MS claims 40 percent GTA IV attach rate

Toots Xbox 360 horn.

Microsoft has said that 40 percent of its new Xbox 360 consoles were sold with Grand Theft Auto IV during the game's first week on sale.

The news comes just days after Microsoft claimed "more than 60 percent" of software sales for GTA IV in the US were on Xbox 360; a spike that pushed hardware sales up by 54 percent.

"The game is attaching well to new consoles, roughly 40 per cent of 360s going out the door had a copy of GTA IV going with them," said a spokesperson on the Major "Larry Hryb" Nelson podcast.

Official Chart Track numbers in the UK show that 514,000 copies of GTA IV were sold on Xbox 360 in the game's first week on sale, while 413,000 were flogged on PS3.

According to Chart Track figures released yesterday, the percentage gap widened in week two - with 360 sales accounting for 62 percent of the total sold - but overall sales for the game slumped by 77 percent.

So, usual then - it sold out on 360, not on PS3?

Celebrating every tiny win is getting old when Nintendo could put out Mario Potty Trainer and sell a million...

I wonder if that's because people read EG's 360 vs. PS3 game comparison article? ;) LOL

I guess the Xbox brand is now the official home of GTA. And Microsoft are the kings of the console once again. It's like some kind of bizzaro world, I'm half expecting Islam to adopt christian values and the American government to start embracing and celebrating gays.

So, just over 500,000 copies of GTA4 were sold, and 40% of 360s sold had a copy with them - therefore 200,000 copies were in a bundle and 300,000 were sold on their own?

That either looks good or bad depending on what side of the fence you are on. 200,000 new consoles is a great jump in user base and earning potential, but 300,000 sold to the current user base doesn't sound so impressive.

Well if true, it definately is worth celebrating I would say. In fact having a quick look around some of the online retailers (amazon, play.com, game, shopto) the Xbox 360 version of GTA4 is on top of the charts with both versions (Xbox360/PS3) in stock. the charts also show the 360 console outselling the PS3.

I don't think that's quite right - they are saying 40% of the 360's sold also had a copy of GTA4 with them, not that 40% of GTA4 sales were with a 360. So if they only sold 100,000 consoles, then thats 40,000 copies of GTA4 sold with a console, and 460,000 sold on their own.

    I think.... :S

Is this actually something to be proud of? 40% of all new purchases were bought for 1 game.

The 54% jump in sales of the console is much more significant, surely? Why not focus on that?

    Carlo

And what do you think was the catalyst for the 54% jump?
  • systems #12 4 years ago

@dk_rare. Microsoft was always the official home of the GTA series. It was ported from PC to PS.

Oh I think I misunderstood what was said. so 40% of the consoles sold had a Copy of GTA4 not that 40% of All GTA4 360 copies sold were with a 360 which is something NOT WORTH CELEBRATING BY MS like I posted above AT ALL!

I first thought that of the almost 700K Xbox 360 copies of GTA4 sold 40% of them were with the 360 which puts the 360 console sales at 280k which is obviously a RIDICULOUS number for the UK .... Sorry my bad!

Not sure if this is restricted to Norn Iron only, but I couldn't find a copy of GTA 4 in either Belfast city centre or Derry since launch day.

The feckers would say things like 'yeah we got 7 in this morining, but they're all gone mate, sorry'. Grr.

So after trying this for 2 weeks to save having to wait for mail order to arrive (hindsight is 20:20) I caved and ordered at Amazon.

(360 by the way, PS3 copies of the game floating around everywhere).

Sony will surely be smarting that it's combined week 1 and week 2 sales total doesn't even match the 360 week 1 sales.

I don't doubt that the PS3 loyalist tendencies would probably have given a higher attach rate than the 360's if the PS3 cost the same as the 360 - but it doesn't, hence the difference.

It would have been a depressing day if the price difference had not have had an impact - as this may have had long term implications for the entire industry.

Its not celebrating the attach rate of the one game, it sold more than the PS3 version it doesn't matter how or why, it will lead to more people associting it with the 360.

The other thing with the 360 is that there is a lot of other games to play, I know a few people who haven't bought GTA as they are waiting until they have finished there current game/games.

Meanwhile if you own a PS3 it really is the best game on there without a doubt so they are all buying it.

Eitherway I am happy playing it and I am sure many other people now are regardless for console which is a great thing.
