value?

I don't know.

I will of course observe the rules and allow it a good quarter of an hour to install, but I can't promise not to piss my pants laughing at it's horrific tearing and jaggies.

It's meant to be a solution to those who don't have the memory card capacity or a hard drive to install the NXE, not some random hard drive giveaway from Microsoft...
Thinking about it though, there's no reason why you can't get one - your serial would show up as a Core so you could get another 20Gb for 13 quid

Some people are just never fucking happy eh.

Lots of people are quite happy playing 360 games without a HDD. You also don't NEED a 20GB HDD for the NXE; a 512 MU will suffice which MS is giving away for free.

So, the Arcade is not a gimmick but a useful SKU to lots of people who don't want to download movies, demos or have backwards compatibly and just want to play Fifa, GTA and PGR etc etc.

AND

MS shouldn't have made the HDD mandatory in the first place due to NXE because the NXE doesn't bloody need it.

They should have never released a 64mb MU however.

Mirrors Edge developed on PS3? and i'm looking forward to not swapping 10 discs for FFXIII and as for installs you'll welcome them soon and you'll agree it don't have beat waiting ages for menu screens and such to load and i think you can't ignore that xbox is getting more and more ports these days cus' they look better for it instead of vice versa, i.e PS3's shitty Orange Box.
